Homemade Whipped Coconut Oil Cooling Lotion
Just in time for Summer, here is a super easy recipe for DIY whipped coconut oil cooling lotion. Not only is coconut oil great to cook with, but it also makes an amazing all-natural moisturizer – it is full of antioxidants and is super hydrating and healing when used on skin.
And did you know that when you whip coconut oil, the consistency changes from a clear solid to a luxurious white body butter?! This recipe combines the healing power of coconut oil with the cooling effects of aloe; I also opted to add lavender and peppermint essential oils.
Whipped Coconut Oil Cooling Lotion Recipe
- 1 cup Coconut Oil, solid
- 1/2 cup Aloe Gel
- 18 drops Essential Oils (I used Lavender & Peppermint)
Directions:
- Place solid coconut oil, aloe gel, and essential oils in a mixing bowl.
- Use either a hand mixer or Kitchen Aid mixer and mix on medium high for about 5-8 minutes until you see the that the coconut oil is turning white and forming peaks.
- Scoop into a container or jar and enjoy!
- Store below 75 degrees so it does not melt.
In addition to making a great cooling moisturizer, this lotion will also provide some natural relief from itching due to bug bites, poison ivy, and hives. Have you tried making lotion from coconut oil before?
I will try this for mosquito bites, my poor kids really suffer in the summer. Thank you.
Fill a spray bottle with water, 20 drops of lemongrass oil and 20 drops of peppermint oil. Best mosquito repellent I’ve ever used! I started making my own when my daughter was a baby and I didn’t want to spray her with nasty chemicals.
Thanks I’m going to do that.
* 4-6 ounces of water
How big should the spray bottle be? I’m definitely going to give this a try, thanks.
Thank you!!!
I used the same bug repellant but added some lavender too!
I make one using lemongrass and eucalyptus with distilled water – I will try adding some peppermint!
The best thing I’ve ever found for itchy bug bites is lavender oil! takes away EVERY ITCH every time! Amazing. (I have a small container of it in my purse at all times for this reason. (mix with coconut oil or other carrier oil but on occasion, I use it by itself as well)
Thank you.
My adult daughter has always had a super intense reaction to bug bites….they swell abnormally large and are hard. She told me to wash bug bite asap and then apply Thayer’s Witch-Hazel. It works like a charm for me. I usually only have to apply once or twice. There are a variety of products available, however, I’ve only used the Thayer’s Facial Toner. I think if you sign up for email promotions, you receive a code for 10% off. https://www.thayers.com/product-category/premium-witch-hazel/
Thank you! Love the essential oil posts!
Well this just looks awesome! Thank you
Sure Susie!
Thank you! This looks great! Really want to try this!
This sounds great for sunburns too. Maybe without the oils though.
Lavender oil is great for burns !
What about peppermint though?
Keep up the all-natural posts! Love them!
I just made some whipped Coconut body butter but instead of using aloe I used Shea butter and it is amazing! Use 7oz of NOW brand Shea butter, 7-10 oz of refined coconut oil, and about 15 drops of gentle baby young living oil and it will change your life. I put this on my babies and myself everyday because it smells and feels SO good.
I love Shea butter too! Great idea
I tried this – mine did not “whip” – it was more liquid consistency. Does anyone have any tips? What am I doing wrong?
It might have been too warm maybe? It should whip up nicely.
yep, coconut oil is liquid at low temps so even just the whipping can liquefy it. I add Shea butter(NOW brand is very reasonable and effective) to help with consistency.
you can just throw yours in the fridge for a while too…it helps:)
I tried a couple of times and it just would not whip. Now, I am still using it…feels and smells great! But even after sitting for an hour, it is still liquid. ????
Nursing mothers take note that peppermint oil will likely deplete your milk supply, just a friendly FYI
Also take note: coconut oil can burn the eyes and other mucous membranes. I have been making these all natural products for years and have personally experienced this. It melts when it comes into contact with skin and can then run more easily, so please be careful, especially with your children!
What effect does essential oil have on animals…namely dogs? Our dog, I believe, has a slight allergy to grass…I would like to use something on him to help with the itching…
I work at a doggie daycare and we regularly use coconut oil on dogs with itchy irritated skin, and also add some into their food to get picky eaters interested in their food again! As long as there isnt some sort of infection going on, it should be safe for your dog!
Thank you so much. I’m going to try it!
I give my dog coconut oil pills daily and when her allergies flair up really bad from being outside I use coconut oil on her fur….works wonders!
Made this for my son today because, despite the copious amounts of sunscreen I put on him yesterday at the water park, he still burned. Mine is a little grainy, but maybe I just need better coconut oil. He liked it though!
