Sent from reader, Elizabeth:

This is my daughter Kayleigh with her gifts she made for her class. These cute pencils are made out of life savers and Hershey’s kisses… We took thick construction paper and folded it to make the appearance of pencils. The silver around the top is made out of tin foil. The kisses are used for the point of the pencil and the life savers make up the main part of the pencil. We took string and construction paper to write Happy 1st Day Of School. We made one for each student in her class.

The picture on the right is a gift for her teacher. We used a shadow box and cut crayons to make the first letter of her teachers name and then wrote her teacher’s last name on the side.

    Super cute!

What an adorable idea. And so sweet to think of giving the classmates a little gift. Teachers always get something, but your daughter’s classmates…? That is so sweet. Have a great new school year.

Cute! How did you make eraser?

    • Angie

I was just going to ask the same thing! I read the description 3 times looking for that info.

      • Elizabeth

We made the erasers out of thick pink construction paper (we got it at Staples with their weekly school deals)… I just cut out a pink circle for the top and glued it directly to the life savers and then cut a thin pink strip to wrap around the top… Then placed the tin foil around where the yellow and pink construction paper met. Thanks for all the well wishes she was so excited for her first day and said she was the only one to bring a gift for each student and it made her feel special.

Very cute. My son started Kindergarten on Monday and I think he was pretty exhausted by the today. His birthday is also coming up and I am deciding on a cute & crafty treat for the class that wont be too difficult.

Google robot snack craft and butterfly snack craft. I like them because they can both be good allergy free snacks! (Coming from a mom of a boy with allergies and teacher!)

      • Mia

I love the butterfly craft! You just need a clothes pin and ziplock bag. Our school is also strict with food (allergies not to use food as a reward)
Also, a warning about lifesavers. My daughter needed 911 services due to a lifesaver. She had to go to the ER when she was 7. It would make me very nervous if she was on a bus eating them.
I have also been told that if I send a snack in that makes a child sick by causing an allergic reaction, I could be liabale.

What an awesome cute money saving idea and hope the class and teacher enjoys their gift. I hope she has a great school year!

  6. Tisha

Very very cute idea. I want to definitely try this for my daughter’s class. Thank u so much for posting this. Hoping that all of our children (here on Hip2save) have a great & successful year.

  7. Ger

    Love this!

If anyone would like a little bit more of a close up of the pencils I do have another picture of my other daughter holding one, they aren’t in the best quality because they were taken in a hurry for the first day with my phone but it does show a little more detail.

    • chrissy1925

Yes, post it! And thanks for the response about the eraser 🙂

      • Elizabeth

Unfortunately it won’t let me post the picture on here but I can email it to you if you’d like. My email is elkrun8632@hotmail.com

What a great idea! Great job!

  11. Elizabeth

    LOVE IT!!!!

  12. Sue

What a cute craft and she is precious.

  13. J

So cute! You’re lucky you can pass out stuff like that. In our school, they would get tossed. We have a strict allergy policy with an “approved snack list” that you have to buy through the cafeteria at outrageous prices. Lollipops on Valentines? Forget it. Candy canes at Christmas? Birthday cupcakes? Not happening. 🙁

    • Jenny

That’s a good thing! It protects the kids that have food allergies. I’m not sure I would want my kid eating candy all day and coming home hyped up on suger. We cut processed sugar from our diet. BUT!!!! I think this is still super cute and I hope she had fun at school!

      • J

I’m on the fence. I totally understand where they are coming from and the policy was started the year my oldest started kinder, so it’s all we’ve ever known. My nieces go to another district and tell me all the time about the junk they get and I just shake my head. Selfishly, it just kind crushed my mental image of being THE mom that brought in those amazing cupcakes for my kids’ birthdays. But, if lack of candy and cupcakes is my biggest gripe about our school, I think we’re doing okay! 🙂 🙂

    • SandraNYC

No candy canes at Christmas!?!?!?!? That is super sad.

    • makaylaisabel

Be careful what you wish or at PTA! Lol. I had this convo today with other moms. A big issue now is uniforms. They meant well but kids want regular clothing too and sometimes its easier and appropriate. Its hot here in Florida and the necks on polos give rash too some. On top of that, we still have to buy clothing for the kids to use at home so double the expense. Not quite the idea that was sold to us. Such is life! We just have to be careful with extreme ideas! As far as snacks, I send in the box just in case or the recipe ingredients. Its up to the parents of the children with allergies to provide something for them.

      • J

I’m glad we don’t have uniforms! Our elementary has very lax dress code rules, the middle has stricter ones, but nothing extreme. They just want kids covered up. And if you don’t play by the rules, there is a very nice xxl bright yellow sweat suit waiting for kids to put on until mom brings in something more appropriate.

        • Gayatri

I support having uniforms in public schools. Uniforms save us money. By not having to buy the latest in fashion outfits to wear to school, three sets of uniforms will take the brunt of the school year. And also, uniforms level the ground for all kids. Also, getting dressed in the morning is super easy.

          • Hannah

The problem w/ uniforms is that they work really well for some people and not as well for others. Especially when kids get into middle and high school, they’re looking for ways to stand out and define themselves. If they don’t have clothing, they’ll just find something else–piercings, dyed hair (if you’re lucky).

  14. Amanda

This is so awesome!!! I might do this for my daughter to bring to her teachers!! I’m wondering how I would do a B though lol

    • Elizabeth

I had the same problem with my other daughter’s teacher her name started with a C. We drew the letter out in pencil and then placed the crayons on and fiddled with the placement of the cut crayons until we found a way we liked (it was a lot of trial and error lol). We ended up using whole crayons for the top of the round part and gradually made the crayons smaller and farther out on both sides to make the curves (I have a picture of hers as well if that would help).

  15. Christine

Really cute idea! Have a fun school year!

  16. amy

Absolutely dear! I love this idea! Thanks so much for sharing!!

  17. Sue

What a really cute & creative craft! Too bad my kiddo is a senior this year. Altho I’m sure they’d all eat the treats!

    • tilla ham

I actually think seniors would LOVE these and instead of a pencil you could cover it in construction paper and tie a ribbon in center to make it look like diploma…it would work with mentos, smarties, lifesavers…seniors LOVE LOVE LOVE the candy necklaces they make for graduation so I’m sure they’d love these

  18. Suzanne

    What a sweetie!

  19. Carol
