DIY Felt Toddler Christmas Tree

Inspired by SheKnows.com

Supplies:

  • large piece of green felt (mine measures 40 inches high x 35 inches wide)
  • removable double sided mounting tape (like this Duck brand or these Scotch Removable Mounting Squares)
  • scissors
  • piece of chalk
  • small pieces of colored felt for ornaments
  • cookie cutters to trace shapes (optional)
  • puffy paint (optional)

How to Make a Felt Toddler Christmas Tree

Instructions:

  1. Fold the piece of green felt in half.
  2. Use a piece of chalk to draw a Christmas tree shape.
  3. Using your sharpest scissors, cut out the tree. Secure to the wall using double sided mounting tape.
  4. Cut shapes from various colors of felt for ornaments.
  5. You can get as creative as you want or keep things super simple –> make your own cardboard template for ornaments or use cookie cutters.
  6. I used some non toxic puffy paint to embellish further, but that is totally optional.
  7. Then let the kiddos have fun decorating their tree. Since felt sticks to felt, all they have to do is place the ornaments on the tree!

we did this a couple of weeks ago and he played for a while and then ripped it off the wall haha. he still plays with the ornaments though 🙂

Yeah, that keeps happening to ours, too. So far it sticks back up there, but that may not last. It’s definitely a cute idea, though.

      • Jenninr

        Yes

    • Retta

oooh, thanks for the tip! It’s so difficult for me to cut felt. It always looks terrible! I’ll gladly pay $3 to not have the frustration!!

OMG! I created this for my kids (2 1/2 and 1 yr) this year since the youngest is always putting things inside his mouth. I also stuffed it with pillow foam. It turned out better than expected! I highly recommend specially to include your little ones.

      Oh how fun!

I made this for my stepdaughter when she was 3. Last year (6 years old) she asked to put it in her room. She didn’t decorate it repeatedly, but loved having “her own tree.” She put it in her room again this past weekend 🙂

Where do you get a piece of felt that big?

    • Jen

Joanns has it. You have to buy it by the yard.

My daughter has a kidney disease and spent time in the hospital this year. We bought supplies and are going to try to make a few of these for children who will be spending this Christmas in the hospital!! Love the tutorial!!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

What a great idea – Merry Christmas Emily!

You can also hot glue magnets to the back of the tree and hang it on a steel front door (if you don’t want to attach to a wall)!

I like the idea of using cookie cutters for fun shapes!

Our target had premade ones for $3 in the spot bins. Way cheaper than doing it yourself! Lol of course I leaned this the day after I made one

This makes me want to do ones for year round, likes a castle or giant landscape with animals and people

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

That is such a cool idea!!
