  It’s highly recommended on a car seat safety blog because it compresses well and is also warm. We used a similar coat from the gap last year and it was great!

  Wait I thought you aren’t supposed to put them in seats with jackets at all. We always layer clothes, so they have a sweater on under and I put their jacket on after they get out of the seat. Is it okay if the jacket is compressed? I’ve only lived in a subfreezing winter region for three (going on four) winters and I’ve always wondered about this.

  You are doing the right thing imo. Very few coats pass the test to be worn under car seat straps. First you put the child in with no jacket on & tighten the straps down until they are safe. Then you take child out ***without loosening*** the straps & put the coat on and try to put child back in the seat **without losening***the straps again, if you are able to do that then it is OK to be worn.

  Or do the reverse : put your child in car seat with coat on & tighten straps. Then keeping straps the same/ Not loosening them take child out & take coat off then put child back in seat- it’s shocking the slack in the straps- that’s how kids can slip out of car seats in a crash.
