Bed, Bath & Beyond: Scaling Back Store Coupons?!
If you’re a frequent shopper at Bed, Bath & Beyond, you may be interested in this news – especially with the holidays upon us! As you know, most Bed, Bath & Beyond stores accept expired coupons and you can use one percent-off coupon per item unless otherwise stated…and they even accept competitor coupons!
However, according to this recent Good Housekeeping article, Bed, Bath & Beyond stores may be scaling back their 20% off store coupons due to a recent fall in profit from customers using expired store coupons and waiting for a sale to shop. Also, you may notice that select coupons may now have a scaling discount on the coupon (for example – you must use your 20% off coupon by a certain date and after that the discount will drop to only 10% off).
What are your thoughts on this news? Please share!

Years ago in my area they started the 20%/10%, the 10% is valid beyond the expiration. In my current area, there aren’t any 20/10% coupons, just 20%. It does vary by area.
Thanks for sharing!
I noticed about 6 months ago or so that my coupons started coming with 20% by a certain date and then 10% after that. I don’t mind I usually get another one in the mail for 20% by the time it drops down to the 10%
Their items are quite overpriced. Without the 20% using expired coupons I won’t shop there anymore.
Agreed and I just shop at Meijer, Target or Amazon for the same things anyway. Been 2 plus years since I was at one of their stores.
Agreed. I rarely go there anyway. I find it expensive. I would never buy anything there without a coupon.
I love browsing there, but only use coupons as well. I do get ideas of things to compare prices on while browsing, and their clearance prices are sometimes good.
When I’m running low on my fave k-cups I get them at BB&B when there’s not a low enough price elsewhere.
Same for me too.
Yes overpriced. The last thing I bought there was a squatty potty lol
Exactly! The whole store is overpriced by MORE THAN 20%. I never shop there without my baggie of 20% off and $5 off $15 coupons.
Thanks for your feedback.
This is not a surprise. B&M stores are trying to survive in an downturn economy with aworse downturn coming by late 2016. There is also the online presence. Sears Fitstudio just reduced their weekly points from 5,000 to 2,000 suddenly last week for the same reason.
What?! First I have heard about the fit studio going to $2!
They did this last week without warning. Check your account.
Hmmm… I got 5,000 last Thursday
I got $5 dollars as well last week.
I got $5 last week and just checked now and it is changed. WTH! That’s disappointing, they should raise the miles or something, not reduce all together!
I didn’t know they reduced them either! I got $5 last week, although maybe this week will be different. That’s my favorite part about SYWR!
I don’t have a problem with them not accepting expired coupons. I always felt weird about that. As for waiting for sales, there are never really any sales at their stores. As long as they issue the coupons regularly, I’m okay with the changes.
I don’t really shop there. I agree with CW it is overpriced. I hate that I can’t just drop by and shop… I feel like I HAVE to have a coupon.
Agreed!
My area has been doing the 20 & 10 for a while… never bothered to try to use an expired one, so not sure if that is a change here or not.
Not surprised at all, they are overpriced in my opinion and I only shop there when it’s a good markdown on items.
I’m surprised they are still In business! They trained their own shoppers to live by and rely on coupons.
So true!!
Never thought about it like that, but that’s so true. Last week, I got the coupon flyer AND the sale flyer w/a coupon.
In the past I’ve been able to use a coupon for every item i’m purchasing. However, I went a few weeks ago and they would only let me use three coupons per transaction.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to tell stores to stop accepting expired coupons?
Say it ain’t so!
🙁
I never even knew you could use an expired coupon there. If you think about it.. all coupons have a date on them.. and if you don’t use it by the time that date passes, you shouldn’t be able to. What’s the point of having a date on them if they are still going to take them after they are expired?
They are too overpriced anyway. I wouldnt buy anything there without a coupon. Wonder if this change will just further hurt them by restricting coupon usage because people like me are less likely to even shop there at all, the rare times i actually do.
Most bridal registries seem to be bed bath and beyond, so less coupons is definitely a bummer for me. They are totally overpriced! I wish you could have a registry that wasn’t store specific. THen you can buy it wherever it is the best priced or most convenient for you.
That’s why I LOVE that you can do registries and wish lists on Amazon! Not only are there better prices and options, but it also allows you to add items/links to other websites. And if you are shopping from a registry, there’s a button you can click to let other people know you have purchased it, if you have found it somewhere else.
Most places will mark something as bought if you call and let them know that you bought that item elsewhere. But I agree with a semi generic one, that’s why i love Amazon registries!
I’ve never been a big BB&B shopper because the prices are high until I did my wedding registry there. Their customer service is wonderful. We’ve had several items break in the part few years since our wedding and I’ve never had a problem replacing them. If you look at it as an investment most of their products are of good quality and if you do have a problem you can return the item. I only shop with coupons there and that does help. I even applied coupons to every item from my wedding registry that hadn’t had a coupon applied by the purchaser. It helped a bunch.
Thanks for sharing Michele!
Umm never even knew you could use an expired coupon there. What’s the point of an expiration date?
I agree…I didn’t know they took expired coupons. So this story just means people actually need to follow coupon expiration dates now for their coupons? I think they still offer plenty of coupons, so it seems like a non-issue to me too 😄!
I’ve only shopped there with a stack of coupons or with a gift card. I’d never pay full price to shop. Amazon, Kohl’s, Target, Walmart, Macy’s, etc. beat their prices nearly every time. I hate the design and layout of the store as well.
I agree. The thing that gets me about the store is the overwhelming smell when I enter the door. I can’t stand how strong it is.
I hate the layout too! I thought I was just being weird. Lol
If they lowered their prices or held better weekly/monthly sales they would have more shoppers besides the regular couponers. Hopefully they accept the original expired coupons still, I have enough to last a lifetime! lol
They have high prices. While I am sympathetic to their dip in profits, I worry they will go out of business because of this. Sad!
They’re incredibly overpriced! I only shop there if I have a coupon. 10% off isn’t even worth it IMHO. I’ll just throw my stash of old coupons away and only shop if I get a new coupon. Or, alternatively, I’ll browse in store to find what products I like and then buy them online for cheaper. (I’m particular about bedding since I have such bad insomnia.)
They’re going down! Their prices are too high. Their employees are rude. AND NOW they’re scaling back coupons???
I rarely shop there
Things are never on sale at BB&B. There are clearance items but they are all junk- missing pieces or broken parts. Without the 20% coupons or $5/$15 coupon, it is not worth going into the store. Things are overpriced. It is a fun store to look at new products but I won’t shop there without any coupons.
Yes! I’ve notice items on s are mostly defects
sale
I only shop there if I can use a coupon because their prices are not at all competitive. Most times I can shop elsewhere and get merchandise cheaper. I was not aware that they had sales other than clearance. I think that their pricing and coupon strategy is not inviting to most consumers so it is no surprise that they are not faring well. Restricting coupons most likely will not contribute to them raising their bottom line. It will have the opposite impact.
Their merchandise is WAY overpriced and their service in my area is LOUSY so they can keep their coupons. Once I did a ‘mystery shop’ there and was supposed to carry a large, oversized item through the store to see how long it would take until an employee offered me a cart…out of frustration I finally gave up after chasing all the employees through the store and being ignored. I also had to inquire about items in different departments and that was a nightmare as no one wanted to wait on me. I was finally assisted by an employee. Then when I went into different departments, that same employee was the only one who came to assist me. I felt like a total fool and trust me, I would not do another mystery shop there (or anywhere) nor would I shop there.
I assumed they figured the 20% off coupons into their pricing, or at least some of it. They are always higher priced than all the other stores, so I never buy anything without a 20% off coupon. I save every one and have a stash of them.
Me, too! 😉
Their five dollar coupons are the best! If you do your transaction in multiples of $15 you can use as many five dollar coupons as you want and it’s like getting 30% off and remember you can use the buy buy baby coupons too. It’s great for shampoo conditioner and other bath and body items Also kcups!!
10%is nothing. Tj Max has some of the same stuff for a lot less too.
My grandma goes to our store with multiple 20% off coupons and they always use them all, even if she is only buying one item.
Haven’t shopped there since I got Amazon Prime.
Since I have gone prime, I think target is the only store I frequently shop at.
How’d that work out for Penney’s? . . . Though I actually preferred Penney’s no-coupon experiment.
So true!!!
It was cheaper! And you knew when they were going to mark it down again. I would wait for items to get down to 1-2 dollars! Although now there are a bunch of items that are 90% off and you can use a coupon. Our society has been trained that it’s most likely not a good deal unless you are using a coupon (which mainly holds true, but people couldn’t get over this with Penney’s).
I really don’t like how they have redecorated to try to be more boutique like, especially since this took away all of the price scanners (at least at my locations).
I sooooooooo miss that JCP some of the best deals I ever got were there
Wedding/bridal registries probably keeping them afloat.
They have the best deals I have found on Tervis cups after the coupon. I need to get a few for Christmas and was planning to go there with the coupon. Does anyone know of better prices on those?
with more people buying online and on Amazon, a lot of people don’t even go in store shopping anymore. even with a coupon and a sale, almost all prices can be beat online as their prices are vastly inflated.
I have a ton of OLD coupons that do not say reduced to 10%. Anyone interested?
Hey Tobey, did you get rid of your expired coupons? If not I’d love some! Let me know by replying or email me jcooke@npacc.net.
Hey Tobey, if you have expired BB&B colons yet, I’d love some! Let me know by replying. Thanks!
Lol, coupons!! Coupons! Ha haaaa!
I didn’t know they took expired coupons so this won’t make a difference to me. Seems like I’m having a harder time using coupons everywhere!
These companies and their desire for record profits. Sorry but I won’t be paying full price for anything to make their shareholders richer.
I have found myself going to by BBB more since they have added makeup. I find that these tend to be cheaper than drugstores and on price point with Target, and you can use the 20% off coupons! The clearance at my BBB have been great the past couple of months. I also shopped around and BBB was the cheapest place for the vacuum I wanted.
I lv my BB&B… I have NEVER had a bad experience there .My store is gr8 .They always have employees.. They will also call a different store if my certain item is not there..ie: king bedding ..not queen…They will also order in store for a big item …so no shipping costs… They send enuf coupons….I dont need expired ones … No other businesses offer to do that ..If they can stay open,by doing this…Im all for it …Lets try to keep peoples jobs..!!!
TBH, this reminds me when kohls changed their kohl cash policy, timelines, use it by the exp or lose it. I talked to managers and explained it really changed around my in store purchases & attitude towards kohls. I viewed it as punitive and restricted. If BBB moves to a less member service mindset, I agree with you all, their prices are high, and I won’t be motivated to get in to get the small discount. In addition GH also said they are reviewing return policies. I have many friends/customers say it’s one of the top reasons to go shopping there. Customer service drives purchases…just ask Costco. They beat Best Buy any day, and it’s because their prices are worth the membership, the customer return policy is generous, and they don’t make you make you feel like a criminal for not liking something.
They changed to the 20/10 for us a while ago but still take the expired 20% off ones. I don’t mind but then they shouldn’t be allowed to automatically deduct 20% off when returning without a receipt.
Does everyone know they price match? I don’t find there prices higher on the same products. They do have a better quality and don’t sale “cheap” products. Anything I purchase that should last long, I buy there because of their excellent return policy. I bought a baby monitor 4 years ago and it went out this past year. We returned it, got a new one, and got $60 back because the price had changed since our originally purchase date.
What the WHAT? Oh, noooooooo
Feel like bridal registries are what keep them afloat. Only shop there w coupons for wedding gifts from registry. Never impressed with prices. Online shopping is killing stand alone stores like BB&B.
The BBB’s I’ve been to (in IL and PA) have not taken expired coupons for about five years, now.
The coupons I get in the mail are graduated (20% to 10% etc) for the last few years, but not the ones in magazines.
They need to just have acutal SALES. I don’t shop there much, but I know I’ve never spent more than $10 unless I had a coupon.
Not surprised!!! The store has overpriced bland items. Everything seems cheaply made and generic, but expensive to purchase. Not what you want in a store!!!!
Good thing I still have kajillions of coupons stashed… (Evil laugh)
Items may cost a little more, but in my area, you can’t beat the customer service. These folks know what they are talking about, they know were items are located, they will walk you there, they are ready to offer genuine suggestions, and they will gladly assist you to your car if you have a ton of bulky things…and it’s all done with a smile.
I’ll pay more for great customer service, for employers that treat their workers well, and/or for items made in the USA.
I actually think BBB is in denial. The stores in my Northern Virginia area are way over priced when compared to nearby competition. To even get close price matches a Northern Virginia customer must use the 20% off coupon or overpay. If BBB doesn’t adjust prices locally and just eliminates coupons they will continue fail. It doesn’t matter to me, because everyone else is always cheaper, so I find their coupons a nuisance.
I hope that they do stop accepting expired coupons. Makes no sense to put an expiration date on them and then accept them after that date. It may cost them sales initially, but they will come out ahead. Although they are a little pricey on some items, they generally have a good selection of quality products.
Let’s be real, they’re only open because of wedding registries. They are WAY overpriced. And I too had never even heard they take expired coupons. Not in South FL at least.
I’m in South FL (WPB). They’ve taken expired coupons for at least 14 years. Prior to me making a wedding registry. lol
