Hi, interested in a kindle is this a good version or should I wait for a newer model? What are your thoughts?

    • Tiara

3 of my kids got them yesterday and i must say, I’m a bit jealous!

    • Kim

I got one of these about 4 months ago and I really like it! Everyone in my family had a tablet except me, so this is my first and I’m the only one with a Kindle. My husband and son are actually now wishing they had a Kindle instead of their Galaxy tablets.

  2. CJ

Nicole, this is the newest model. They have better ones that are bigger and have better viewing screens, but this is a good basic/starter one.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks so much for your feedback 🙂

  3. Adrien

Any idea whether this will be on sale for Black Friday? I want to get one for my two year old for Christmas but I fear if I buy it now it’ll be on sale later.

    • Kelly

I heard that these will be priced at $40 on Black Friday. We’ll see…

  4. Tiffany

I have it nicole. I love it. Had it about three weeks. I pre-ordered it with a matching case. Great quality, good price!

    • Adrien

Can you watch Amazon instant video on here?

      • Tiffany

        Yes.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Sweet! So happy to hear that 🙂

  5. Ashly

We bought 6 of these as gifts and I opened one to try it out first. Love it! I bought a Kindle Fire HDX last year for closer to $150-200 and definitely wish I would have held out, these meet my needs as good as the Kindle HDX does. For $50 (or $42 if you’re buying 6) you cannot beat this tablet!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thank so much for your review Ashly!

  6. AJJ

The only thing holding me back from purchasing is the 8gb. I download movies and the 8gb just wouldnt cut it.

    • Tiff

The new ones have an SD card slot to expand memory!!!

    • Adrien

I thought these had a slot for a memory card so you can add more?

      • algal8

They do…you can add a microSD card up to 128GB

    • Valerie H

Yup they do. I bought some for my kids and husband. I was able to purchase sim cards to expand the memory!

      • Laila

Any idea how much the memory stick for these would cost? Just wondering if its worth it. Thanks

        • Jennifer

The price depends on what size SD card you purchase. Naturally, the 128gb cards are going to be more expensive. I was able to get a 64gb class 10 card for my son’s tablet for right around $35 from Costco (you can probably find cheaper ones with a lower class rating or different brand).

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Bummer 🙁

  7. hello

Do these have a spot for a micro sd Card or no? Thank you in advance.

    • algal8

      Per the description on Amazon…
Add a microSD card for up to 128 GB of additional storage.

      • AJJ

        Oh awesome thank you!!

      • hello

        Thank you!

  8. Car

I end up getting 2 kids kindled at $99 each. After doing the math, kindle+ 2 yr protection + case+ unlimited kids books and games= kids kindle was way cheaper than turning over one of the 6 for 5 to my youngest.

    • knovotny

Do you have to pay for the kids games/books when its up?

    • Veronica

Hi Car. We got two of the regular kindles for our kids (just turned 5 and 3) a few years ago. They have held up better than similar products marketed specifically for kids. We got basic cases on sale and haven’t had any issue at all. We didn’t opt for the extended warranty. For $50, you honestly cant beat this and if they can hold up to my rambunctious 2 year old, they are pretty tough indeed. 🙂

Does anyone know whether you can read these at the beach or out in the sunshine? I have the Kindle 3 (keyboard at the bottom) and I’m thinking about upgrading since this is such a great price. I just need to be able to read outside. Thank you for any help anyone can offer.

    • AJJ

I dont think these have the same screen as an ereader. I would stick with an ereader for books.

    • Robin

You would have difficulty reading on this outside.

  10. Sarah

I did the preorder on this, and love it!! I do notice a little lag, but I only use it for games and to read, so it’s not that bad. Worth the cost, and you can add extra memory.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Sweet!

  11. Jill

Thank you! I got 2 for both my kids as their main Christmas gift. 🙂

    • CJ

      For Z and M? 😉

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awesome Jill! YW!

  12. Kim

How does this compare to an IPad?

  13. Melissa

Can this download apps? My oldest has apraxia and we are trying to get the reading with no tears app.

    • Jennifer

You can download any apps that are in the Amazon Appstore. I’m not sure if that specific app is available, but I’m sure you could check before purchasing the tablet.

  14. Jennifer

I bought this for my son (almost 6) and he loves it! I programmed a profile for him that is a kids profile, so he doesn’t have any access to social media, Web, in-app purchasing, etc and can only access the apps that I unlock for him. I really love the fact that this model has the micro SD card slot, as with most kids apps and movies, the device memory gets used up right away.

I chose this over the special kids edition, because I didn’t like the Amazon Freetime platform (it’s a bloated mess, and kids naturally want to download every game and video they try). For this Fire, I purchased the kids case for it ($20) and the Squaretrade warranty, which was under $20 for two years of protection (a must-have with young kids).

    • Adrien

I just took the plunge and got my two year old one. Do these offer some nice free educational apps? My daughter is obsessed with puzzles and matching games.

      • Jen M

Yes! And if you watch H2S, you will see Collin post about free apps 😃

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks so much for your feedback Jennifer 🙂

  15. Justine

Would this work in place of a portable DVD player? I’d download the movies to the SD card but would It be hard to see in the vehicle in the daylight? (For my 1.5yr old twins)
