I bought the a Fire Kids Edition for each of my 6-year-old twin granddaughters for Christmas and I couldn’t be more pleased. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made as far as value. The girls can easily navigate the tablets to listen to music, watch videos, play games, take pictures and videos and more! The variety of free content available to download is unbelievable!

  2. KBG

Just an FYI…..we purchased 2 of these last Christmas and although they are great, the storage space is HORRIBLE!! What Amazon fails to tell you is that approximately 4GB out of the 8GB is filled up by their apps and info, which cannot be deleted. Therefore, this leaves only leaves 4GB for the applications that your kids want to download. This has caused me hours of headaches trying to delete apps, books, etc in order to get new ones downloaded on the kindle. I have also spent hours working with customer service, in which I have been told there isn’t much they can do, except help me reset the device to factory settings.

Make sure you purchase a Fire that has a the ability to add extra storage space (last years model doesn’t have this option). I can only fit approximately 2-4 apps on the ones we have without getting a message that we are out of space. Super Frustrating!!

On a positive note, we love the Amazon Free Time and would be happy with the kindle if it really was 8GB for the customer to utilize.

Finally, one other bit of information is if you send your kindle back for a warranty issue, they do not send you a new one but a refurbished one. This may be important to some parents.

Currently having this exact issue! Even with the sd card, half of that space is taken by “other” which apparently means their software for the kindle. Our was having tons of issues, apps disappearing then having to re download them, it would freeze, etc. Our replacement is on its way, and like you said, it’s refurbished. They didn’t tell it would be refurbished but I noticed it in the confirmation email I received about the warranty replacement. Ugh!!

I completely agree. I bought these for my kids and they barely hold anything. It’s very misleading to say that these products have 8 GB storage space.

      • Em

Same here!! We have them for my three kids and had to order 32gb SD cards for each one. Still gets full quick. The kids love them but constantly need help when they get full. A HUGE hassle for a parent!!

  3. Krissy

We purchased these for our 9 and 5 year old for Christmas. My kids love them. I do agree that the apps. fill up space fast but we purchased 32 GB memory cards when Amazon had it them on sale for $12 last week. This should take them quite a while to fill up that space LOL! For a family on a tight budget, definitley worth the price in my opinion!

  4. Jill

Agreed the storage is terrible…easy to navigate but I honestly would never recommend as a tablet for kids…it’s made for books not large apps like Disney jr, pbs, Netflix, etc. my son can only have 4 additional apps if we keep Disney jr and Netflix on his.

    • Jill

But mine did not have a spot for a SIM card? If it did all problems would be solved!

  5. Jill

Since these were out of stock before Christmas and I wouldn’t have gotten them in time, i bought a different tablet. They were horrible! After 4 days they froze and I’m still trying to get the company to take them back. I then bought these kindles and they are SO much better. My kids love them and we haven’t had any problems with storage space yet but we’ve only been using the apps that are provided. I’m glad we got these!

I purchased this for my 5 year old for Christmas and it was a nightmare. It froze constantly. Asked for a replacement and they wiped her info off the first one. Took a week for the replacement to arrive. Customer service in the Kindle department was horrible. I returned both and got her a Samsung Galaxy Tab instead. It was $100 but it was worth it. No problems now! Just wanted to share my experience. You get what you pay for sometimes 🙁

    • jenna

I bought mine the Samsung Galaxy tab as well and she loves it!

  7. Cherianne

Oh man. If I bought this my toddler wouldn’t stop begging for the tablet and would want to play it all day. Great deal, but I will need to pass!!!

I also bought these as gifts for my almost 4 & almost 6 yr old. They love them! I was nervous because they kept asking for an iPad but I could not afford 2 iPads so this was a perfect substitution! I also purchased a 32GB SD card and have had no storage problems. My kids love the Free Time with unlimited apps and books. Something tells me we will be paying for a subscription at the end of the yr. My favorite part is the parent controls! I did not want my kids glued to these things 24/7. I have ripped my iPad out of their hands plenty of times, but this is so much easier to set a time limit. By some magic power they hand the thing over when it says that’s all the time for today! I was a little surprised that my youngest figured out that when her time was up she could switch users to her sisters account and use up her time while she was at school haha kids are so smart!

I bought the regular version of this on black Friday for $35 for my 5 year old, and we’re very pleased. No problems so far, and we have a ton of apps on it (haven’t bothered with an sd yet). Maybe the newer generation is better?

    • ashley

After reading these comments I’m thinking it was wise to stay away from the kids version.

  9. Jennifer

I was worried about the storage on the kids version, because a lot of the reviews said that amazon Freetime was a bloated mess. I ended up buying the Kindle fire for $49.99, added the kids case for $19.99 (the exact one on the kids version), and purchased a 2 year Squaretrade warranty for $14.99. Same tablet, more storage, and even cheaper (about $85 total). Plus the Kindle fire has awesome parental controls! I love it, my son loves it!

    • Kathy

      Thanks Jennifer.

I don’t like this one at all. Storage is bad but even worse it is soooo slow. It takes for ever to load apps and movies. We are going to try and return ours. Just a big disappointment.

  11. Bethany

I bought two of the $50 one on Black Friday for Christmas gifts for my 5 and 8 year olds. They love them and we have had zero problems. They haven’t run out of storage space yet but we will be purchasing memory cards soon to give them more space (you can find these quite cheap). I think they are a wonderful value for the cost. I also purchased very nice cases on ebay for less than $10 each.

  12. Mich

I have to comment after reading so many negative reviews. I wish I had started my kids in the kindle fire, instead of the iPad.
My 5-yr-old “stole” my iPad at age 2. I decided to buy the kindle fire for his little brother because I couldn’t justify a second iPad. I added Freetime Unlimited because I want my 5-yr-old surrounded by as many books as possible. I was impressed with the library of apps, videos, and games. My 3-yr-old loves watching Daniel Tiger.

The parent controls are a breath of fresh air, after having to deal with the iPad for 5yrs. No matter what I tried, I would still find “mature” content on his iPad. The BEST part is I can “pick” books or apps I want him to read (like a Star Wars reader, or a Sandra Boynton “read to me” book I know he’ll love), and it will automatically show up as the first thing on his home screen when he plays. I catch both boys “reading” instead of just playing games. I’m having WAY more influence over the content. It’s like I get to “suggest” good books even when I’m not there. As a working mom, I absolutely love that part! I can even check to see how much time was spent reading and playing games.
I don’t have storage issues yet (one month), but I plan to buy a storage card when I do.
