My low this week is my poor pitiful flower basket pictured above. I am sure all of you blessed with green thumbs are gasping at this sight and I am too! How hard is it to keep a flower basket watered and healthy?! Apparently a little too hard for me! Plus, it doesn’t help that the high temperatures in Boise have been in the triple digits!

So on to my high for the week. My oldest son, Nicholas, officially turned twelve on July 11th (yikes! only one more year until he is a teenager!). Since we already had a big celebration with all his friends, we had a low-key birthday party with just our family. And as you can see, I just had to include pictures of the cake – isn’t it adorable (and no, I did not bake it – I did us all a favor and bought it from the grocery store! 😉 ). Oh and yes, that’s the “Birthday candle” next to the cake – LOL! I had to improvise a bit since we couldn’t seem to find the birthday candles I had actually purchased.

[h2s_box]Every Wednesday, I share my high(s) and low(s) for the past week and I encourage you to do the same in the comment section below. My high(s) will simply be the best or most exciting thing that happened to me over the last week or so and my low(s) will be something not so great that took place. [/h2s_box]

    Happy Birthday! Super cute cake!

My LOW for the week is that my 16 year old daughter had a car accident only 2 weeks after getting her license. My HIGH was that she was safe and sound and the only thing injured was the vehicle and her nerves. Also..With the Petunia. You have to pull off the shriveled ones because if you don’t, much like Cilantro it will “Go to seed”. If the dead ones aren’t pulled, that’s the plants way of knowing “Ok it’s time for me to shut down”. Also, it needs full sun and lots of people make the same hiccup you made by hanging it very close under the gutter where the sun can’t really get it that well. You worry them to death maybe LOL. Throw something in the ground and it will grow…Water it or worry over it too much and it will surely die.

I got into an accident 16 days after getting my first car. It taught me so much more than years of safe driving ever could have. Glad to hear she’s ok!

    • Mayra

I too got in to an accident 2 weeks after I got my license a couple months ago…To make it worse I was driving my dad’s truck. 🙁 On the plus side I must say I’m way more cautious. Glad to hear she’s ok.

    • Karen

Sorry about the Petunia. In my experience, if they even get thirsty once, they get leggy and dry and never recover. 🙁

my high: I got to see one of the kittens my family was fostering today. we kept one out of 5. she looks exactly like the one we have. we still have mommy tho(yet to be adopted) anyone want to adopt a cat!!! haha 🙂 you know you want to

my low: it is super hot 🙁

Have you tried putting your plant in a container of water so the water can soak into the roots through the bottom of the pot? I used to do that with mine and it really helps– about once a week. It allows the soil to really soak up the moisture and it holds water better when you do water. I don’t know if it is too late for your plant. It might take a couple soaks. I would leave it in at least an hour, then set it on the lawn to kind of drain out before you hang it again.

  5. Pamela

The soil in hanging baskets dries out very quickly in the heat and becomes an impenetrable clod that will not soak up any water from overhead watering. So do soak it as rwild1 suggests. Then keep it watered 3 to 4 times a day in the heat!

My high for the week is that my son Samuel turns 13 tomorrow. He is my miracle baby that I had a year after losing my first child 35 weeks into my pregnancy.

My low for the week is that my 9 year old daughter already has a boy ringing the doorbell. God help me.

  6. Lana

I do have green thumbs and my plants are suffering from way too much rain. Your pot needs a very thorough watering everyday in hot weather. Hanging pots are really a pain to take care of in general. You could just throw that one out and go buy a new one 🙂

      • Michelle

        Hi Collin,
I would also water it deeply. You could also trim off all the dead stuff – give it a little haircut :). You put it in a bigger pot to give the roots some more room. A little shade would help too at least for a while until the heat breaks. Good luck! 🙂

My oldest just turned 12 today! So Happy Birthday to Nicholas! I still see her baby face in her 12 year old face. My low is that it’s going to cost over $900 to get my hubby’s brakes on his car fixed. Oh well at least you save me tons with Hip2Save Thanks!

    • christine

Uh oh. Sounds like a german car! Happy birthday to your kiddo!

  8. mommy1

High: Being able to spend so much time with the hubby while he is on sick leave from work
Low: Hubby not being able to go back to work after nearly 3 months still! BROKE lol

  9. Crystal

Low: My baby boy is a little cranky today.
High: Its my birthday today & I’m having lots of fun celebrating 🙂

    • Christine

      Happy Happy Birthday!!!

  10. Christine

Happy Birthday Nick! Cool Cake and the candle is even better! We have used the large dinner candlesticks before! Improvising makes it more fun! LOL

  11. Kristen

I LOVE the candle idea!! Lol too funny but cute!! 🙂

  12. Aimee

Make sure to trim off all the dead stems. If that is a petunia, that’s what it looks like from the picture, they do best if trimmed back once the high heat sets in. It will regrow and bloom again in a few weeks. Mine get spindley every summer in July and I trim them back and they do so much better. Once they are trimmed the plants nutrients go to the plant and not the dead stems. Good luck!

    • Allison

Aimee is right. Also when they are planted they are fed and it dissipates over a few weeks. Cut all the stem to about 5 inches (it will be SO ugly) and feed it Miracle Gro and in about 3 wks, it will look as beautiful as when you purchased it. Also petunias need sun 6-8 hrs a day, but with moist soil-not dripping wet. Happy Birthday to Nick!!

My high is that I passed my pedagogy and am fully licensed to teach math.

My low is that I only have 10 days of summer left with my girls because of professional development….

  13. jill

Laughing so hard at the candle BESIDE the cake!! That is soooo our house…Glade Christmas candle of course!

  14. karen

My grandparents were farmers, unfortunately, I didn’t seem to get the green thumb gene. Happy birthday to your son Collin, my son is also a Nicholas, can’t believe he’ll be 19 and heading to college this fall. Where did the time go? Enjoy these moments! Time goes by way to fast..

  15. Stephanie

My high was my husband saving the day when I was depressed on my birthday this week. He took me on a dream date to the Grand Ole Opry after stopping to let me pick out two new dresses (one of which I wore on the date). We went on to have a nice dinner and dancing in downtown Nashville. A great Birthday.

My low was today when I went to pick up my kids at my Grandmother’s house. She so graciously volunteered to babysit my 4 kids ages 1 – 8 while I went to a couple of Dr’s appointments today. She also graciously gave them terrible haircuts while she had them. It was the very first time two of my children had ever had their hair cut and we were purposefully letting it grow longer. Beautiful long curly locks. She cut all the curls out and gave them bangs. Crooked, too short bangs. The girls all got layers in the back. They look like mulletts on my girl’s fine, thin hair.

    • Beth

With all bad happenings, like the choppy hair cuts come with a funny story to laugh and giggle about later. I bet your girls still look adorable, and hopefully their hair will grow back before school starts.

    • justme

Oh how funny! At least it’s just hair and will grow back. One day you will find this hilarious story to be so precious. I’m sure she thought she was really helping you. In a few days you will be laughing a lot! Take pictures so that you can remember this one.

      • Stephanie

Thanks ladies. <3 I know she meant well. When I excused ourselves from her house I told her I wasn't mad, just increasingly emotional, as I hugged her tight and kissed her several times before walking out crying. I know it probably hurt her feelings though. She was so darn proud of herself up until that point. Dang it! I can't wait till I can laugh about this. I did just smile. Thanks again.

And Happy Birthday Nick! I hope yours was a great birthday too!!! From my impression of your mother I'd say it was awesome.

    • Lucy

If not for this being 1st haircuts for two of the kids I’d say laugh it off and take them in to get their cuts corrected. The 1st haircuts though are a bummer. Not even a chance to take a picture of them :/

  16. debbie

My high was seeing my little one learn to ride his bike without his training wheels. Watching him learn ti ride just melted my heart. 🙂 My low was getting my Discover card bill and a not so happy husband because we spent too much this month!! yikes

  17. cheapcheap goes the mommy

Loved the improv birthday candle. My daughter just turned 8. We had a clearance no. 8 we had saved ALL YEAR just for this birthday..umm..I saw it in the pantry last week and it totally vanished! I ended up putting eight candles on the cupcakes..oh well..i have three more kids I can pass it down to if it ever shows back up in my pantry! 🙂

  18. Vishnu

The cake is totally adorable. May be it will try making one some day. Tell me about kids growing up too fast. My daughter will be 3 in sep. miss baby time already. I am so like you. No green thumb here either. I could kill the easies plant to care for LOL. One and only orchid survived with no blooms :(, happy birthday again. Hope it was faun family day.

  19. Aryanna

My low was finding out that my brother & his wife are moving across the country next month. 🙁 We are close and this will be a hard transition as we see each other every weekend.

I have no highs to share at this point. 🙁

  20. Anna @ Frugal For You

I killed one of those hanging baskets with petunias too! And it was a Mother’s Day gift. BUT it reseeded and soon had flowers again, without my help. So don’t throw it out yet! It might surprise you in a month or so!

My high is spending more time at the pool and getting to know our lifeguard who is from overseas. My low is the hot and humid weather making everyone cranky!

  21. Valerie

Don’t feel bad, I used to work at a nursery in Arizona and we had to water those hanging plants 2-3 times a day to keep them looking nice! They look really pretty at the store but unless you can devote a lot of time to them they are not practical. 🙂

  22. Mara

My low for the week is having to report an employee that was mistreating me and others. My high is spending time with my boys. I love them so much!
