We have done these kits several times with our kids and they are so much fun! If you are trying out for the first time, the caterpillars do not come in the kit- just an fyi. You have to mail in a certificate, but they do arrive rather quickly.

We are doing this right now!!! My kids are so interested in it!

We also did it once, and it was really fun and the kids loved it.

Does anyone know the most economic way to ‘refill’ one? (Lol, other than going out and catching the caterpillars ourselves!)

These are wonderful kits. However, don’t get them for Christmas. You will be releasing the butterflies in the coldest part of the year for those of us in more northerly climates. This is when the rest of the buttterflies are already south. It will kill them to go from your warm house to the cold. It’s better to get them now, raise them and release them. It’s also nice to release them around a butterfly bush so that they will have a herd to meet up with.

My girls got this kit for Christmas, but I had enough sense to not request the caterpillars until early summer. I would hope everyone would have enough sense to not do this in the winter…lol

My daughter also got this for Christmas from her grandma. We just did this project a few weeks ago and it was well worth the wait. My kids ALL loved it and so did my husband and myself. You can order the caterpillars online too instead of sending the card in. It does cost $5 for them but they are so much fun to watch.

our girls love these weve bought 4 sets they r good about sending emails for discounts the customer service was great we got a crushed box and one set was dead no questions asked they send us a new set ive emailed them several times for general ?’s always very polite my 3yo just asked other day for a new set great investment even at the kinda high caterpillar price but well worth it

I find the caterpillar eggs myself. It’s REALLY easy actually. Just find some milkweed that is growing (it’s pretty abundant) and look on the underside of the leaves for tiny white eggs. 🙂 when the eggs hatch you will have caterpillars. Just put some milkweed into their habitat for them to eat. For more info just google it.

We are doing our second kit right now – a butterfly just hatche yesterday:)
Buying this kit is actually cheaper than sending away for more caterpillars, so I might have to snag another one as my daughter loves doing this.

    • Cara

Oh maybe it isn’t cheaper at this price, since there’s a handling fee for the caterpillars:)

I just placed an order to refill several habitats (praying mantis, ladybugs and caterpillars) and the shipping alone was $16, no matter how many animal refills I ordered (which is why we did all three at once). We were in big heaven for days in this house :)! It’s a great activity – and my hubby and I were just as interested in it as the kids.
