If you’re a frequent Macy’s shopper, you may be interested to know that Macy’s will be closing 36 of their stores nationwide and eliminating 4,500 positions due to a disappointing holiday season. With that being said, if you live in one of the 36 affected cities, you may want to make plans to visit your local Macy’s soon as I’m sure they’ll be offering up various clearance deals throughout the closing process!

I currently work at Macy’s in Michigan. I love Macy’s. I do not like the clientele of the location where I work. Thieves, wear items then return them the next day and they’re disrespectful.
Yes, Macy’s needs an interior makeover, but the staff are hardworking people that put up with a lot of sh*t. I highly doubt any of critics could stand a four hour shift.

Non of the 4 store close by me are closing, but I was shopping with my mom at one of the stores today and couldn’t wait to get out of there. Very unorganized, you can never find anyone to help you with anything and there seems to be just too much merchandise for the size of their stores.

It’s too hard to shop in their shoe department. You have to go on a wild-goose chase to find an associate to send to the “back room” to get your shoes. Learn from DSW. People just want to find their size and try it on. No one has time for a sales associate to run back and forth.

seems like the Macy’s brand has been trying to be too many things – high end, affordable, discount – just doesn’t work… they need to choose a target customer and focus their energies on that – our local stores want to sell high-end merchandise in dressing rooms with disgusting stained carpet, dust piled up on every surface, and outdated flickering lighting – how can they possibly expect someone with the resources to spend big to want to shop in that kind of environment?
sorry for those who will lose their jobs – hope they land on their feet

I used to be an avid Macy’s shopper. However, I agree with many of the people I have seen posting about the declining customer service as well as well as the increased difficulty in using coupons. On Black Friday I had purchased several items. And my coupon was declined. I asked which item or items were causing the problem as I was quite sure all the items should have been ok. They could not tell me. About a week later I ordered a $150 online order to pick up in the same store…they cancelled my order but didn’t tell me. I called customer service and was transferred several times. I asked why my order was cancelled and they said they couldn’t tell me because they had to protect their customer. I reminded them I was their customer and they gave me a $25 credit but still didn’t tell me what the problem was. This makes no sense and is obviously going to affect their sales πŸ˜•

We have two Macy’s near us and I have never shopped at either one of them. Not starting now!

  7. Jenn

Good. Close them all. I ordered online and did pick up in store. Had a GC to use but couldn’t get free shipping. I waited over an Hr at the designated area bc the employees kept helping in store shoppers checking out but didn’t know what to do. When I have a 3yr old and 1 yr old I just want to run, get my stuff and leave. Not try to keep 2 very active toddlers occupied and keep them from running off for an hr. Best Buy has the in store pick figured out. Maybe Macy’s needs to take a few pointers from them.

Stopped shopping there when Macy’s chose political correctness over their customer base. Going by hundreds of responses on their FB page many people refused to shop in Macy’s stores for Christmas. Hence “disapointed holiday season”. People voted with their wallets.

      It was the “weather.” Lol

The department stores are dying on the vine. Unfortunately for the poor employees that will lose their jobs, the Macy’s upper management has been living in a fantasy land by keeping this out-of-date concept on life support. High prices, same low quality products you can buy elsewhere at a fraction of the price, inconvenient locations, marginal customer service, fake/pretend sale ads (complete with coupons that are basically unusable, or won’t be honored even if usable), and a store layout/organization that is like a bad scavenger hunt… and should we be surprised there is a problem???? Oh, let’s blame the weather— if it weren’t so sad for the employees impacted, it would be funny! At least (for now) they do a nice parade.

Wow your words are harsh. I work in the industry I sell apparel to dept stores and guess what its not the dept stores that are going out its the small mom and pop stores and boutiques. Before we lay blame let’s really look at the whole picture. There are numerous factors to take into account. I don’t understand what you mean by management living in a fantasy land by keeping dept store business as a concept? A dept store is there to offer all types of products that’s why people shop in a store like that. It sounds like you have no interest in a dept store layout so I assume you shop in a boutique and there is nothing wrong with that. I shop at Macy’s Herald square and the store is beautiful it has recently been re-modeled. Macy’s carries high end product as well as regular affordable products and at the end the season literally gives away product with specials and coupons and yes you have to READ the writing on the back of the coupon because it excludes certain sale items like Door busters, deals of the day, certain designers. Also just so that you know the high end designer labels that it carries for example a Burburry or Gucci lease space in the store so the discounts and specials don’t apply there. I think the biggest problem with Macy’s is organization of goods in the store and employees that are not trained well to deal with the fast paced environment that Macy’s has. YOu need to train your staff well because every sale matters. That person that you let walk out of the store because your talking to another employee and don’t notice who is around you affects the bottom line which is sales. Who knows what the answer will be for Macy’s but I’ll tell you this its better to close down the non-profitable stores and concentrate on your earners.

I agree with a lot of readers. You can’t use coupons on anything I want to buy!!! Not on makeups or designer bags ugh :(((

    • Paola

Make-up and designer bags are leased space. That is why you cannot use the coupons.

  11. Jessi

    I love my Macy’s – the coupons r great – I’ve had good experiences.

My parents’ closest store in OR was closing before Christmas so we got a ton of automatically discounted Christmas gifts! It was nice to shop and spoil my family on a budget!

  13. Ann

Shocked that they’re not closing the Kentucky one near me. Coming from Southern California this is the worst Macy’s I’ve ever seen, and considering that I used to travel for work, that’s saying something.

The Irvine one just was in a bad area with too many better Macy’s close to it.

But I agree with what some people are saying. They’ve never gotten their website to keep up with the times of how to attract and retain the online customer and they’ve gotten messy and more disorganized over the years. I used to work for them too. πŸ‘ŽπŸ½ never again.

I love Macy’s but their sales are jokes. They increase prices when there are coupons out…. I seriously had an item bookmarked for my wife, with the price written down in my notepad (for budgeting gifts) and then when there were coupons and sales coming out, I decided to go back on the website and take a look…. lol, they raised the price so that when you used the coupon it was the same price….

And not only that, but in-store their items are usually even more expensive…

I still shop at my local Macy’s. I love it, and when I can’t find the same product at Bergner’s for less then I’ll usually just buy it from Macy’s. But it’s not a surprise they’re doing poorly. I usually can find the same thing for way less elsewhere.

The closest one closing is an hour or so away… I really may be going, just to see if I can’t find something. I feel terrible for the employees, though. It isn’t their fault. Back when I worked retail, I hated every waking minute of it. Customers are real jerks, and you get the backlash not only from them but from your managers. And for a lot of my older co-workers, that was the only job they could get….

I feel terrible that a lot of people will be out of work at all, especially right after Christmas.

I just found out yesterday about my local Macys closing in Columbia, MO. I found it very sad news. I had worked there for 2 1/2 years and had a great group of co workers and managers. Unfortunantly I knew they were on there way to closing down last April when i went to work for my local Kohls. When they were making alot of changes and sere not able to give anyone significant hours. I worked in a commissioned department where i was lucky to have 1 or 2 sales a day from my dept. I can agree with the coupons at Macys vs Kohls. I have found some amazing deals at kohls with very little coupon restrictions as well as you can stack coupons there.

  16. Kay

I do not shop at Macys often and 3 in my area are closing. I noticed this year while looking through the Sunday paper the thick and expensive to print sales ads. They are a bit overwhelming. Hopefully corporate can cut costs and save the remaining locations.

  17. Jeannie

I quit shopping there much because I would spend so much time picking out items to use with a coupon offer only to get to the register to be told those items were ineligible. So frustrating!

I have had a horrible experience shopping online at Macy’s. Two months ago, I ordered a Christmas dress for my granddaughter. Three times they sent me the wrong item. Every time they promised they would get it right. They charged me for it twice, only refunded the amount once (minus the shipping) and now they say that they don’t have the item that I mailed back to them over two weeks ago. Hence, they will not refund me the original purchase price plus shipping. To be clear, they want me to pay 35 dollars for an item that I NEVER received. I have since purchased the dress at another department store and intend to never shop at Macy’s again. However, I do feel for the individuals that will potentially lose their jobs working for this company.

I shop at Macys quite often. But lately it has really changed. The Montgomery Mall store is in a really huge fashionable Mall that Macy used to be a very elegant Macy.
I was there last Saturday January 2. OMG. The store was in such a disaray. We were looking to buy a coat. All the coats were marked down. But all the names from Michael Kors. Calvin Klein. 32 Degrees all were together. So the prices was very confusing. No one to help you. Half of the registers were not working. There were long lines every where.
Most of the Cashiers was Christmas help. I spoke with a few managers. They were so rude and looked so overwhelmed.

However I wrote a letter. The store manager at that store responded immediately. That was very nice. He was very professional. Kind
He helped me find d my coat
I’m so thankful to the manager at Montgomery Mall Macys. He was very kind. I’m thankful to him.
