If you have a credit card, are you aware of all the perks and benefits available to you as a cardholder? Hip2Save reader, Kayla, was pleasantly surprised at what she discovered about her Discover Card when she ended up with an expensive pair of too-large rainboots that came with a no-return policy. Check out the email that she sent me last week…

I just found out about an awesome free perk of having a Discover Credit Card! I recently bought a pair of expensive rain boots on sale. The company suggested ordering a size down since they run large. When my order arrived, I was disappointed to find the boots were still too big! I contacted the company to do an exchange, but was told since it was a final sale item there would be no returns or exchanges.

I reached out to Discover Card to see if they could help and come to find out I have Return Guarantee! All I have to do is fill out a claim form, mail the boots to them at my expense, and they will send me a check for the purchase price! The boots do have to be in the original packing and I need my receipt.

I figure spending the $10 or so on shipping is better than being stuck trying to sell them on eBay or wearing three pairs of socks to make them fit. The Guarantee covers purchases up to $500 and you can claim up to $2,500 a year. It’s good for up to 90 days after purchase. Works for in-store and online purchases and it doesn’t matter what the stores return policy is. Just wanted to share, in case it helps other Hip2Savers!

Discover Card is fabulous to work with. I’ve had issues with merchants in the past and they have worked with me every time to resolve the issue. Plus, cash back! Can’t beat that. I choose that card over any other just because of their perks and their customer service.

Yes, most credit cards offer assistance to their customers and that is one of the major benefits of using a credit (versus a debit) card. However, as mentioned, in order to take advantage of the extended warranty (most cards double the product warranty) you must have ALL the original packaging as well as the original receipt. Kind of difficult to find space to retain all of that, I think.

Wow, that is great. I used their price protection guarantee in December. Easy process and got $16 back.

Wonder how that works for in-store purchases. I had no idea and have been with Discover FOREVER and like Jessica above, I love them.. Thanks for the info.

WOW! I wonder if you can do this at Forever 21- they have a no return/exchange or store credit only policy. Will be interesting to find out!

I love my discover card. Their online cash back starts at 5%, and is often better than ebates or SAH. IPlus, you can use your cashback to buy gift cards for less than value. Example: you get a $25 gift card for $20 cash back.

I don’t think buyer protection is anything that is unique to Discover. My AmEX has done that a couple of times. Even if say your heel breaks on a shoe within the first 6 mos of ownership and the store won’t take it back (or ou’re past the return window), you can still get a refund for a defective product. The buyer protection is def not worth going to Discover card, who IMHO prays on people with bad credit and has comparatively high interest rates.

Idk but I and many of my friends do not have bad credit. We love our discover card and the many perks. IMHO.

I agree with you, Meg. I have excellent credit and my discover card is by far my lowest interest rate. I absolutely love my discover card!

I use Discover Card because it is the Sam’s Club credit card. Although I usually use Costco, and make most of my purchases on their Amex card, I’ve found it worthwhile to also keep my Sam’s Club membership. I would not say that you have bad credit as a rule if you shop at Sam’s??? Also, I make it a policy to pay off my cards in full (and it took a lot of work and years to get to this position!) so I don’t have to deal with the exorbitant rates on credit cards.

I think the point being that you might not think to go to your credit card customer service for a wrong size issue with no returns. Some might just chalk it up to a bad purchase and kicking themselves for not reading the fine print. I did that with Amazon, I bought items for an easter basket in February and they didn’t fit in April but I only had 30 days to exchange or refund. I wanted an exchange and there was not anyway Amazon was going to do it. I didn’t think of going through my Discover until I just got a mailer last week stating some of these benefits. So I may be out shipping, but at least not all of my money.

Discover definitely has a lot of perks. Love them!

I never looked into it, but my Chase (Visa) card has benefits for towing/car rental I believe. That would have been good to know when we were stranded in the middle of nowhere last summer and our car died. We spent so much money on that!

Many cards now have event days with different venues in your area. Where I live if you have a Bank of America card you can go to the zoo for free every first weekend of the month.

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I love Discover already, this just makes it better. I’ve had this issue in the past and was not aware of this great benefit. Thank you!
