Uber Driver Program

If you own a car and are looking to start earning some extra money when the kids are at school or outside of your regular full-time job hours, consider becoming an Uber driver-partner! Uber gives you the freedom to choose when you drive (drive most days, a few hours a week, or only now and then!), where you drive, and who you pick up – you are entirely in control of your schedule. This flexibility is a must for busy parents!

Keep in mind that to partner with Uber, your vehicle must be 2005 or newer, have 4 or more doors and not be salvaged. Also note that all Uber drivers are required to go through a simple background check for safety (at no cost to you) and to upload a valid drivers license.

Are you a current Uber driver? If so, please share your experience in the comments below!

If you’ve never heard of Uber, it is a transportation app that allows you to connect to drivers on-demand using an app on your phone, get picked up by professional drivers right where you are, and receive a real-time message when your car arrives. Even sweeter, whenever you sign up through this link (this is my referral link), you’ll score a FREE $20 ride credit!

Get a FREE Uber CreditOn a side note, I was in New York City last week filming some soon-to-be-released videos and used Uber several times while I was there. It was actually my first time to get around with Uber and I was so impressed! I literally was picked up by an Uber driver within 5 minutes or less of making my request and every driver was super professional.

Heard great things about both using and driving for this company. One thing to note though…we discovered our insurance would drop us from coverage if we became a driver. Which would be awful if an accident were to happen. So please do check with your insurance company first before you become a driver.

    • Elen

If I understand correctly when you are driving with uber you are covered under their insurance.

      • Jayden's mommy

Not sure about being covered by their insurance. Could be true. But our insurance said they would not cover us at all. We’d be dropped completely if we chose to be a driver. Again, just our experience and wanted to encourage others to check it out first too. 🙂

  2. Pat

Just don’t take any people to the airport. They make you pay a fee for uber drivers I hear.

    • Emily

That depends on the airport. In Pittsburgh, taxis and regular drop offs use the same line. I imagine other, smaller market, airports are the same way.

Heard great things about this company. Both about driving for and this riding. Only thing to know is that we discovered our insurance would drop us if we became a driver. That be awful in case of an accident of course. So please verify with your insurance just case the same is true with your policy. Best of luck.

I learned of Uber in NYC also and then decided to start doing it myself on my free time in Philadelphia, close to home. It’s a great opportunity to earn money and pay down some debt. I’ve also attached my link if anyone want to start driving. Also note that when you start driving through my referral you can earn a $200 bonus.
Sign up with this special link and get up to $200 when you start driving:

If you use my referral code: OP284 you can also get $20 off your first ride.

I worked in auto insurance and, unless you have a business auto policy specifically for this, there is no coverage under a personal auto policy should you be involved in an accident. Your vehicle would be considered a taxi or “for-hire” and personal auto policies exclude using your vehicle for this. I had to deny a lot of claims for this reason.

      • J Murphy

Uber actually does cover with insurance. It’s a policy they put in place last year. My sister drives for them and I’ve researched it to make sure she was going to be covered.

        • Becka

Yes however, if Uner’s insurance does not have enough coverage for any particular accident (think bodily injury, repairing a very expensive vehicle, etc), a driver would look to their personal policy for additional coverage, in which case, you would be denied.

One would also need to see if your own personal vehicle would be covered under Uber’s insurance. If not, the owner would be responsible for their own damages to their own vehicle if an at fault accident or of the arguably driver doesn’t have adequate insurance or any insurance. Personal policy would deny, coming out of the owner’s pocket.

If your insurance finds out your vehicle is being used for hire, regardless if Uber provides coverage, the driver would be breaching their contract and there is a high chance the insurance company would cancel and terminate the policy.

          • Becka

At fault driver, not arguably…. Auto correct drama….

My husband and I used uber few times in nyc too…always came back with a pleasant experience. The drivers each shared their stories and it was so nice to ride with people who wear suits and are so professional and down to earth. They talk about themselves only if you ask or show interest Else don’t bother us unlike some cab drivers. Very nice information about the insurance and all. Thanks

  7. Ami

I registered to be a driver and before I could get started, they became involved in some sort of legal mess where drivers were banned from the airport. In my area, it seems like the only folks that use Uber are business people for airport rides and drunk partygoers downtown. There was also a story on TV about drivers with thousands of dollars in unpaid airport fines in a neighboring county in which the drivers were waiting for Uber to pay on their behalf all while the fines were pending under the drivers name and license. In my area, it’s not buyer beware, it’s driver beware.

    • Sandy

Yes. That’s because there are a number of allotted taxi medallions sold and/or allowed to service ONLY most major airports. Medallions are very very expensive. I’m sure the owners of those taxi medallions are putting up one heck of a fight to keep Uber drivers off their turf.

I have used several Ubers in Ohio ,tennessee and Chicago. Always a great experience. They always have codes for new people, so if you have a group who has never used their service, you can get a free ride. In select cities theres Lyft.

I’d love it if someone signed up using my Uber promo code, you get $20 off your first ride, promo code siobhant18

Used Uber for the first time while in Atlanta last week. What a great experience we had each time. Never waited more than 3 minutes, and it wasn’t even really a wait because we were a group just trying to get anywhere together, which translated into a wait for the driver, not us.
I love that the tip was included and no one had to worry about who was paying and with what card or cash. It was just really nice. I’d love to get to use it again!
Didn’t realize the insurance issues though. Makes me a little nervous in case something were to happen as a passenger…

My husband is an Uber driver. If you want to become a driver too we’d love if you signed up using his referral code! You can earn a $200 bonus & he’ll get a bonus too! Win-win:) d5tqbjz1ue

    Thank you so much!

I just wanted to say that as a customer, Uber rocks! I rotate between Philly, NYC, Baltimore, DC, and Chicago for my business and will ONLY take Uber. It’s a much more pleasant experience than a taxi (vehicle and driver), I only need my phone with the Uber app on it to request a ride and pay for it, and there’s no tipping. I know a lot of folks who feel the same, so I’d say if you are thinking of being an Uber driver, go for it. I think you’ll find you’ll make good money. If you can drive during busy times, Uber charges a “surge” rate that can be 2-3x normal so that’s even more money! Those times are usually the typical morning and afternoon commutes. However, I’ve even requested an Uber at 11AM and had to pay a surge rate; it just depends on the amount of drivers on the road at the time vs the demand. Plus because you set your own schedule, you could avoid those “drunken” passengers on weekends. 🙂

      • Maria

Thanks Sara! I signed up with your link for my husband this morning and already got the uber Invite email steps on how to become uber driver. I just have to give them my driver license number and my Info and my email also had details on how to get the bonus! Thanks so much

My mom is an uber driver and loves it. She loves the fact that she can work whenever she wants since she travels a lot! Sign up to drive with her code MA484 and receive $200 credit or you can use her code MA484 to receive $20 off your first uber ride.

I will say that every city is different and everyone has their own experiences. She loves pick ups at our airport and there are no fees. Maybe in a much larger city but not where we live. Also uber does cover any fees if there is an accident or if you were to ever receive a citation while driving for them. Please do your homework to decide if this is right for you. I am a flight attendant and I have several friends who are flight attendants who drive that love the extra money and flexibility since you can work when you want.

    • Champayne

Can you drive while on reserve waiting for a flight or do you have to stay in the crew room the whole time???

  15. amayaa82

Just a word of caution. In some states the transportation industry is heavily regulated above and beyond for the safety of all passengers. For instance in the state of Nebraska anyone involved in the transportation industry has to get an additional license plate called a ‘PSC’ (Public Service Commission) plate with a unique ID# on it. If you have this additional plate that means you have been approved by the state of NE to transport passengers – you would have had to show proof of good driving, correct insurances (above & beyond your basic car insurance), etc, etc. When Uber started operating within NE and did not follow any of these rules and regulations they forced the state of NE to start citing those drivers and take additional legal action beyond that. Currently, it’s operate at your own risk for those Uber drivers.

It’s not that there isn’t necessarily a want or a need for them in NE, but more so that every other transportation company within the state is forced to follow the state’s rules and Uber is not an exception.

If you use the code j5crm, you can get a free $20 credit on your first ride. The $20 credit is only good on one ride, so be sure to try to use up as much of the $20 as possible. When I have a ride that’s close by, sometimes I’ll use uber black to take a fancier car to get where I need to go. Also, the code works no matter what city you’re in. Thanks in advance for using my code!

  17. CW

Before you do this check your city/county/state laws. Cities are enacting laws weekly due to insurance issues, background checks (most cities want more correct, thorough ones than Uber does. There’s a huge difference between Level 1 and Level 2 background checks!!)

The code RIDIN30 is good until 1/1/2016 on the first ride up to 30 dollars. I found it online a few months ago and it worked for my husband.

  20. L

Please look into insurance coverage. Most auto policies (I work in insurance) will drop all your autos under your policy if they find you are being paid to use your car to taxi people. I don’t know what type of insurance Uber provides, but for example, if they only have minimal insurance and God forbid you get involved in a multi car wreck or end up with a fatality, they can come after your personal assets.

  21. Sara!

  22. Ashley

    I’ve used Uber a lot! It’s awesome!

I drive for uber in AZ. Its ok if you want extra money and work whenever you want. In AZ they keep cutting the rates. Currently is down to $.90 cents per mile $.17 cents per minute. They take 20% off the fare plus $1.00 if you driver uberx. The fares don’t include tips and uber discourage riders to tip.

If you already used your uber free ride, here is a lyft free ride. Up to $20
Lyft is a company like uber. You download the app and enter the code.

I personally think this is a great idea as a few people I know use this service when hitting the city on the weekend. Hopefully this will bring down drunk driving incidents!
