What's in my purse

You know those articles in magazines – the ones sharing all of the goodies inside a celebrity’s purse? I personally think those are fun to read as I love seeing what others carry around and the products they like etc. HOWEVER, that can’t possibly be what their purse typically look like? Can it?!

To keep it real, my purse is a trash can and what my family refers to as “the bag”. “The bag” hauls around everything that the kiddos and hubby throw inside – water bottles, bags from the dentist (anyone else admit to carrying these around for months?), weird crumbs, candy wrappers, a warm string cheese, expired coupons, a lip balm with no top and the list goes on…

The real purse

With that said, I thought I would share The Real (as pictured above) and the I Wish (as pictured below). A girl can dream, right?!ย  In all seriousness, though, I do think it’s fun to hear about what others keep inside their purses and what products they enjoy.

So today I thought I’d share some of my favorite purse products. Products that I hope to one day have neatly stored in my purse.

Stay tuned for more “What’s in My Purse” posts. The whole Hip2Save team will each be taking a turn to share the little treasures inside their bags!

What’s in my Clean and Nicely Organized Purse…

Dream Purse

NuNaturals Stevia

If you’re trying to reduce your sugar intake, Stevia is a great alternative. However, keep in mind that many of the brands out there don’t have the best taste and often have a really bad aftertaste too. I have tried quite a few and by far my favorite brand is the NuNaturals liquid Stevia. I actually carry a bottle around in my purse and use it often to sweeten my beverages when I’m out at a restaurant (coffee, iced tea etc.).

Best on-the-go snack ever and I really love that I can quickly read through and pronounce every single ingredient! Amazon often offers up fantastic deals on Larabar gluten-free bars. You can also make your own! I like these bars SO much that I did just that ===> check out the recipe here.

Archer Farms Roasted & Salted Cashews

I usually always have nuts in my purse. They are a yummy and I’m often snacking on them while running errands. I don’t know what it is about the Archer Farms cashews, but they are SO good. Just the right amount of saltiness. Love ’em!

Gum and/or other Breath Fresheners

Gotta keep the breath fresh while out and about, right? Many of the gum flavors that sound so darn delicious end up losing their flavor within literally a minute or two. My favorite gum that tends to keep its flavor and tastes great is the Orbit Sweet Mint Gum!

Also, if you’re not a gum chewer, another option is the Listerine Pocketpaks Breath Strips. They are strong, but definitely keep your breath fresh.

Platypus Flossers

Platypus Orthodontic Flosser

OK – so this is only for us braces peeps, but I had to share because these flossers ROCK! I honestly don’t know how I would live without them. Adult braces are HARD to deal with ~ the food… oh the food. It literally gets stuck in every single bracket and crevice. Eeeek – drives me nuts!

Thankfully these flossers have come to the rescue. Now keep in mind that they are not very budget-friendly, but the price is still worth it in my opinion. They make the whole flossing process SO much faster when you’ve got braces and I’m all about saving myself time! The Spatula end fits under your arch wire – which makes flossing so easy!

In my area (Boise, Idaho), I’ve found these at ShopKo and Albertsons. In addition, you can buy these on Amazon here. You can also check their store locator here.

Purse Items

Wet Wipes

Because if you’ve got kiddos, wet wipes are often always the answer! I usually carry the Kleenex brand in my purse – I find them to be thicker and they definitely help to get the job done. You can get yourself stocked up by purchasing a whopping 24 Kleenex Fresh on the Go Moist Wipes 10-count packs from Amazon.com!

Tide Pens

Tide Pens To Go Instant Stain Remover – Because I am a coffee addict. Need I say more?

The Wet Brush

These Wet Brushes are great for those of you who have fragile hair like my daughter and I do. They make brushing through tangles much easier. This is the only brush that my daughter will use as she has a very sensitive scalp and literally complains if I use any other brush on her hair.

BB Cream

I’m a huge fan of BB Cream since it’s basically a product that does multiple things – all in one bottle! It’s a moisturizer, adds natural coverage, and feels like you’ve got hardly anything on your face. I honesty have not found a brand that I’ve fallen madly in love with. The two I often use currently are the L’Oreal Paris Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream and Clinique Age Defence BB Cream SPF 30 (definitely MUCH more expensive than the L’Oreal).

A GOOD Mascara

I am emphasizing GOOD because, if you wear mascara, you likely know that there is way more bad than good out there. I have tried lots of different brands and many expensive brands over the years – never satisfied. Until one day a couple of years ago – the day I purchased a tube of CoverGirl mascara, and I have never looked back. Seriously.

CoverGirl Masacara is the BEST. Not only does it work well, but it doesn’t cost a lot – very budget friendly. I have tried a few of the different CoverGirl lines and have been very pleased with most of them. NO more eyelashes clumping together and becoming one VERY long and thick eyelash.

Have you heard of a unibrow? There’s also something called a unieyelash. I’ve had lots of experience with them – they are not pretty. Thankfully, when I found CoverGirl, I was able to say goodbye to them for good.

I currently am using the CoverGirl Clump Crusher Lashblast Mascara. Great stuff!

Burt's Bees products

Burt’s Bee products

There are a couple of Burt’s Bees products that I use often! One of my fav products is the Burt’s Bees Almond & Milk Hand Cream. This stuff is awesome! I have pretty dry skin and this cream definitely helps with that. It is on the thicker side, so a little goes a long way. The scent smells SO good (think sweet almonds) and I love how my hands feel after using this cream.

I also am a fan of their lip products. They seem to stay on well compared to other brands and keep my lips moist.

Bumble & Bumble Dry Shampoo

Bumble & Bumble products

I have really fine AND thin hair. It’s limp, hardly grows and is the type of hair that is very difficult to add volume too. If you’re in the same boat, I definitely recommend trying out Bumble & Bumble products. Their products are on the pricier side, but well worth it in my opinion. Here are a couple of my favs…

Bumble and Bumble Pret A Powder Dry Shampoo
I’ve tried a lot of dry shampoo products and they typically weigh-down my hair and actually make it feel greasy –ย  basically they do the opposite as to what’s stated on the bottle.

The Bumble & Bumble Pret A Powder has been one of the only products that actually works for me. It’s a powder that I basically rub in around my scalp. This powder makes it easy for me to go days without washing my hair, plus gives my lifeless hair some body and volume! Yay for that!

Bumble and Bumble Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry
If you’re also dealing with thin/fine hair, this Bumble and Bumble Surf Foam Spray does the trick. It makes your hair feel and look MUCH thicker. It gives your hair grit – not sure if that makes sense? I’m guessing for many of you with thick hair, grit likely isn’t a good thing. HOWEVER, for us thin hair gals, I personally LOVE the feeling of grit in my hair – it means no limp and flat hair strands, but instead body and style!

Pacifica Waikiki Pikake Perfume Roll

Roll-On Perfume

I love the small roll-on perfumes as they are the perfect size to throw in your purse! I’m a BIG fan of the various Pacifica roll-on perfumes – they smell great. Many of their scents smell like you’re on a tropical vacation. Some of my favorites include – Pacifica Hawaiian Ruby Guava, Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom, and the Pacifica French Lilac Perfume.

Glass Nail File

Glass Nail File

If you hate that nails-on-a-chalkboard sound when filing your nails, you may want to grab a glass nail file. Not only that, but these glass files are much gentler on your nails, so if you have soft and fragile nails these glass nail files are great. You don’t have to apply nearly as much pressure as the typical files out there and they get the job done.

Oh, Collins! you crack me up all the time, you’re so cute! I love your blog and your videos. I think my purse looks a lot like yours, I do carry a planner with lots of inside pockets for extra paper…I tend to hoard papers/receipts in my purse a lot…trying to change that!

  2. Bethany

I have a wristlet—-anything that doesn’t fit is unnecessary. I tried a larger bag but carrying all that stuff with me was tiring because it was so heavy and a nuisance.

  3. Megan

I actually carry two bags, a purse that I take in stores with me and another bag that I leave in the car. The bag in the car has a book or magazines, my Moleskine planner (I still use a paper planner along with the calendar on my phone. It is very helpful for my ADD), meds, and snacks.

The other purse has my wallet, pen, pencil, Sharpie, and highlighter, Burt’s Bees lip balm (I’ve tried many over the years, but nothing compares), hand sanitizer, nail file, and one of my FAVORITE things ever, a Tweezerman cuticle nipper. I got it with a gift card from my wedding 14 years ago and I still use it almost daily. Anytime I (or my daughter) get a hangnail or raggedy cuticle, I snip it off so I won’t be tempted to pick at it.

  4. sarah

there are always some random Cheerios pieces in my purse…. I believe my preschooler has something to do with it ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. beth

Wait, is that a hot dog bun?! Lmao!! But..I will have to say my bag is a disaster also. Everyone is my family complains that I carry “luggage bag” instead of a purse, BUT they don’t complain when there’s room to throw their junk in it when we are out and about somewhere:)

  6. Megan

I love that you have a hot dog bun in your purse! It made me LOL, for sure!!! My purse is a nightmare. I can never seem to get up the courage to clean it out….

  7. sporksoma

My purse has glucose tabs, blistex, and my wallet. If we’re going to eat when we’re out, I stick in my glucose meter and my insulin pen setup.

Now that my kids are older (the youngest is 5) my purse has slimmed down so much. If they want to bring something when we go out, they know they’re responsible for it. It took 1 time each of losing/forgetting something and it’s never happened again, especially since they like carrying backbacks or purses of their own.

  8. Monica

Love love love the WET brush!! I got one a couple months ago, best brush for tangly hair hands down! ๐Ÿ˜Š

  9. ann brun

All I store in my purse is coupons ( a lot of expired one) and receipts.. they say that you can tell what someone is by looking at their purses, I think that people would think that I am the messiest and most unorganize people on earth ( which is not true). the little time I have I spend it looking for great deal and making great shopping.. so not enough time to organize them lol

    • Jiggi

Ann, it is hilarious. Yes indeed tons of coupons in my purse along with receipts. I have a coupon pouch but they just end up outside of it when I don’t score the deal i wanted at the store. We leave our purses of on a open shelf at my work. I am afraid one day it’s going to fall and coupons flying everywhere along with tons of pens that I put in my pocket and then into the abyss of my purse. Lol.

  10. Angela

So you must of had a dentist appt recently too huh? I have the same little bag in my purse from my appt last week! Hey a toothbrush and toothpaste, they might come in handy while ur out and about ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Liz s

Really? That’s what’s in your purse? Eeewwww :).

  12. Michele

Collin, I LOVE your purse (and enjoyed a chuckle looking at the contents of it – mine is a black hole too!). Can you tell us about it?!?

    • Meg

This has been great!!! I’m not alone. My purse is definitely a black hole. When someone asks if I have gum, I dig into the hole and hope there is a piece free of lint, crumbs, hair, etc… My coworkers now ask if I have a fresh stick of gum or “bottom of the bag gum”๐Ÿ˜ณ

      • Shelly

OMG, my family refuses to eat any “purse candy”! They think its disgusting. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Patty

Once while digging for those “lost keys” that are always just lost in the purse, I found a snack bag of raw quartered apples from earlier in the week. Glad that zip seal works! I have found a snack bag of carrots but they at least hold their shape unlike the apples! My purse if a shopper style and I work in an office and bring my lunch, snacks, etc. along with a laptop. No kids but I manage to keep up a pretty fast pace as we do not spend a lot of time at home until the weekends. That is when I realize that I forgot I put something in there and failed to take it out when I returned home in the evenings.

  14. Nikki

Colin, I use hip2save religiously. I’d love to have you do a review on LimeLight by Alcone’s Perfect Mascara! Completely free!! Email me if you are interested!!

  15. Jo

Btw, you can get those flowers at Dollar Tree! 40 or 50 count for $1!!!

    • Jo

      I mean flossers! Lol

  16. Maddie

Great share, Collin! I’m a huge fan of my “purse cleaning days” where I dump everything out and put only the “necessities” back in – it never fails that I find the weirdest stuff deep down in the bottom of my purse! ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. LaDawn Click

WET BRUSH is a necessity! My 2 daughters and I will use nothing else. It is the BEST BRUSH EVER!!! I’ve talked all my friends into buying one and they all LOVE them!

    • Brenda

Is that what is written on the package? I have not heard of it. It sounds like something I could use.

  18. ihearthip

When my kids were younger I gave up my ocd and embraced the mom purse, and strove to have anything anyone might need in my walking medicine cabinet. But as my kids have gotten older I’ve tried to be as minimalist as possible. I usually have whatever cards I’m going to need, travel lotion, lip balm, my phone, a few tissues. Yes sometimes I do not carry hand sanitizer. After a trip out I return home with trash and receipts but I eventually clean them out.

  19. Brandi

I am loving the new Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue- it’s a BB/CC/tinted moisturizer and it covers well but is super light weight!

  20. Rebecca

Love Bumble & Bumble products! I’ve got fine thin hair. The powder shampoo is amazing! Just got the surf foam today…can’t wait to try it!

  21. AZMomma

I must be the weirdest mom/art teacher ever! I have a really organized wristlet and diaper bag ju-ju-be (love the pockets). I won’t let my husband touch them because he’s a clutter bug.

  22. Paige

That is why I carry a small purse. I can’t imagine how much your purse weighs! I had to go to a smaller purse years ago bc the big heavy ones were killing my back and posture. I do keep a bag in my car with feminine products, a travel deodorant, a brush, and a few other things. That way its there if I need it. I carry a coach mini satchel with a small wallet, a hand sanitizer, pepper spray, and a lip gloss. There is room for my keys, sunglasses and a small snack for my son. Super easy to keep organized. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • ILuvH2S

Yes! I agree. Big purses throw off your alignment. I store the extra stuff in my car. Only the stuff I absolutely need all the time goes in my purse!

  23. Erin

This made me laugh because I have often had a warm string cheese in my purse AND I just went to the dentist Monday and the bag of goodies is still in my purse!!!!!!!

  24. Jeannie

Lol…my brother refers to my purse as my filling cabinet… lots of full pages of printed internet coupons, assorted paperwork and bills!!

  25. Carrie

I keep that same exact ipsy bag in my purse! Its my favorite ipsy bag yet! So cute!

  26. Carrie

That hair brush for those who havent tried it is amazing!

  27. Emily

So funny! Today, I needed to take my purse to an event at work and knew I would be holding it for hours. I emptied it in my desk to make it lighter and only took the necessities for that event. I swear that I lightened it by ten pounds!

  28. ILuvH2S

I’ve gotten it down to 5 things I have to have in my purse (keys, wallet, iPhone, sunglasses and lip balm). I try not to have anything else because that adds weight to one side and throws off your alignment.

  29. ๐Ÿ’•Yoli๐Ÿ’•

Thanks for sharing. That’s my purse exactly. Adding deodorant, a baby bottle, 2 diapers and a small pack of wipes for quick errands lol. I love that you are yourself with us and invite us into your home, life and now purse โ˜บ๏ธ

  30. pandatrex

I actually stopped carrying a purse about three years ago. It has been wonderful since no more huge luggage to lug around lol. I switched to a man’s wallet which keeps everything I need in one spot , I usually keep coupons where the cash should go as I rarely use cash anymore. It’s quick and easy .

  31. Jamie

I decided to take your recommendation on a few things – the bb cream which is pretty cool how it changes color, the gum which I haven’t tried yet, I will be buying the mascara & checking out the bumble & bumble products. Thanks for sharing.

  32. Katherine Williams

I spend a lot of time trying to organize my purse, and yet it only takes a few seconds to undo all of that hard work. I tried carrying smaller purses, but that didn’t help me either. I have tons of ink pens, lip balms, coupons/receipts, loose change, and a bunch of other random things floating around in my purse at any given time.
