Women's Splurges

Check out this email I received from a reader…

I’m ALWAYS on the hunt for great deals. Deals on our weekly grocery needs, wardrobe needs, and of course for the always-upcoming holidays and birthdays. I am always checking Hip2Save for many of these things and often find myself thinking, “this would be great for ____”. That blank is very rarely filled with “me”.

It’s so easy for us to give and do for those we care for, but how often are we returning the favor to ourselves? More so, how often do we feel badly when we do something for ourselves? I tend to second guess my “selfish” purchases almost every time, even if it’s something I need, like a new pair of black dress shoes for work. Why do we do that to ourselves? After all, I think anyone would agree that “mommy” is worthy of a $20 splurge on a cute jacket or whatever it may be.

I have to remind myself to STOP second guessing those purchases. All of the bills are paid and everyone has what they need. My question to those who often feel the same way is: When you’re feeling the weight of everyone else’s needs, how do you remember to return the favor to yourself every once in a while?

With that being said…how do YOU treat yourself?

Turning 40 in a few weeks! It has been a rough year and was just going to let it pass without much celebration. But I realized it was time to finally think of myself for once! I found a great deal on airfare and my family of 4 will be enjoying well derserved family time together on the beach in Florida! Creating memories is important, splurging is necessary from time to time!!

I’m married with at 12 year old daughter. My husband had a bad accident back in November and I was required to take care of him for five months until he could learn to walk again. My mind and body took a terrible toll with the stress. I now have the freedom to get back in a healthy state myself and I’m taking it. I have signed up for the gym and I go to Zumba classes. My friend just started selling perfectly posh and I’ve splurged. I’ve had a pedicure recently. I’ve planted a flower and vegetable garden. If you don’t take care of yourself some, your mind and body will pay the consequences. I have learned the hard way.

I use gift cards I earn from different sites/apps every now and then to get myself something I’ve had my eye on.

Waw Mums are the same everywhere! Or should I say women are te same everywhere!we keep think about everybody in our life, everyone 10 miles around even the neighbor! I always cared about my parents, my brothers, sisters and nephews, now I added my husband and my baby, and and … Never me !!

I get monthly massages and occasionally buy my self something nice.

I’m a stay home mum, I was to be a teacher at the university, my husband is working hard at shift night, he sleeps the whole day, and I have to take care of everything: my 15 months old baby, the house, bills, the car, family, friends, the shopping, the Couponing… I’m overwhelmed all the time, I barley have the time to brush my hair and take a bath!!! We think to visit our family overseas, so it’s to me to get everyone a gift or two before summer…what I want so badly a moment alone, with a free empty mind, a long long walk with myself…:-(

I get a massage . Not only does it relieve stress but it gives me an hour to myself where I have trained myself to not think of work , kids or daily stresses . It’s also good for your healthy sinuses, muscle soreness, lymphatic drainage and more . I try to do it monthly but that may not be feasible for some. However, I strongly suggest it .

I have two young lady’s one is hearing impaired she is 23 and has mild seizures that used to last like 3 min and now she is under doctor care ! So, I take her to learn how to make cakes and I pick her up since she can’t drive , and my other daughter has mild cerebral palsy and can’t walk , I love to get them stuff thanks to Collins post got my 23 yr her kitchen aid mixer cheap, and the other daughter I got her with kohl’s cash and gift cards dresses ! Tomorrow with a bunch of 10 of $10 and 10 of 25 planning on getting them sheets and nice stuff ! I also, work for a 91 yr old man ! And because I realized that I had so many clothes shoes I got a few bags full and gave them away to 3 different people that needed them . Some new since I get all my stuff from Lane Bryant with their cpns and rewards , so, because I’m a cancer survivor it’s going to be 2 yrs .my reward is to finally made the call to the surgeon and go and get reconstructive surgery and called the dermatologist to check some skin things on my face. And realized that I had taken care of all my brothers , my mother with plenty of stuff from me couponing and that’s it’s time to do my surgery and Monday starting my walking eating healthier , since, I have done a lot this past weeks cleaning my closet my daughters closet , cleaning the whole house my gardens and I’m so grateful that I can do a lot of things — and that I don’t feel guilty about not doing enough –

It seems like lately the things I’m treating myself to are surgeries for a healthier me. I had my appendix out in January and in two weeks I’m having a 2 part surgery 3 hours from home to hopefully improve chronic pain. With travelling expenses, there is no extra money for me to get a shirt, or treat me and my girls to dinner. There’s no me time because my ex is a jerk and chooses his other kids over ours. I cherish the moments I have with them as my treat-even when I’m at my wits end and want to give up. So when the laundry is piled up and there is a few dollars to do it at the laundryat instead of my mom’s, I’d rather spend $20 doing it between homework, dinner, and baths with my girls at my apartment complex. That’s what I do for me.

I rarely buy anything for my self since my child has born. Whenever I have coupons or money from surveys I buy for him or my husband. Sometimes, I try to treat myself with buying something in the end I put them in a gift closet. My family lives overseas so I collect the gifts for them all year long.

I treat myself to a bar of organic chocolate when I grocery shop at trader joes YUM!!

Well this was a depressing post…everyone just stopped in to “brag” about who has the worst life.
I love my life and don’t care about material things.
I treat myself to travel! I would rather have experiences. Most of my travel is for obstacle course racing, so I get to do something I am passionate about, go places I would never think to go, and improve my heath and fitness 🙂

I definitely don’t think people were “bragging” about having the worst life. They were simply sharing how they can relate. Many of us have full plates & struggle in this area, we forget we are as worthy as everyone else. I personally found this post comforting, because I can absolutely relate.

      • MADIHA

I agree with you Rebecca, I also found this post comforting. Some people don’t have the kind of life to do the things that others can and sometimes you just want to vent. I think we all struggle in someways, no one has a perfect life. I have four kids and the youngest one is five months old so I don’t get to do as much but I still like going out with the little guy while the other three are in school and their dad is at work. I know life isn’t easy right now but it will get better. I love my life but I don’t bash myself when I am feeling down. It’s okay to feel sad, angry and stressed. As long as you have the will to push yourself, you can get through any difficult day of your life. I want to travel but I know that I can’t with a family of six and one income but we as a family try to do local activities and we are saving up to take the kids to Disney. Whoever is reading this post please know “that you are worth it” and you are not selfish when you take some time out for yourself. Just hold on tight, life will get better. 🙂 <3

I say coupon, bargain shop, and trybyour best to get deals but do not be afraid to also splurge on something a little indulgent. Like I am eyeing a pair of Frye boots. Not cheap but I will do my best to get the best price. But I know they will last. It is ok to splurge occasionally.
