Knots are “knot” hair goals! 😬

If you experience tears and battles when brushing/combing your kiddo’s hair (or even your own!), you have got to try this easy & super cheap DIY hair detangler spray that uses items you probably already have at home!

Brushing my daughter’s hair is quite a struggle since it’s getting so long.

I love to brush her hair, but unfortunately, it’s not her favorite part of the day because, like many other kids, her head is so sensitive and her thin hair gets tangled so easily… that is until I discovered a way to make affordable hair detangler spray that actually works!

To make your DIY hair detangler all you’ll need is a spray bottle, hair conditioner, some hot water, and a whisk to blend it all together.

You’ll only need 2 tablespoons of your favorite conditioner to make the perfect hair detangler solution which will fill up about an 8-ounce bottle. To easily measure your conditioner, lightly tap your measuring spoon on the edge on your bowl to level it out.

Looking for the best conditioner to use for hair detangling spray?

I love the TotLogic Kid conditioner in the Lavender Bliss scent. It’s on the pricier side compared to other brands ($12.60 for an 8 oz. bottle), but I love that ALL TotLogic products are hypoallergenic and free of sulfates, formaldehyde, phthalates, and parabens — so it’s totally worth it to spend a little bit extra. They’re also vegan and cruelty-free – and smells amazing! 🙌

Even better, this entire bottle of conditioner will make about 8 or more bottles of DIY hair detangler. 😱 That’s only about $1.61 for my DIY, and that’ almost $8 cheaper than the last bottle of hair detangler I bought (and it didn’t even work that great).

While we’re on the topic of products I love…

This special spray bottle is a MUST for DIY hair products.

I have to just take a minute to feature this spray bottle I found on Amazon. While any spray bottle should suffice for this DIY hair detangler, I especially love this bottle which is specifically made for hair products and can handle thicker solutions.

Unlike you’re average spray bottle though, this Beautify Beauties one produces a light mist all over your hair, rather than a condensing spray in just one area. Until I made this hair detangler, I had never used a bottle like this, but I can’t imagine ever going back because I’m that impressed. I also feel like because it mists all over with just one squirt, I will get the most out of my products.

Now it’s time to spray & brush!

With just a couple of sprays to coat all of my daughter’s hair, we made it through hair brushing time with NO tears! Wow, I can’t tell you how good that feels and I know she feels even better with her little head not hurting.

I have tried a lot of hair detanglers in the past and none of them work even close to as good as this DIY. The best part is that it’s even cheaper than buying already made detangler at the store or online! Win!

Bonus Tip: If your little one has long hair, you can put two braids in it before they go to bed. This will help limit bedhead and those troublesome bird’s nests that get all tangled up when they wake up. As another bonus, my daughter enjoys taking them out in the morning because it gives her hair a little crimped curl, which she loves!

I have been using the Bolero Dollar Tree find thats made with coconut oil. Bonus that it has a beachy summer smell for this time of year. There are other scent available too.

    • Sara

Sounds great! Thanks for sharing that with us, MelRox!

    • *Angela-Miles*

I’ve been using a detangler spray I found at the dollar tree also. Didn’t know the name of it tho.

  2. Lisa

Does the detangler still spray on well after the water cools?

    • Sara

Yes, Lisa! It’s been about a month since I made it and it hasn’t changed consistency at all. The bottle I shared in this post works incredibly too!

    • Amy

I’ve been making this for years with various different conditioners and I’ve found that some separate a bit but you just need to shake it up 🙂

  3. Indhu

I was using this just when I wash my hair since tangles are more then. But the solution starts to smell bad after a few days. I had to throw it away.

    • Sara

I’m sorry to hear that. I’m not sure if it’s the product you were using, but ours still smells the same as day one!

    • Figmaup

Wonder if you use distilled water if that would help?

      • Johnnie Senn Graves

That is what I use is distilled water. It has never gone bad.

  4. auntieb

I also do this!! I usually just squirt the conditioner into my spray bottle and add the hot water to the bottle and shake! If you have clumps of conditioner floating it’s bc the water wasn’t hot enough but with enough shaking, over time it all blends together.

    • Sara

Thanks for sharing, auntieb! I’m so happy to hear this has worked for you!

  5. Sarah

I just use a very small dot (like 1/2 the size of a dime) of conditioner on my daughters hair after a shower and it works perfect to get out all the tangles on her long hair while its still wet. Don’t have to mess with extra bottles or different products either.

    • Sara

Thanks for sharing, Sarah! I love this frugal approach. 🙂

  6. Denver

Love this idea. Dollar Tree has mini spray bottles in cosmetic section.

The name is a bit silly, but that Beautify Beauties bottle is the bomb. A hair dresser used it on me, and I went home and ordered one for myself. I’ve also given a couple away. Everyone loves it and it’s still going strong after 2+ years.

  8. Annie

    Thanks
    Thats smart.

  9. Amber

I always add a few drops of tea tree oil to it as well. It helps prevent lice and also helps keep gnats and ticks away.

  10. Alexia

Dose the detangler makes your hair greasy?

    • Sara

I don’t find that it makes my daughter’s hair greasy at all Alexia. I think the bottle I shared in the post does a really great job at dispersing the product though and really makes a difference!

  11. tipaye

Hi, the ingredient list contains “leave in conditioner.” I thought that was what we are making using regular conditioner that is watered-down? Could be a typo, or perhaps I’m reading it wrong 🤓

    • Sara

You’re so right, thanks for catching that, tipaye! 🙂 I updated the post and for future reference, you could use either! Thanks again!

  12. Belinda Johnson

I’m 64 and have hair below my shoulders, highlighted blonde. And live in SW Florida. What is the best detailing brush for aging beauties? Thanks for all yalls tips.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hey Belinda! This Wet Brush is suitable for all hair types, detangles, and is a team-favorite, if you’d like to check that out! Hoping this might be helpful! 🤞💞
