Mattress Deals

Check out the reader emails I’ve recently received…

I am in dire need of a new mattress. I have no idea what brands, types or quality are best. What companies  have warranties or good customer service?

I’m in need of a new mattress and after seeing your post about the top things to buy in February post, it made me think… when are the best deals for mattresses? Have you ever shared anything about mattresses and perhaps the best places to buy a mattress?

With that being said, have you scored any great mattress deals lately? Or do you have a favorite brand or company that offers a good warranty and customer service? Please share!

Parklane! Made in house, so you are guaranteed quality. They are located in the NW. We’ve had ours for several yrs now, rotate mattress every 6mo. Still feels like the first day I bought it. Plus, they carry bamboo and aloe mattress options for sensitivity and allergies:) Anyone heard of them?

If you don’t want to worry about the long term side effects of off-gassing, look into chemical free wool mattresses. In Seattle there’s a place called Sacred Heart; I’m sure if you google you’ll find a healthy mattress choice in your state.

If you have a mancini’s, they are great! My fiancé and I went mattress shopping a few years ago and went to EVERY store (sleep train, Ashley’s, mattress discounts, random furniture stores, etc) and mancini’s was the only one who didn’t feel like they were only trying to make a sale. I have helped many family members purchase mattresses and went to many mancini’s and always got great customer service and a great price. They are super informative and don’t pressure you at all and try to work with your budget. I haven’t tried Costco before so I can’t say for them. We enjoy the iserta memory foam series!

Also my go to salesperson said the best time to get a mattress is May.

After a lot of research, I became a fan of natural latex mattresses. I feel like for a piece of furniture you will be sleeping on for 8 hours a day, you really need something that is healthy. Latex gives off less chemical fumes. It does sleep hot though. It is much more natural than memory foam.

Costco hands down. We got one of those foam mattresses that come in a super tiny box and it was around $500-600 after coupon, king size. Had it for 7 years almost and I can’t wait to come home to it after going on a trip.

  6. tiffany

Buy the showroom floor model. 🙂 it’s only been sat on.

  7. Ally

Go to themattressunderground.com I just bought a wholesale, king sized latex mattress for $2000. Has a 30 year warranty, so I think I’m going to be saving a pretty penny over the long run.

  8. Emily

We ordered a memory foam from Amazon and we love it. 20 year warranty and I think we paid around $500 for a kong size so it was a great deal with tons of great reviews! Probably the only way I will buy mattresses now!

Ashley’s is the worst. I bought A couch from them, it was scheduled to be delivered yesterday. We received two confirmation phone calls the two days before. On the day of the delivery I changed my work schedule around and my husband took the day off to make sure we were home. They were supposed to call 45 min before the delivery and the deliveries scheduled for that day ended at 5pm. I called at noon to see what time they would be there and noone could give me an answer. Then after not hearing anything all day I called at 4:15 pm and they tell me I was not scheduled to have a delivery, soon after they told me that my couch was broken on the truck and that they would re-order a new one but it could take up to two months for it to be delivered. The representative I spoke with said that she would give me a call with an update and the new scheduled delivery date however I have still not heard anything back from them. Go to Furniture Row, I have always had a good experience with them.

I had thought about doing business with Ashley Furniture back when they were offering great groupon deals for our area but after reading all,the negative reviews about delivery, quality, customer service, etc. I was like no thank u!!!

    • Linda

I purchased 3 beds from Ashley four years ago when we moved into our new home. Same bed. I hate them. Comfortable in the store. Horrible to sleep on,

I bought a Temperpedic queen size bed almost 4yrs ago. It was top of the line and I paid $4000 for it. I have some medical issues where it became a necessity. Hands down has changed my life in so many ways. I would do it all over again. My girls and I hang out in my bedroom a lot b/c we enjoy the comfort so much.

I’m in the process of choosing a twin xl mattress on amazon. Any thoughts on the best type to put on a platform bed? Ive found several for 100.00 but not sure how good they will be on a platform.

  13. Mary

Costco (in store is a lot less expensive then online). I have also heard a couple people be happy with mattress purchases from Amazon! What can’t you buy there??

  14. Rachel

We are considering a sleep number bed, but I heard that the “pump” to inflate and deflate makes a lot of noise. I’m a very light sleeper and I would hate to wake up every time it inflates or when my husband adjusts his side. Anyone had this experience?

    • JW

We’ve had a sleep number for almost 18 years. (The same bed!)The only time you hear the pump is when you adjust it and It won’t change itself. It is not that loud to me, but may seem that way to others. I doubt your husband will adjust during the night. Once we find our number, we rarely change it. (If I’ve done something to aggravate my back, I might adjust to a higher number when I go to bed.)
This bed has been great! No longer do I wake up with a sore back or achy hips. I LOVE my Sleep Number Bed! Like sleeping on a cloud! Many of our friends have them now, too. It has been the best investment in furniture we ever made! Yes, they cost more, but last a long time!

      • Angela

Completely agree. Would only buy a Sleep Number. They stand behind their product and have excellent customer service.

      • JO

We have also had our sleep number bed for 18 yrs. Love it. We bought the showroom model and they ordered a brand new cover for it when we bought it. We rarely adjust the pump so having it wake you is not an issue. There is nothing wrong with our mattress after all this time and I see it lasting many more yrs. Worth every penny.

ugh… buying a mattress is hard, kind of like buying a car. Whatever you end up with, I highly recommend buying the protective pad with warranty. Yes they are over-priced, but well worth it in my opinion. We have a king mattress with the protective pad. My son had an accident in it, and it went through. At this point the mattress was 2 years old. They paid to have someone come out and clean it. Cleaning it still left a stain. They replaced it with a brand new mattress. Although they did not have the same model, they gave us a credit of our original price paid toward another model. So we are sold on the protectors!!! If you get one, be sure and follow the washing instructions, or you do void the warranty.

I just purchased a Leesa mattress online. It’s a foam mattress and is shipped straight to your home. They have a 100 day trial period, and if you don’t like it, they have someone come out and pick up the mattress for you. Couldn’t be easier. It is sooo comfortable and sleeps cool. I used to wake up with lower back pain, but not since I got my Leesa. Right now they are having a President’s Day sale with $75 off a mattress and a $25 Target gift card.

IKEA has great mattresses at a low price – they even come vacuum sealed and rolled so that you can easily transport into the car and house. They come with a 90 day trial period (during which you can bring back and exchange for credit towards another mattress) and a 25 year limited warranty. Prices range from as low as $89 (twin) to $699+.

    A couple I’ve tried:
$299 – Foam Mattress in Queen Size http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00272208/
$249 – Spring Mattress in Queen Size http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80307416/

A mattress is something that is definitely a personal preference purchase. Buy a mattress is based on doing your research first, then don’t forget the ultra important step of actually experiencing how it feels to lay on it in a brick and mortar store. A mattress could have the best ratings but be to hard or to soft for your personal preference and it’s not a disposable purchase. You’ll be sleeping on it for a long time, make sure it actually feels like something you want to sleep on.

We just bought from Sleepy’s as they warranted my daughter’s mattress after I heard it squeaking after a few months. So we just bought a queen mattress with the adjustable base. We have a full 10 year warranty on the base and the mattress (not pro rated) so if it sags at 9.5 years, they will give us a new mattress. I googled coupons ahead and had free delivery and 10% off so the salesperson at the store worked all of that in. Highly recommend!!! My morning pain is gone since buying it. They had all different styles of the same mattress as in plush, medium, firm or luxury firm.

If you are in or near Houston, try Houston mattress factory. (http://houstonmattress.com/) they are a dumpy building and once you get there you will ask yourself why?, but it is a family run business for decades and makes all their own latex foam mattresses. (might do others too) We knew we wanted latex foam because it is not hot and will sleep for 30 years. They will build to order with the firmness you desire. They also take back to fix it at any point if you are unhappy with it (even 10 years later–according to him). He did bring me in after they built it to make sure I liked it before purchase–so no final sale for custom order. We had shopped around at every option we could find. (lots in big Houston) We ended up buying a queen mattress and foundation for $1500 three years ago. That is at least half of what the same thing would have cost in any other store. And less than the average good quality innerspring mattress and boxsprings! What a bargain!

Some great online information at sleeplikethedead.com don’t waste your money buying consumer reports they had very little information online about mattresses and it costs $7 . Just bought a Serra perfect sleeper extra firm from Sears last night. Big sale and free delivery. (Didn’t buy the rediculous $70 protector either) After some good advice “you cant make your mattress firmer but you can always make it softer with a pillow top”

  23. andrea

I bought a mattress last year and I was on a very tight budget. I shopped many stores and brands before finding the right one. I got it from a nice furniture store where I live, back in their clearance room. A lot of stores have a specific section for their closeout items and you can find some good deals.

  24. Jordan

We got ours from Sams club!

  25. lisa

tuft and needle online– great price- comfy mattress

  26. Tosha

Just purchased from overstock. Fast shipping and nice mattress for my teen son.

  27. jennifer

Do not buy your mattress at Sam’s club! They look pretty good on the front end but after 3 years they are crappy.Mine was a Serta perfect sleeper pillow top and that is the understatement of the year. I have a friend who purchased the exact same mattress. She was complaining about her mattress and I asked her where she got it and sure enough it was Sam’s too, exact same mattress, less than 3 years old. For some reason they begin to sag where ever you sleep the most no matter if you are skinny or fat. We rotate ours every 6 months and this still happened.

    • Jess

Agreed, buying mattress from SAMs was a total waste of money.

  28. Casey

We just bought a mattress from Brooklynn Bedding a few weeks ago and we LOVE it! They have great customer service and give you a 120 trial period. If you decide you don’t like it for any reason in the 120 days they give you a full refund and donate the mattress to a charity. It is a foam mattress and is so comfortable, we don’t wake up with stiff backs and necks anymore. I was worried about it getting too hot, but we have not had any problems with that. There is also a 10 year warranty on it. If you go through this link you can get $50 off your mattress, and when I went through checkout there was an option to share your purchase on Facebook and they would send you a free latex pillow as well. http://mbsy.co/brooklynbedding/20783223

We bought a floor model Tempur-Pedic six years ago and it is our BFF. I think we paid $1400 for a queen and it is not the cheapest one they make. We bought it because we found that floor model. We love it so much. My DH had back problems before, and this really helped solve them. He doesn’t sleep well anywhere else.

    • JES

Two years ago, we were able to find “last years model” tempurpedic on sale for $1100. It was expensive but worth every penny. We could have done 12 months, no interest, but luckily our tax refund came in just in time.

I needed a new mattress last year. It is an overwhelming purchase. My last mattress didn’t really last, and I paid a lot of money for it, so I didn’t want to make that mistake again. I did a lot of research and decided on a natural latex mattress with springs. I found a web site called http://www.oldbedguy.com and he has tons of information on buying a mattress. He will even let you complete a form and give you suggestions. Unfortunately, he fell last fall and is still healing and can’t get to all of them. Such a sweet man, I hope he is well soon. Go on his website, he can at least give you information. He suggested I get a Charles P Rogers mattress, made in NJ (where I live) and I I love it.

Do not buy a sleep number. It will break and there is no true warranty. They charge you for parts. It breaks quickly. It’s a glorified air mattress. Do not waste your money. Don’t buy from Room place either, terrible customer service.

  32. Vincent

Anyone buy their mattress from Saatva? Wife and I are considering buying from here but would like some feedback before buying. Thanks!

  33. Sandra

Every time we stay at a Hyatt or Hilton we sleep like rocks and as it turns out – you can buy their beds. Anyone have experience with Hyatt at Home or Hilton to Home? Their bedding is crazy expensive but the beds are pretty average as far as price goes. From what I’ve read May (around Memorial Day) is when the previous year’s models are drastically reduced.
