Looking for a creative graduation gift?! Check out this clever idea that was sent to me by reader, Jodi…

[h2s_box]Hi Collin! My oldest is “graduating” from Kindergarten this year and as a surprise gift, I purchased the book: Oh The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. I am going to ask each of his teachers for the next 12 years to sign it and write him a little note. Then on his real graduation for his Senior Year, I will present the book as a gift to my son. Currently, you can purchase the book for $9.99 on I thought this would be a pretty inexpensive and memorable graduation gift. [/h2s_box]

Do you have any clever (and affordable!) graduation gift ideas?

My daughter graduated from PreK, and the school gave this book as a gift, where the teachers signed, and a note , explained to do this for the next 12 years. Beautiful.

  2. JJ

That is ridiculously creative!! One of my sisters got me the book as one of my college grad presents, but that idea is really bittersweet!

  3. Ashley57

Wow, I love this idea. I am storing it for future use. I did get this book as a graduation gift, but not with any signatures in it!

This is the same cover – Oh the Places You’ll Go – Dr Seuss!! Great notebook!!

Anyone have a creative ideas for a senior graduating high school this summer, something PLEASSEEE HELP !!

    • Angela

If they are going to college I like to get them a gift card to the college bookstore. A lot of colleges are owned by Barnes and Noble now so that’s easy to buy. If they are independent you can often buy gift cards on their website and have them shipped for free.

Buy an umbrella from the dollar store. Attach money (1’s, 5’s, whatever) to long pieces of ribbon. Then open the umbrella and attach the ribbons to the ribs of the umbrella. Close it up and wrap it nicely. Explain when they unwrap it that you bought it at the dollar store and want to make sure it works so they open it now. The ribbons “rain” down on them with the money attached. Every graduating senior needs money and every little bit helps.

I love that Pam! Thanks for sharing

this would make a nice bridal shower gift too

When my kids graduated from HS I got a large mat for one of their senior pictures and let people sign it when they came by for the graduation party. Just be sure to use some painter’s tape to mark off where the frame will be so the writing doesn’t get covered up. If it is a gift for someone else, give them a laundry bag, maybe personalized with their University or monogrammed with their name. Include a roll of quarters!

Gift cards to Amazon and if they are moving to a dorm a care package of toiletries, laundry detergent, soft towels, anything like that is appreciated.

    • Jennifer

When I went to college all of my aunts on my dad’s side (there are 6 of them) got together and put together a laundry basket full of useful items. There was laundry detergent, a set of extra long twin sheets (the beds at my school have extra long beds which were great!), a quilt that one of my aunts had made for me, a shower caddy, etc. Maybe not very creative, but very useful and thoughtful and very appreciated:)

BTW – Thank you for this idea. My son’s last day of Kindergarten is tomorrow and so I am headed to Target to pick up a copy so I can start this great tradition!

  6. Aly

    That’s a brilliant idea!!

  7. Megan D

I’ve been doing this for my kids and their teachers each melt when I ask them to write their note in the book.

  8. Queenmum

I like to give gift cards to high school grads. Not all college kids have access to a car and getting basics can be difficult. My niece said it was so nice to have Tide delivered to her dorm. Amazon gift cards are great too.

  9. Jackie

I have 3 kids and my oldest is in 3rd Grade. I have done this every year for them. My youngest one will start pre-school next year and that’s when we start taking the book to their teachers. Great memories!

  10. Rachel

Saw that idea on Pinterest I’m trying to find one at kohls they are 2.50 on clearance kohls cares

My english teacher gave this book to me when I graduated high school. I still have it to this day. I thought it was such a unique gift!

  12. Amie

I saw this idea on pintrest and was planning on doing it. I have a lot of time to think about it (my daughter is just finishing preschool) but was just wondering what people were going to do when their children were in highschool and they don’t have one main teacher. Do you ask every teacher for every class to sign in?

    • Susan

Probably just special teachers–teachers who mean the most to them.

  13. nonebetter

my daughter graduated from pre-k last year and her godmother gave this to her as a gift i dropped it off to her K teachers a few weeks ago for signature and everyone loved the idea, it’s something any child will cherish once they are presented with it.

  14. Camille Brown

Wouldn’t that be a little tricky when in high school the student could have 6 or 7 teachers?

    • Ketsy

Not if you have them write on every page a message or so… the trick would be being responsible enough to keep it and doing… with moving or such seems like I owuld forget or lose the book Eek!

    • Cathy

I love this idea, but I agree it will get tricky in middle and high school. So i am going to start and give it my kids on their 5th grade graduation. My youngest is in preschool and I will have those teachers do it too.

  15. Suzanne

I LOVE THIS. My daughter graduates from Pre-K today. I’m going to do this!

  16. Laura

I did this for both of my kids. They are finishing pre-k and kinder. Love it!

  17. Victoria B.

I am doing this exact thing with my son. He is completing his first year of preschool and now I just need to think of a cute way to ask his teachers!

  18. Tarri

When my kids all graduated Kindergarten, they all had the same teacher. For each on of their graduations she read this book to the class. When my son graduated High School he went to Grad Night, they had at the school. One of the Souvenirs he came home with was this book. I thought that was great. We put it out for his graduation party.

I LOVE this idea – wish I would have heard about it years ago!

There is another cute book from the Curious George collection, Curious You, On your way. This is the one we use 🙂

  21. Amanda M

Would it be weird if i started at first grade? She is finishing 1st grade now, so her first grade teacher would be the first to write in it..

    • Tera @ Adventures in Mommy-hood

I’m starting now, and my boys are in preschool, 4th and 7th. I’m lucky enough that most of the older two’s teachers are still teaching in the area, so I’m going to go back and ask them to sign it. Won’t be able to get my oldest’s 1st or 3rd grade teachers, but that’s OK.

    • Kathy

      I don’t think it’s weird. She’ll still love it!

    • Kim

      Not at all, Amanda!

  22. Madsmom

I made a photo book for my nephews high school graduation. It was picturea of him for the last eighteen years! I used the free code from the best buy rewards email so it was free just pay shipping!

  23. mkw

We’re using this book as the guest book at our graduate’s party

    • Madsmom

That is a great idea! Thanks!

My children’s school has done this for their students, but it could be easily done by the parents. When my children are in kindergarten the school provides us with a large manilla envelope. This is their “time capsule”, we the parents can fill it with anything that we want for our children to remember this period of their life. Once we fill it and return it our school system holds onto it until they are seniors in high school. The night before they graduate there is a family potluck and they are given their envelopes to look at the contents of their time capsule.
I don’t quite remember all the things that I have included but here is some of it: a letter from me describing what I would like for her future and advice and encouragement, a list of best friends, a sample of child’s handwriting, a list of likes and dislikes at 5 yrs old, first crush, a list of favorite sayings, a coloring book page, pictures, etc etc etc. . My oldest child graduates in the beginning of June and we’re both looking forward to opening it. I’m told that this event is a tear jerker.
whats nice is that it can be very frugal yet more importantly very touching and emotional. This can be done at home just as long as it can be stored in a safe place where you wont lose it and won’t be tempted to open it.

I have been doing something similar for my son on his actual birthday. Every year since he turned one, I write him a letter telling him about all the things I learned about him that year. I also put in some words of advice as well. I put the letter in an envelope with the date (his birthday and year). I plan to give him all of the letters when he’s older. Maybe 18th birthday or wedding gift.

Someone gave this to my daughter several years ago when she graduated high school, i think it was her favorite gift!

  27. LisaR.

I LOVE LOVE this idea! My baby shower was book-themed where each guest had to gift the baby their favorite children’s book. I have also been collecting Dr. Seuss books since he was born ( My mom even sent me one of my old Dr. Seuss books!). Thanks for sharing this idea – what a beautiful gift!

  28. Christie

LOVE this idea, thank you for sharing it! 🙂

  29. Ashley

I started this with my daughter who was in Pre-K last year. Tomorrow I will give the book to her K teachers. I have a little pome that goes with it so the teachers know what to do.

Hey there! Do you know if they make any plugins to protect against hackers?
I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked
    hard on. Any suggestions?
