Directions

1

Use a hot glue gun to glue the corners of the candy boxes together, and also glue to a piece of cardboard for the bottom of the basket.

2

Glue a handle to the inside middle of the basket. This can be a headband as shown, a piece of craft foam, or a rope type of packaged candy.

3

Embellish further by hot-gluing decorative ribbon around the sides if desired, or tie a bow.

4

Fill your basket with faux grass and fun Easter goodies — that’s it! Happy Easter!

Tips for making Dollar Tree Easter baskets:

  • The theater-size boxes of candy are perfect for this project and so are packages of Easter Peeps marshmallows. If you’d prefer crackers or other savory snack foods, try looking for similar-shaped boxes.
  • If you wanted to use clear packing tape to secure everything, I’m sure that would work as well as hot glue.
  • For the “handle” of the basket, you can use a headband, piece of craft foam, or long rope candy that could work. On one of my baskets, I actually hot glued two beef jerky sticks together and then glued the ends inside the “basket”. So fun!

Homemade Easter baskets are such an easy and adorable craft!

I could see my daughter making some for her friends too! This idea could be a cute small yet thoughtful gift for nieces, nephews, grandkids, etc. The Cracker Jack could be fun for a baseball fan and in addition to boxes of Cracker Jacks, you could add some sunflower seeds, gum, and maybe a baseball.

I think this could go beyond Easter too! Maybe this could be a creative small gift basket idea for other occasions and holidays. How cute would the candy basket be to present a movie gift card? Or possibly a teacher or coach end-of-the-year gift?

Here are two more fun examples I made years ago! I clipped on some little hairbows to the handle as an embellishment on these. What a fun little craft that’s easy to pull off!

Cute idea for the great-nieces and nephews. I’ll need to do this next year as I already sent their Easter goodies out…..with their Valentine’s Day goodies and birthday gifts. Mailed together to safe on postage.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

That is so thoughtful and nice of you!

    • Ann

I’ll try to pick up things for the handles now so I have them for next year. Again, thanks for the idea. They always like what we send in their goody packages.

  6. Kari

Does anybody have ideas for things to put in an Easter basket for pre-teen/teen boys? I have my younger nephews covered, but that age group isn’t as easy.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Candy, lottery scratch off cards, water bottles, playing cards, are some ideas!

    • momof4boys

Swim goggles, wiffle balls, batting gloves, sunglasses, baseball cards, gift cards. Those are some things we do four our boys.

    • Heather

Anything food related! Candy, chips, gatorade, gum, beef jerky, etc. xbox gift cards, waterbottle stickers, etc.

    • Lora

A wallet with some dollar bills inside could be nice for a preteen/teen boy.

    • Mommaof8 (almost 9)

Roll up a T shirt or maybe shape it into a bunny. A beach towel or some swim trunks would be nice. A wallet with some money in it would surely be appreciated. I’ve given my kids a pair of shoes before and they loved that. I basically just gift wrapped the box with a generic, non-specific holiday, festive paper(bought in the after Christmas sales). Then I use a ribbon and glue it t pool the paper as a handle. It’s a simple basket, but it works!

    • Sarah

Small flashlight, pocket tool or key chain.

    • Jessica M

I have done car air freshners and car cleaning supplies (if they are old enough to drive). Also fishing gear…bobbers, fishing line, and lures.

  7. Jill

That’s what I’m doing I love the dollar tree

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Yay! Thanks Jill!

  8. Wndeals

I’ve made these for my three boys for several years (now 12, 12, and 11). I didn’t realize how much they liked them until I didn’t make them one year and they all asked me where they were! Well worth the few dollars and time!!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

That’s so neat! What a fun tradition.

  9. Happy Aunt

As an aunt, I really like that it’s all consumable without an extra basket to store until next year, etc. Kids only need so many baskets, buckets, etc. Totally want to do this!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Aw YES! That is a great point! My kids were super excited about these! Ha!

  10. Pattyd

    Super cute!!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks so much!

  11. LittleBird

Great idea! I’m going to mail one to my son. He’s 26 yo and lives across the state. I just asked him if he still wants me to continue sending him Easter baskets at this age. He said yes!! So this is perfect! 😄

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Ah that’s wonderful! How neat!

    • Ashley

Love that! I’m 35 and my mom asked if I still want Easter baskets or a gift card and I choose the basket every time 🙂 she mails it to FL from MI

  12. Kim

I did this several years ago when we were traveling during Easter and didn’t want to carry around baskets in my luggage. I just brought the candy and a glue gun and assembled them that night in the hotel room!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Wow! Thats impressive!

  13. ahiestand

I love this idea! I’m wondering if those little boxes of Lego would work as well! More pricey, of course, but perhaps good for a birthday gift and to eliminate candy! I was trying to think of other similar-sized boxes to use for my kids who may be sensitive to too much sugar and food dye! 🤪

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Oh nice idea!

  14. Sheila

Sam’s has a huge selection of spring & Easter ribbon. $6

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks for the tip!

  15. Jas

I do this for the teenagers. Candy box on the outside. Popcorn bags in the inside with other movie night candy. They love it. Have to keep the cool aunt title. 😊😊

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

ohhh love that! Yep, cool aunt for sure 🙂 Thanks Jas!

  16. Kim

Oh I’m doing this , so cute

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh thanks Kim! Have fun making yours 🥰

  17. Tia in FL

Hi Lina – sorry to hijack this thread. Can you post a link to the yellow/sunshine gifts post you did a few years back? I tried searching a bunch of terms but nothing is coming up! Thank you!

      • Tia in FL

Yaaas! I was searching using all the wrong key words like yellow friend gifts! Lol Bookmarked! Thank you, thank you!

        • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

haha! Oh sure! That’s a fun idea 🙂

  18. Ihearthip

Great idea. Every year we buy baskets then after Easter try to figure out how to repurpose them or donate them.
