Rapid Response Strep A Test Hip2Save

READER TIP: About once a year my family gets Strep. About 2 more times a year we *think* we have Strep. I just found on Amazon where you can order Rapid Strep Tests to test at home. They are $35 for 25 tests, and have quite positive reviews. Just this morning I took my son to the doctor with all Strep symptoms present, only to find out he has a cold. My copay was more than 25 strep tests. Buying this kit one time pays for itself. Thanks Collin and Happy Thanksgiving!

Have any of you purchased this before? Thoughts?

How are the expiration dates on them?

  2. rach

    totally looking into this.
    thanks for posting it!!

  3. amanda

Thank you for posting this! I meant to order one last year but forgot. We had strep go through our house 3x last year.

    • Em

3X- yuck! It’s so terrible. Make sure (and you may already know this) to change everyone’s toothbrushes when you start antibiotics and then again when you’re done with them. Dollar General has an 8pack of toothbrushes that work great for those few days in between starting and finishing your meds. The toothbrushes are pretty crappy, but you aren’t using them for long 🙂

  4. Katie

Note that they are the rapid strep tests not the cultures.

We had strep G recently at my house. With scarlet fever as a complication for my husband! Fun times.

    • Em

Curiosity- do you guys drink raw milk?

      • katie

Nope. Not do we hang out with livestock. But we have friends who do both. We guess they shared!

  5. Kristin

I work in a doctors office and that is the exact same kit we use!

  6. Dakotah

I work at a Health Center and this is the same test we use!

  7. teena

What do you do if its positive? Do you still have to go to the doctor to get a script?

    • Em

Yes. Strep is one of the things you don’t mess around with. It can literally kill you if left untreated. This just saves you from going to the doctor to find out you just have post nasal drip or something else.

      • Katie

I definitely wouldn’t let a child’s case of strep go untreated, but usually a doctor will let a mild case of adult strep go, because a healthy immune system can usually fight it off. That’s why my kids get strep 2 or 3 times a year, and my husband and I never do. Just a thought, if you’re one that tries to avoid antibiodics when possible.

So basically if we suspect it – and I have come to know it myself as I get it oh too often – take the test at home so that we are sure before we go in and find out that it’s negative. interesting. and then yes, how long/years will this last?

  9. KH

Please be careful with this test. I work in a hospital medical lab and we use a similar kit. All rapid strep testing has a high false negative rate. We always follow ALL of our rapid tests on children with a traditional culture because of the high false negatives (they grow out about 20% of the time) AND because it is so important to treat strep in children.

    • KH

Hate to harp on this, but here is a journal article that shows just how unreliable the kits are and you can also Google “false negative rapid strep kits” and you’ll get hundreds of hits. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2095077/

      • Rebecca

I always insist on the culture test, too. For whatever reason, my kids seem to test negative on the quick more often than not.

    • Em

That’s an excellent point about the culture.

    • Allison

I AGREE! Please do not take a chance with these strips alone. If you think that you or a loved one has strep go to the doctor and have the appropriate tests ran. I had a cousin to die from complications from the strep virus just three years ago. She was a normal healthy 13 year old girl. I am all about saving money but when it comes to my children’s health I will spend my last penny to make sure that they have the care they need.

    • superchelseald

Thank you- I have tested negative on the quick test SO many times only to have the culture come back positive for strep- why chance it?! The danger is NOT worth the $avings!

  10. rach

I’ve been reading the reviews…what I have found out so far:
*this kit only tests for 1 type of strep (there are about 4 types out there)
*some customers have had a negative at home, but @ the doctor’s office it came up positive
I’m not sure I would feel ok with getting a negative and still still feeling horrible (or a family member). Like someone else said strep isn’t something you want to mess with and I would worry even with a negative test result.
That said, I like the idea of this product very much.

  11. Alicia

Pretty cool, but I will say that every single time I have had strep it never showed up on the rapid strep test, but would on the culture. So- I wouldn’t necessarily rule out strep just because these things come back negative.

  12. Laura

These quick strep test’s results are really not that accurate. If the test indicates positive, then you do have strep. If the test shows negative, it could be negative or positive. There is a high failure rate on these. So, whatever the test results are… you will probably still need that doctor’s appointment.

  13. Amy

Good idea but not worth the risk. Since we have all tested negative and half the time had a culture come up positive, I will stick it out with my co pay I don’t like over use of antibiotics but untreated strep does cause problems.

  14. Susan

    Hi all,

I have been a urgent care nurse for 32 years. I have this strep test at home too. They are the exact same tests that we use in urgent care.

  15. Laura

I am a RN and love the idea of this. The last time Strept went through our house a Dr friend told us Antibiotics could be avoided with the following remedy that has worked EVERYTIME for us.

Gargle equal parts of liquid Benadryl (we use the clear kids)and Hydrogen Peroxide 3-4 times daily until better.

    • tia

Thanks, Laura! Unfortunately, not all of us can go to the dr. every time we suspect we might have something.

    • Em

I’m actually surprised as a RN that you would recommend this. Or that the doctor would. I know I wouldn’t. Just wait until that strep travels down to the heart and kills your child. There are plenty of things that I don’t believe in medicine for- strep is not one of those.

  16. Karen

Took my daugter for a strep test on a Thursday morning. It was negative. She had already missed school for 2 days with a fever and sore throat. The doctor said she could go back on Friday so I sent her. On Tuesday (no fever anymore, but still a sore throat) I get a call that they sent out for a culture and it had come back positive! So 5 days (yes 5 days!!!!) later they put her on antibiotics for strep. Not sure these rapid test would be for us. Thanks for the suggestion though. Our copay is $20 and if I can avoid the doctor I will! 🙂

  17. sandie

this is perfect! I work for a Doctors office and we test for strep so much! Just make sure to read all the instructions!

  18. sara

If you suspect strep go to the dr. It can damage the heart if left untreated. I had a case of strep in college and the test came back negative so no antibiotics and the campus health dept sent me on my way. 3 days later I was admitted to the hospital for abscessed tonsils. 5 days in the hospital tonsillectomy. I will gladly spend my $25 copay everytime to make sure a culture is done if strep is suspected for me or my kids.

  19. Jessica

I never knew people had strep so often until I read through these comments. I remember having it once as a child and neither of my children have ever had it. Maybe we are just a healthy family?

    • Christine

We used to get strep (our 8 year old never has had it). My kids are so healthy now. They take vit. c, vit d3, and eat very healthy. They go to the dr. every 2 years for a checkup and that is pretty much it.

  20. Jennifer

I like the idea of being able to give a strep test at home because our insurance does not cover them, but by daughter has tested negative on the rapid strep 3 times and each time the culture came back positive. My son, however, only needs the rapid test to be diagnosed.

  21. holly

Had no idea there was a culture you could request. My kids haven’t had it yet, but get “colds” several times a year. These comments have been helpful.

    • tilla ham

unless they have a ragingly painful sore throat with some sort of mouth sores , whiteness, or rash then no reason to test for strep

  22. Laura

Strep is never something to mess with. My sister developed rheumatic fever from undetected and untreated strep..she was in the hospital for a long time and has never been quite the same due to the heart medication she had to take for years! My friends’ son developed scarlet fever from undetected strep….super scary to rely on home tests!

  23. tilla ham

I don’t recommend any medical screening at home. there is a reason doctors go to school for a decade, and we did not. however, having said that, as a mom, I am always right about strep, after 4 kids…and I wouldn’t need this kit to tell me. My kids either get white in the backs of their throats or sores, the sore throat is more painful than just a nasal drip sore throat

Previous post talked about changing toothbrushes which is a great idea. In our house every person has their own toothpaste. We rarely share illnesses. With Collins great deals this do able.
