I’m No Robot…

Hip2Save may earn a small commission via affiliate links in this post. Read our full disclosure policy here.

Behind this computer screen, there is a person. No robot here. I have feelings, values, I have a voice, I am sensitive and can be loud at times. I am me.

I laugh often…

I cry…

I make mistakes…

I had no clue that my Target deal would create so much controversy. Had I known, I am not sure I would have posted. Not because I feel I did anything wrong but because the comments… well, got a little or I should say a lot out of hand. I truly value all of your opinions – even if you disagree with what I did. And I honestly like hearing what all of you have to say. I learn new things every single day from my readers. However, when the language starts to get inappropriate and bashing on one another and myself happens, it makes me feel sad about posting.

When you sit behind a computer screen, you are invisible. You can say what you want knowing that no one really knows who you are. But the question is, would you say the same things to someone’s face? Would you share your thoughts just the way you did when commenting?

If you aren’t comfortable reading Hip2Save any longer because you disagree with what I did, I understand. There are tons of other fantastic frugal blogs out there that may be better suited for you.

I’m not going to apologize for posting the deal I scored. I will, though, apologize for letting the commenting get out of hand. I want this site to be positive and fun. I want you all to smile and feel giddy when you hop on Hip2Save. ๐Ÿ™‚

And yes, I will be moderating comments on this post as I’m keeping things positive tonight!

People are selfish and rude and mean. I was reading the comments and so surprised at how people were being. How they were judging and finger pointing and name calling. An I worried about how that was effecting you. Your site is a blessing to my family- your hard work makes it possible for me to save so much money (plus its so fun to check in on all the deals!). Hang in there and know you are appreciated by most of us. And the others who choose a different path? Forget about them :0)

  2. Amy

I am a working mom and have not checked to see what happened but I work as a nurse and see people sick and die everyday. It saddens me to think people get upset over a deal and take it out on each other. Be thankful we are here with each other. Colin, your blog is something I look forward to each day and I like that you are keeping the negativity out of your life!

  3. Shannon

I love you and your site!! I have been a fan for so long I couldn’t imagine my couponing life without you and your site!

  4. Linda R

I LOVE YOU COLLIN! I’ve been a loyal follower since 2008 ๐Ÿ™‚ You are the best blog out there, you keep things real, and post the best deals. I also love the personal posts you write, you’re human, just like the rest of us! I’m sorry about what happened yesterday, there is no reason for people to be so mean to you. Truly sad that people think they can say terrible things since they’re “hiding” behind a computer. Keep up the amazing work!!!! <3

  5. Susan B.

WOW! I read some of the comments, and stopped b/c it was making me feel ill. I can’t imagine how you feel! So sorry you are being attacked. You did nothing wrong!!!!
I hope that those who are so judgemental DO find someplace else to bicker and complain. You certainly don’t need them here.

  6. Julie

I cannot believe that people are getting upset with you about this deal. I love coming to your site everyday for all the deals that you post and I could not stay at home without you!

  7. Lisa

  10. nancy

although i’ve been visiting your site for over a year now i never comment but wanted to take a minute to tell you how grateful i am for all of the effort you put into compiling/posting sooo much great information. i love your site and love reading your stories! keep up the great work!

  11. Holly C.

I felt sick to my stomach when I was reading the comments on the other post – it shocked me how callous and unfeeling people can be. Every deal is not for everyone, if you don’t like it then don’t do it. Made me think of the lemon water controversy ๐Ÿ™‚ Make lemonade Collin! Thank you for all that you do! You have helped save my family thousands of dollars over the last few years, not to mention that we have been able to give more to charities than we ever did before (on a much reduced income thanks to the continuing furloughs). There were months that we wouldn’t have been able to make ends meet if it wasn’t for the free toiletries and cheap food deals that you post.

  12. cris

Love Love Hip 2Save. You are an amazing person and I too felt many comments were crude and unneccessary. I would say 99.999% of the people on here will agree you provide an invaluable tool for us to save. Thank you so much for all your time and hard work—-please don’t ever stop posting ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Erica

Collin you have been a key part of my ability to stay frugal and keep my family in budget! I am sad to hear that others would use your site and than have mean and unfriendly comments. You are always happy, positive and inspiring! Keep up the great work!

  14. Tracey

Wow Collin! I do not know what happened, but I really hope all of these positive comments help you to realize how appreciated you are! Some people are just plain rude and need to go take a hike! I am one of the many people that really appreciates your hard work to help us save money. Thank you Collin!

  15. puppy

Ignore all the negativity – We love what you do for us, u make our lives more easy to travel… All the best

  16. Lisa

Collin, I don’t know what happened about your post, because my Dad just passed away last week and I haven’t been on here. I want you to know that your blog site is the best and if I had to only pick one it would be this one. Thank you for all you do. Keep your chin up as they say.

    • Sharon

Just wanted to say sorry Lisa for the loss of your Father. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

You just keep on doing what you’ve been doing girlfriend with your head held high. Your blog is absolutely the best of the best. And you are obviously a stand-up, quality gal.

And here is why IMHO you stand head and shoulders over the other blogs…you take time to make sure there are no typos, you make corrections when one of your readers points something out, and every week you post your highs and lows. And most of all you are HUMAN (I love your POOP t-shirt), funny, thoughtful and kind. It shows through in everything you do. I have never met you but feel like I know you.

Thank you for saving me and my family money and keep up the good work ๐Ÿ˜‰

  18. jayseemm

Does anyone know if it is still working this morning? I’m in Pa.!

  19. Deb

People like you said are brave when they sit behind a computer screen. Cowardly is what it is! I LOVE your site and am so happy that I found it! Ignore the rude people, this world has enough problems that are worth commenting on and if people are going to bash someone for a post on Hip 2 Save-shame on them!

  20. Jenn

After reading this post, I went back to see what all the fuss was about, and holy crap ! Wow ! People have too much time on their hands. Anyways I am personally thankful for all the hard work that is put into this site. Not only do I save money, but I save something so much more valuable, TIME ! If I had to go through and figure out every single deal that I see posted on here, I would never have time to go shopping for the stuff, between working, and taking care of my family. Collin does the grunt work for us. All we have to do is read, make our list, and shop. She was in the right place at the right time and got an awesome deal. I just managed to squeak out a $750.00 32G iPhone 5s, for $99.00, due to taking advantage of their trade in deal. Verizon probably expected most folks to have their current phone to trade in, but due to our situation, i had 2 phones to trade, so I got a great deal. Do I feel bad, nope, not one bit. So, Collin, THANK YOU , for your time, patience, and knowledge, and please keep on posting !

  21. Candy P

Everything in this world is a choice. It was the retailers choice to post the coupon. It is our choice whether to use it or not. It is also our choice to behave like adults or not. COLLIN, IT IS NOT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY WHEN PEOPLE BEHAVE BADLY! I admire what you have accomplished with this site. I save $ every time I go there. Yesterday I got 3 pc’s covered with Norton 360 for $13.30! And Norton is still making money on the deal you can be sure! Hold your head high and don’t let the turkeys get you down : )

  22. Amy

I’m on your web site multiple times a day and I have at times wondered on some things that you’ve posted. Either way it’s up to me if I want to use it or not. If I do and there’s a problem, then in the end it’s the retailer’s decision if it’s acceptable or not, and I leave it at that. Most people are rude and don’t care about how it makes the other person feel. I work in a fast food restaurant and I know this very well. I appreciate the hard work you do for us to help save money and it’s helped me and my husband a great deal. THANK YOU!!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. Steph S.

Go you! I like this posting and I definitely don’t think there’s anything you should be sorry for. If people didn’t like your deal post, then why even bother commenting? I believe everyone should move on from posting a comment if it’s going to be negative or rude.
I love your site and please keep posting the great deals! I’m very glad you posted this last one, as my boyfriend got a new watch for free ($19.99 value) and I got a cute necklace for myself ($9.99). We then thought it was awesome to just split the cost of that 2nd purchase ๐Ÿ˜€ Can’t beat a $5 necklace and $5 watch, right?!

  24. Paris L

This deal was amazing, went to target last night and was able to snag a $2.39 earings with a $39 watch free. No issues with the cashier. Amazing deals, Thanks Collin for always bringing out amazing deals for us to use. Don’t let negative comment deter you from posting deals like these in the future.
I will be running hosting a charity drive in the last week of October for Breast Cancer Survivors and will be donating the watch. Thanks for helping me make a great contribution.

  25. Sharon

Collin, I would like you to know why I follow you! Have couponed for decades and while I love the deals, coupons and sales, I check in each day because I love your heart. I see how much you put into this, how you show your vulnerabilities, that you do care about others, that you can be silly at laugh at yourself and that your not afraid to be just you. Thanks so much for all that you do that makes a difference in many people lives. You have a ton of followers who will never meet you but still feel like a part of your family.

  26. Erin

You are amazing Collin. Do not let selfish , rude and kindless people get to you. You are amazing at all you do and you have saved my family so much money. I look at your site daily!!!!! I would be lost without you!!!!!!

  27. deb

I love your blog Collin. I check it frequently during the day (yea for the app!). I have saved tons of money with your tips & ideas. Everyday I can find something new to print, send away for or buy. Love your Highs & Lows blog too, always makes me smile. You are like “a friend in my head”, as Wendy Williams would say. Never forget how much loved you are by all of us out here <3

  28. Lynne Heinrich

I hope you know how much help you have been to so many of us. My husband lost his job 3 years ago and our household income was cut 60%. Fortunately I have a decent job, but your site was what gets us through each month. Thank you!!

  29. jayseemm

Collin; I truly hope you see how much good you are doing… Job well done โˆš

  30. Renee

Just thought I would add my 2 cents…I agree with what a lot of other people have said here. I too had to stop reading the comments on the other post. They were getting out of hand. There was no need for some of the nasty things that were being said. I check your blog multiple times a day just to see what new deals have come up. I have saved so much money because of you. Although, I find a lot of deals here, not every deal is for me but I don’t feel the need to bash you or criticize you for those. I just move on. Thank you for all you do. By the way, I talk about your blog so much, my husband knows exactly who Collin is.

  31. Dayna

Collin, I’m sure everyone appreciates the hard work you put in to making this site so awesome! I look forward to checking it everyday (ok, several times a day) to see what new deals have been posted. This site has saved me lots of money and I’m also able to score deals to give to friends or to donate. Keep up the good work and don’t let people get you down!!

  32. Sonya

This is the first blog I check in the morning. What the heck happened yesterday? I read a few comments here and had to go back to check what all the fuss was about…

Really people, Colin is right. It’s easy to sit at your computer and post nasty comments. Just remember, what you do comes back to you ( good or bad ).

Colin – Don’t worry about the “haters.” Put your “big girl panties” on and face the world with your positive and upbeat attitude. If everything is rainbows, unicorns, and cupcakes you never know what you are made of ( or who your real friend are )…

  33. Julie

Colin ~ Thank you for being the special person you are ๐Ÿ™‚ I have been a “hip2saver” for over 3 years and appreciate all the effort you put forth to help my family and others save money on every day items as well as great gift ideas! Wishing you a bright and wonderful Wednesday!!!

  34. Katelyn Bellingham

This is nothing an Irish coffee wouldn’t fix, mamacita! <3 I don't know what happened but you are amazing. Don't let anyone drag you down. You are the best, you're so smart and funny and I love this site so much! God bless!

  35. Missy

Not all bully’s are found in schools. :o) Hang tough Collin! Love ya!

  36. Jess

I am so thankful for what you do! You help my family save so much money! I recommend this site to everyone!

  37. Laura

    Hey Collin,
Just wanted to let you know how much i appreciate how much work you do on this site and letting us know the deals that are out there! I love Hip2save!

  38. Coleen6000

I hope they are happy now…those negative posters!!! As my grandmother always said, ” If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything!” Collin, I feel terrible that your feelings were hurt. You don’t deserve any of that… What a shame!

  39. k

I love your site and thank you for your hard work!

  40. Dev Zeller

Yikes, I am so sorry for the Target posts. From the ‘I am not a Robot’ post I thought you walked out of the store with a Nerf Gun or something. I normally do not look at what others say, as people seem to have a great regard for you. Sadly I was mistaken. However don’t let a few spoiled apples……
I thank you for your time and efforts with the site. My friends and family find great benefits from Hip2Save. If Target did not want the coupon to work as used, they are free to change it. Just as any adult is free to not use the coupon in that manner. I assume it is easier to pick and choose when to be righteous, then it is to just move on to the next post.
Be strong many of us appreciate you, myself included.

  41. Nina

I’ve been reading your blog since I began couponing and know that you have helped my family out so much..not just in savings but by also making my day just from reading an entry. So, don’t let it get you down. You are awesome! Thank you for all you do!

  42. Lindsay

You are human, Collin. Regardless of whatever it may be, others are so quick to jump on the bandwagon with “Tear Someone Down” written on the side. I don’t care about the previous post (or what others had to say and you shouldn’t either) – Don’t apologize. Eleanor Roosevelt said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” I try to live by this everyday. Keep your smile on and keep doing what you are doing!

  43. mrsf15e

We saw you walking in your neighborhood last week as we drove by to get coffee, and I said to the kids we saw a celebrity! They said, Mom, she is not a celebrity. I said you were to couponers! I know it is hard to decide how much of yourself to post, but that is why I like your blog the best, you are human! Have a lovely fall Boise day!

  44. Sbrj

I’ve never posted here, but I read this post and it makes me sad! I’ve been on this site for over a year now and I love it. Keeping track of sales/deals/coupons takes such a long time and you do it multiple times throughout the day/night. I appreciate it so much. I even forward links to my friends and family.

Not every deal interests me, but that’s ok! That’s normal! If I glance at it and move on. No big deal.

I think the target deal was awesome. I didn’t use this particular deal cause I don’t give my cell # out, but I have no problem with deals like this. My basic understanding (and it could be wrong!) is that stores aren’t allowed to bait and switch consumers. And if there’s ambiguity in an ad, then the interpretation is skewed towards the consumers. If something is advertised at $5 on the shelf and rings up as $10 at the register, I make sure to speak up!

I think you’re doing a awesome job and I’m incredibly grateful for it! Thank you!

  45. Brenda

Collin, you do an amazing job! I’m so sorry people were so negative towards you! There was no need to treat anybody that way …especially someone who does so much to help all of us reading your blog. If the people didn’t like the deal, even though you did nothing wrong in using and posting it, they didn’t need to take part in it but too make comments that some of these people did is rude and so unkind. Thank you for all that you do Collin!!! Keep up the good work!!!

  46. shannon

I read a quote once that said something like when you have a choice between being right and being kind, always choose being kind.

  47. Heather H.

I have visited your blog multiple times DAILY for years. Without you, I wouldn’t be able to survive as well as I do as a single mom. When I divorced my husband, my income was cut by 2/3, and clipping coupons and finding deals isn’t just for fun, it’s a necessity for me and my son. You probably never hear often enough how much your readers appreciate you, but we do. Every single day. Know that for every one negative person there are at least 1,000 people rooting for you. Having a blog unfortunately puts you in the position to have to hear from people who only want to spread negativity. You are always a positive light in my day, thank you so much for all you do.

  48. Ashley

My hubby suggested that Target (and other stores) should hire some of the best coupon bloggers out there (AKA you) as part of their couponing team to help them ensure that their coupons work the way they intend them to before they send them out to people. Someone at Target should have been responsible for quality assurance–so why not a top notch couponer who knows all the ins and outs of coupon policies? ๐Ÿ™‚ Anywho, thanks for all you do! This is my favorite coupon blog. I spend time with you every morning while I sip my coffee, and you helped my hubby and I endure a time of unemployment. I’m truly grateful for your site and all the hard work that goes behind it!

  49. kendall

I am so sorry you had to deal with negative comments – you are such a positive person and you help SO many people on a daily basis. Please know that you are loved, Collin! ๐Ÿ™‚

  50. Melanie M

I don’t think it was a “deal”. It was, in fact, an error. I think we all know in our heart of hearts when you buy a $3 piece of jewelry a store is not going to give you a $50 watch free. I agree that people should not get out of hand with their comments but I do feel that people should be able to disagree in a calm, adult manner.
