HOT! Getting Toasty! Lukewarm Starting To Melt Ice Ice Baby

Do you ever have a major Pinterest Fail, or a great idea that doesn’t work out? I’ve been creating DIY & Recipe content here at Hip2Save for a couple years and have had more than my fair share of ideas that didn’t work out for me!

Maybe it’s the idea, or user error, or both. 😉

I get inspiration not just from Pinterest, but also from tips from fellow Hip2Save colleagues, family, friends, readers like you, magazines, and cookbooks. My job title could be Lina- “Professional Trier of All the Things”

For instance, I now know that sharpie markers rub off of ceramic coffee cups, sugar free flour-less cookie dough bites are a little gross, and quite a few slow cooker recipes can turn out mushy and tasteless!

I truly make a point to only share ideas here on Hip2Save that I get excited about and that aren’t super complicated to accomplish.

This week, I tested out this Camping Hot Dogs idea from a beautiful pin I saw on Pinterest via this lovely website, Frugal Coupon Living. As you can see, mine look a little different! 🙂

I’m thinking this happened to my crescent roll covered hot dogs on a stick because I cooked them on a grill and secured the foil too tightly. I also failed to soak the wood skewers in water. Whoops! Haha! I bet this would have turned out better in the oven and maybe without foil?

I love it when people keep it real. Thanks, Lina!

  2. Amanda

Love it! Makes the rest of us feel so much better!

I tried this last summer while camping and it was a complete fail as well 😣 We did them in sticks over the fire. The dough burnt on the outside, hot dogs were cold on the inside. I thought my kids would love them but they ended up peeling off the dough and just eating the hot dogs. 😕

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Haha yes same here! 😀

  4. CheapCheapgoestheMommy

I’m so happy to find out your human too! Congrats on all your beautiful creations and fails, or as I like to call them
    “valuable lessons learned” 🙂

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Thanks so much!! Yes they have all been lessons! It’s great to learn new things daily 😀

      • mel

My friend served these at a BBQ a few wks ago and she said it was a fail on her part the first time she made them too! Thought there must be a hidden secret the pinterest pin left off (you know how granny always had that secret pinch of something to make the gravy taste soo good!). So she tried them by boiling the dogs and letting them cool, then wrapping in the dough and cooking according to directions. And def soak the wooden scewers at least 30 mins (or longer) or use metal ones.

I had a mini corn dog fail. The pinterest picture and recipe looked so beautiful but when I tried it the corn meal was drippy and nasty and looked like something my 4 year old would have done. You certainly are not alone I your pinterest fails.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Haha thanks Danyal!

    • Queenmum

I tried those too! Special ordered sticks, bought peanut oil, and epic FAIL! Lol 🙂

  6. Stephanie

Thanks for the smile Lina. We all aspire to matching that picture perfect outcome, and sometimes reality has a different idea. Keep on doing what you do!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh so true – Thanks for your support Stephanie!! 😀

  7. Lesa

Ha ha. Glad to see I’m not the only one who does Pinterest fails, have you seen the gorgeous oven dried strawberries, mine had to be scraped very long and very hard from the pan they stuck so bad.
    Thanks for sharing Lina.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

No but that sounds like something I would do! Ha –Thanks for reading Lesa! 🙂

  8. Susie

That’s why I have a board called “wins” and one called “won’t make it agains”.🙂

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

That is a genius idea!! – Thanks Susie 😀

  9. Kim Tenny

Oh so many fails here too. I laughed at your hot dogs cuz that’s what mine would look like. I did, however, find an EPIC buttercream frosting recipe that I can even make and had tons of people ask me for the recipe. Even yesterday I convinced a girl to put down that canned gross frosting and gave her my recipe. And she went for it!! I don’t have the pin handy but if you search buttercream frosting there is a picture of the perfect cupcake with light blue frosting and sprinkles….That’s the one. Super easy. Super good. I had to post my one and only Epic Pin. ; )

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

That is so great! I will look for that! – Thanks Kim 😀

    • Brooke

We all need that frosting recipe now!

    • Rose

You make me want to bake cupcakes now!

      • Janette

I hope this is the one. I just pinned it!

      • Kim Tenny

YES!!! I even picked up a reusable piping bag and some interchangeable tips (for a couple dollars) and I was so proud of how they turned out. I never did it before and I have to say they looked amazing and tasted amazing! Best of luck!!

    • sne3103

Oh could you please post a link of that one? I tried searching but couldn’t find a picture of the cake you described.. I need a recipe for my baby’s smashcake this Tuesday!

    • Vivian

Ok I need this recipe… I do find the sprinkles cupcake frosting recipe made with unsalted butter is yummy!

My ultimate fail- cake pops!!! What the heck! They’re so hard!

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

        Yum! Thanks 😀

    • Kim Tenny

HERE’S THE PIN FOR THE FROSTING! http://pin.it/hPPzmYE Youcan also pipe it. It’s perfect consistency!

      • Niki

Thanks! Do you use the cream cheese in this recipe? If so, how much? Again thanks, sounds yummy!

        • Kim Tenny

I don’t. I haven’t tried the chocolate version either but can’t wait to!

          • Niki

            Okay thanks!

  10. Erika

I just love that all the hip2save girls are so down to earth! Thanks for sharing this Lina and for keeping it so real! 😋

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Aw thanks Erika!! <3

  11. Just Me

These are my favorite but they tend to be salty.

We did the chocolate chip cookie dough in a pie pan on the grill. The plan was to make a big cookie for us all to scoop out a chunk then put in a bowl and top with vanilla ice cream. The cookie mix called for an egg, which we didn’t have since we were camping. My mother comes up with the idea to use a plop of mayo. It’s worked in many of my recipes as a replacement for eggs so why not? The cookie looked, um, ok. It was a little burned on one side but no biggie. We put it in bowls and topped with ice cream and everybody started gobbling it down. We immediately realized it tasted funny. My mom put miracle whip in the mix instead of mayonnaise. Miracle whip is nothing like mayonnaise and has lots of spicy flavor in it. I’m not even sure if miracle whip contains eggs at all!?! It was kinda gross but guess what, we ate it anyway! Because we are cool like that! My family would have ate your stuff too Lina! When we camp anything goes I guess.

    • Jenni

Lol! 😂😂😂. I love that you ate it anyhow!

    • Michelle

      Miracle whip is the worst!

  13. Jennifer

Oh and I made my friend the fried chicken birthday cake out of cornbread, mashed potatoes, then topped with pieces of fried chicken and gravy. It looked really great at home. By the time I got the cake to her house it resembled a volcanic lava flow of gravy and chicken spilling off the side. I drove very slow, not sure what happened. And,yes, her family ate it anyway… At least they said they did, lol. Nailed it!

  14. Michelle

The trick to making something like this in the grill is to cook these on indirect heat. Have have made several crescent roll recipes in my grill but u almost have to use it like an oven. I have a gas grill with the temp display on the hood so I would get your grill to 350 but only have one side of the grill heated. Yes you must soak the sticks or use metal ones than I would place those on a sheet pan on the side without the heat. I “bake” a lot in my grill but not on direct heat. In the summer when it’s to hot to make cookies inside the grill works just as well. HTH

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Wow – that’s so smart! Thanks Michelle!

  15. Georgia

Had a Pinterest fail just today! I tried to make cupcake cones (cupcakes in ice cream cones). Was going to put cute frosting & sprinkles and they were going to be super cute for our church bake sale tomorrow. Every. Single. One. Overflowed. They looked horrible & if I could post a pic of my fail I would. So I went to the store & bought cookies from the bakery and packaged them like I made them 😆

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh no! Haha— I like your solution!

    • M

      Haha! Love this!

  16. Kimberly

I wish I could get more confident about crockpot cooking, but they have almost all been fails.

    • Vivian

My husband rolls his eyes every time I say I’m making a crockpot meal- chicken usually turns out mushy

  17. AG

Lina, you are truly the best.. I have used so many of your recipes and crafts. Most of mine come out pretty good, but certainly not Pinterest perfect! Tomorrow I am going to try the No Bake Eclair cake. Will probably be delicious, but funny looking! 🙂

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Thanks so much for the sweet comment! That makes my day. 😀 And I’m sure it’ll be great!

  18. Ariel

I love Pinterest, but have definitely found some fails. I saw tons of pins about the oil control method so I gave it a try on my oily skin. For about a week, my skin looked great…and then MASSIVE break out so bad that I had to go to a dermatologist and I still have scars. Epic fail 🙁

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Oh no! 🙁

  19. ILuvH2S

I tried making an Edible Arrangement one year for hubby for Valentine’s Day. It turned out terrible!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Haha – that’s funny!

  20. BxH

I made this two days ago and it worked except I didn’t put them on a stick and raped them loosely in foil turning occasionally as they cooked, if let too long that picture describes it perfect. But keep in mind that if your in the outdoor you can’t always control the heat or flames, so yes it’s always a chance that it won’t come out right, we enjoyed making this form of a hotdog as a family and will continue to use it next time

  21. Amy Stotts

I found wonton wrappers on closeout at Kroger and bought several packs of them, knowing they could be frozen. So, off I went on a search for recipes that wouldn’t require deep frying as I’m totally not going to deep fry anything (they get enough of that junk when they go out to restaurants!). I saw a great recipe on pinterest using them to cover string cheese to make mozzarella sticks. HECK YEAH! My family would go nuts! Errrr…wish I had a picture, but the end result was wonton wrappers in a pool of mozzarella cheese. My dad and son took the baking sheet to the table and used forks to eat them anyways, though. 😀

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh that’s funny! I’ve seen that pin! I will say that I’ve baked mini tacos with wanton wrappers inside muffin tins and mini lasagnas too. That idea works😀 –Thanks Amy!!

  22. kk

Hahahaha…I wish I kept a photo history of all of my pintrest fails now!!!

  23. Ashley Recio Langston

Thanks for sharing our camping hot dog recipe. I have had those Pinterest Fail Moments too! Trying spraying the tin foil as well has cooking the hot dogs in a place far away from the flame that is still quite hot!

  24. Suzanne H

I LOVE apple chips like the ones that come on a Panera salad so I found a recipe on Pinterest that looked perfect. The first batch came out like rubber no matter how long I cooked them and the 2nd batch stuck to the sheet – it took me ages to scrape them off! Pinterest fail!

  25. Kristy

One of my funniest pinterest fails was when I was packing for a road trip last year. I saw this awesome idea for putting your shoes in a shower cap to keep your clothes clean. Yeah, maybe it works if you are a shoe size six, but my size 11 shoes looked like I was using a children’s shower cap!!! None of those packing tips help me, it’s like they’re always made for such tiny people lol.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Oh haha! That’s funny 😀
