Is this similar to a Roku?

  2. rn30032

My dad just got one and loves it…movies that just came out as in 2016 are on it…so may get me one

    • Van

These don’t come with movies just released. The one your dad has probably has been uploaded with a software. I see a lot of people on Facebook selling those.

      • dblD-amber

If you’re primarily us8ng it for that loaded software called “kodi” then there are way better devices than the firestick. Much more stable devices

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh cool! Thanks so much for the feedback!

    • A

I’m sure the one you dad had is “jail broke” we have one like purchased off eBay. If you buy this one, it will not have recently released movies on it until they are available on D do

I love it! We got one around Christmas time and definitely use it often. Very easy to setup and use!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

So glad to hear how easy it is to get started! Thanks for the review Kelli!

  4. Kelly

How does it work? Do you have to pay a subscription fee?

    • Tracie

We got a subscription to playstation vue to use with our amazon boxes and it has a ton of programming, with on demand shows! we pay about $35/month for it. We did have to get an antenna for local channels though. Still cheaper than what we were paying for cable!

My tv is not smart tv ,can i use it if i have dish ?

    • Li

It plugs into an HDMI input. it connects to the internet thru wifi. If you have a prime membership you can use it to stream amazon or you can rent and buy movies and tv shows. I have a Roku, but this is similar.

I have both a Roku and Fire stick. I am still learning how to use both of them but I don’t think either one is better than the other. They both basically do the same thing so I would just go with the cheaper one when you are ready to buy, although I would say the Fire is a little aesthetically better to look at on the TV.

Ill try to answer some questions, but I am still a newbie. Basically, once you hook up your stick, you have to add channels: both the roku and fire have dozens/hundreds? of channels to choose from. Some channels (for lack of a better word) stream ‘free’ movies or TV shows but IMO they are older movies (or B/C-list movies) and/or you have to watch a lot of commercials. BUT, if you spend some time and look around, you can find some great things to watch.

Other channels/apps/services (like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Sling, etc.) do not come free with any device: you have to subscribe. For example, Amazon Prime does not come free with the Fire: there is yearly fee for prime. From what I can tell, to get newer stuff, you will have to pay for a service (such as Netflix). From what I hear, you can “unlock” (not sure of the exact term) these devices to get free movies/shows but I haven’t done it because I feel like there is enough for me to choose from.

If you want to watch sports, apparently you can purchase MLB or NBA apps/channels but I haven’t purchased these so can’t recommend or not recommend. FYI, I had Sling because it claimed to have TBS/TNT and I wanted to watch NBA basketball. Well, it consistently went out during live sports shows. Cancelled after a month.

Whoa, this was long post! I Hope this helps someone!

    • Kelly

Thank you! Your post was extremely helpful

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for all the helpful feedback! Good to know!

I have a couple of these and love them. However, I have been frustrated with them in the last month or two as I can no longer access my own personal digital copies of movies to watch through the flixster app and amazon does not have a vudu app either— so if you want to get this to see your own movies, you better check and see what apps might allow you to do that as I haven’t found any.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Bummer! Thanks for the honest feedback Jill!

OK – so I bought one of these a year ago, and it ‘broke’. It quit working. And apparently there’s no customer service on them – you have to buy another one. Can that possibly be right? I may utilize this deal and try it again, but I was seriously underwhelmed. I think it worked for a total of 6 weeks. It is true that this was when they first came out.

    • dblD-amber

I had similar issues. It didn’t break but there were issues and yes amazon customer service attempted many things but could not fix them. I was basically told they could do nothing for me.

  9. Tracie

We had a fire stick and after a week we returned it since it wasn’t strong enough to pick up our wifi signal (router downstairs and tv upstairs). We got one of the amazon boxes (i forget the actual name) and it works much better!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Sorry to hear this one was not strong enough. 🙁 Glad you found a stronger option!

  10. Queenmum

We bought one before Christmas and we love it! So much variety. I’ll be picking up another one today 🙂
*there is an iphone app that lets you use your phone as a firestick remote. Its really handy if the remote gets misplaced.

    • Nana Monica

What’s the name of the app ??

      • Queenmum

        Amazon Fire TV Remote…it’s free
(My husband actually prefers it to the remote)

  11. leslie

I got rid of cable TV recently and bought 4 of these (one for each TV in the house)….LOVE them! Makes me wonder why I didn’t get rid of direct TV sooner. I went from $200 a month Direct TV bill to under $30 (Netflix, Hulu, HBO subscriptions, etc.)

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Wow! Awesome savings Leslie! Thanks for sharing!

      • Patty

Just a tip to anyone who might be intersted in SlingTV, they have added a new option for multiple streams for $20 a month in their basic package. That is three DIFFERENT streams running at once off one subscription. I was going to purchase HBO Now outside of the SlingTV but found out that you can live stream HBO from inside the SlingTV app where you would only get on demand HBO shows from the HBO Now app outside of SlingTV. Also for a single active viewing you can get a discount thru your TMobile account that makes it only $13.99/month. What is KEY to any of this is you must have a very strong, stable internet connection. I think SlingTV has upped their game just recently. So if you tried before, i would give it another round and see if you notice an improvement.

When traveling, could I take this to a hotel to use in our room to watch movies/shows with Amazon Prime Video?

    • Leslie

You sure can! Just make sure your hotel has a hdmi import and wifi. I bring mine with me everywhere.

    Does this have www app?
