Heads-up for all you Amazon Prime members/Amazon Student Members or those of you considering a membership! Amazon.com has just announced that existing Prime members will now pay $99 per year on their annual renewal date and Amazon Student members will pay $49. If you are an existing Prime Member, you will be receiving an email from Amazon sometime today with this announcement and the date that your membership is set to renew. If you are not interested in renewing at this increased rate, you will want to log into your Amazon Account and go to the Manage Prime Membership page.

For those of you who currently use Amazon Prime, will you be renewing at this increased rate?!

If you’re not familiar with Prime (or have been considering a membership), now is the time to sign-up as it appears the annual rate for new members is still $79/year (or you can opt sign up for a 30-day FREE trial of Amazon Prime)! With Amazon Prime, you’ll get FREE 2-day shipping on select items sold by Amazon with no minimum purchase necessary, and unlimited, instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime Instant Videos on hundreds of compatible devices including computers, TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, and set-top boxes. Plus, you’ll have access to thousands of books to borrow for free, as frequently as once a month, with no due dates through the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

The little increases add up over time. We got cable/internet from a company 4 years ago and my bill was $94 then, I haven’t changed a thing and the other day my bill was $158! In four years, the extra $1-2 a bill has increased it by nearly $65. I had enough and turned it off. We will keep Amazon Prime for movies and streaming, but honestly with the weather getting nicer nobody in my house misses cable. Plus my kids have learned to play with their imaginations and toys again!

I pay $7.99 monthly for Amazon Prime. Does anyone know what my increase will be?

Still worth it! I’ll definitely be renewing.

Brilliant! Thanks for posting this work-around. I have the misfortune of my renewal date being the SAME as the rate increase date of April 17th. I called today asking for a break on the bum luck of missing the cut-off by one day, and they said they couldn’t help me. I even talked to a supervisor and I even offered to renew today at $79 and forfeit the last month of my current prime year, but they said it was all automated and unable to be changed.

This is wonderful! All set up to receive my “gift” one day before I expire.
      Thanks!

I actually think they will be shooting themselves in the foot doing this. I just read an article talking about how all these stores are closing because of Amazon and then Amazon raises their Prime rate. Their attitude is getting as bad a Walmart. They think people need them and they can do what they want. I used Prime the first year they started it and then didn’t renew. I only signed up to get diapers on two day shipping and then they said with prime I couldn’t get two day shipping on diapers. I don’t miss it. Whatever good deals they have another store will have also. I even made it through last Christmas WITHOUT Amazon.

You know in England I used to use Amazon for everything, they had the free shipping available, anything I need, first web to go to get it. As soon as I moved to US and saw they do not offer free shipping unless you spend a certain amount or get amazon prime, I stopped, I had not bought a single thing in all this time, ebay is my to go place. I feel like they are overcharging big time. Most of the time I even find their stuff on other websites cheaper so heads up for regular costumers. When I was shopping for furniture they had some things almost as twice the price than IKEA, where the furniture was originated from.

I have a question – with the Amazon Prime Lending Library can you use it on an Ipad with the kindle reading app installed or do you have to actually own a Kindle to borrow the books?
