Got fresh fruit?

Do your strawberries start turning bad soon after you take them home from the store? Extend their life with this simple tip so you can enjoy fresh strawberries in the fridge for days and sometimes even a week or two! This is a tip that I’ve been trying since a friend shared it with me and it actually works!

Trick to Making Berries Last Longer by Hip2Save.com

Directions:

Use a large bowl to make a diluted vinegar wash of 1 part white vinegar to 5 parts water and soak your berries in the solution for a few minutes. The vinegar will remove any bacteria and mold spores – which is what typically causes strawberries to go bad so quickly. In fact, see the photo above of what the water looks like after you rinse the strawberries. Yikes!

Be sure to dry strawberries thoroughly!

Place strawberries in a salad spinner on top of a couple paper towels and carefully dry them or let air dry in a colander. After dry, store strawberries in the fridge on top of a paper towel.

Do the strawberries taste like vinegar?

No, they don’t! I promise!

Although I haven’t personally tried this method with other berries, I hear it works for raspberries and blackberries too!

I’ve always heard not to rinse the strawberries until you’re ready to eat them. I think I will experiment with a few of these ideas and see what seems to work the best.

I use vinegar and water to wash all of my berries. As long as you rinse them well, you won’t ever taste the vinegar. Clean any fruit or veggie that you eat the peel/skin.

Does this work for any other fruit/veggies? for example tomatoes?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes I would say this is a great general produce wash 🙂

I use this method on all my berries, ras, black berry and straw, works really well. After I take them out of the vinegar and water, I rinse them and then let them sit on a paper towel or fruit drying pad, then store them in refrig in original container, no vinegar taste at all…I’ve kept berries for two weeks.

I use apple cider vinegar like this to wash all my produce. So much cheaper than buying Veggie Wash.

this method works perfectly. I have kept strawberries this way for over 2 weeks! they typically go bad overnight if I don’t do this method.

Wow! I had no idea you could do this. I love strawberries, but am notorious for not eating them in time . . . so I will try this. Lina, you are one of my favorite contributors! Thank you for sharing this.

Aw thanks so much Justine! That made my day!
