Anyone use a seat like this for a 3 year old? My daughter just turned 3, but is very tall for her age and meets all the other requirements, just not the recommended age of at least 4. Thanks!

    • Brandi

I’m in the same boat! Very tall, just turned 3 year old girl. Interested in others’ thoughts.

    • Jaime

It also depends on the maturity of the child… Ability to sit still, not wiggle around and move the belt, reach for things, etc. Most kids aren’t mature enough until 4-5.

    • julie

Has she outgrown her 5pt harness? I would definitely leave her in there until she outgrows the max’s or even look at a seat where she can be harnessed longer. Maybe a britax pioneer, its been awhile since we bought a new seat but i know there are ones with the harness for taller kids. It would be a big concern to me that my 3 year old (have a 4 yr old harnessed in a britax boulevard) wouldn’t sit correctly in a booster. For me the who point of a car seat is that my child is as safe as possible. HTH

      • Rebecca

She hasn’t outgrown her carseat, just have a 10 month old and will need to move her out of the infant car seat soon. Wasn’t sure if we could get two boosters or whether we’d need 2 more convertibles (for both our cars)

        • Ayesha

Rebecca , your child is too small. Don’t go for booster seat. Go for Graco or Britax for 5pnt harness seat.

          • Heather

I agree with the above. Keep her in a 5pt harness. I have two daughters, one is almost 6 and the other is 4.5 and they both are still in 5 point harnesses. (Peg perego viaggio convertible seats) I wont move them until they reach the height requirement, which my older daughter is a few inches away from.

            • Heather

              not height requirement, height limit.

        • julie

I would definitely go with the 5pt. Check out carseatblog dot com or on babycenter dot com they have a group called car seat questions. They can help you find a seat that fits in your budget, car and best of all fits your child best and will last the longest. If you can’t find the babycenter group lmk and i can email you a link. GL!!

We moved my 3 year old out of his convertible seat because his little sister needs it. He will be 4 soon but will stay in a 5 or harness. I bought a seat that you could remove the harness use the seat belt when your child is ready. Evenflo Maestro I think it was called.

        • Aleshia

Hey, there is so much info out there for parents. You can go a head and move baby out of infant carrier at one year/20 pounds. They make larger convertible car seats which others are calling 5 point harness seats. It is now the law and or requirement’s to keep child rear facing until the age of 2. Their little necks can’t support the force of a car accident and can internally sever their spinal cords and kill them. Then you keep them in the 5 point harness until a certain age, height, and weight. After the age of two they can be moved forward facing unless you wish to keep them rear facing longer. . Hope that helps

          • Kim

Every pediatrician we have had (military move a lot) does not recommend forward facing until at least 4, 2 is for spine but 4 years old is when their bones are strong enough to support their organs. That’s why most rate laws are 4 to be no less than a harness. I would watch a few crash test videos at 30mph your child under 40 pounds is thrown into the seat in front of them. With a seat belt booster a toddler is thrown out of the seat since it’s not made for a 3 year old it doesn’t fit right. Rear facing they hardly move an inch the seat protects them fully. We ❤️❤️❤️ The graco my size from 4 pounds until 120 or maybe 100? It converts from rear facing all the way to a seat belt booster 10 year life son on construction and is steal reinforced.

            • Gretchen

Wow! I’ve never seen a rear facing seat for a 4 year old, wouldn’t there knees be pushed into there face?

              • julie

                Gretchen,
The idea behind it is better a broken leg than neck or death. Kids often sit criss cross or butterfly. My kids have been pretty content with it. HTH!

            • Happymama

I’m with you, Gretchen. My kids are 12 yrs apart and boy did thing change…

      • Emulvey2001

We had a similar problem with a tall, but squirmy boy. He’s in the Britax Pioneer (5 pt restraints) and it’s been perfect. They’re $$$, but if you do some homework, you can save on them!!

    • Caryn

Ditto the others – I think 3 is too young to understand the importance of sitting still – my 6 yr old is still in her 5pt for the safety factors – I love our Evenflo secure kid a she can go into that one at her age 😀

    • Tracy G

I’d recommend factoring in the weight guidelines & height vs just going by age. Those are important variables in terms of whether the seatbelt & head protection will fit your kiddo correctly.

    • Rebecca

Thanks everyone for all the feedback!

      • vmm

most states actually require the child to be at least 4 to legally be out of a 5 point harness…no matter the size since their safety is about their spinal cord age/development.

A seat that has the 5 point harness then becomes a booster would be a better purchase since you have a little one to move into the current seat. these are called “combination seats” some where mentioned above but we really like the Graco Nautilus. The evenflo Maestro is a lower priced but decent option too.

        good luck!

        • vmm

oh and in my state anyway, the legal minimum is 4 yrs old AND 40lbs not OR…

  2. Just Me

I prefer the five point harness for as long as possible. Also you have to factor in that these are easy to unbuckle and you may end up with a loose kid in the car.

  3. Nicole

We just got this exact seat for my 45 pound 6 year old. It’s excellent! Definitely keep them in a 5 point harness as long as possible though!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the helpful feedback Nicole!

  4. Victoria

Yea! It was on my list to get my daughter a new booster! She’s 6 and not yet 40lbs!! We are Almost there! We has a convertible seat/turned to booster in my husbands car. But she needed a regular booster now. happened to have some PayPal balance so got got $30! So excited! Thanks!! We love all the Chicco products !

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Great score Victoria! You’re very welcome!

  5. Nicole

My kiddo is in this seat and is almost about to turn 4 (she is the size of a 6 year old though)! It is awesome, but allows for more freedom of movement as it is a regular seatbelt. This particular seat is AWESOME though! Love that it has latch system so it doesn’t float around in back seat!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Glad to hear that Nicole! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Jessica

Please keep your child in a 5 pt harness. 3 is way too young to be in a booster, regardless of height! Lots of good websites out there with good info!

  7. Sabrina

Just bought this last week at Target. My 8 year old said she likes it so much better than the Graco one that we had.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the feedback Sabrina! Happy she likes it!
