Free Apps for Road Trip

Sure, road trips can be fun… or was that just in college? But they also have a tendency to be boring, irritating, and frustrating. Thank goodness for modern technology, which has given us the following apps to make road trips more fun and comfortable, and less likely to make us want to strangle our co-passengers.

Roadtrippers

Roadtrippers

Enjoy the journey as much as the destination by letting the Roadtrippers app (Android, iOS) plan your trip. Just enter where you want to go and when, tell the app what kinds of things you’d like to see on the way (and how far out of the way you’re willing to go to see them), and Roadtrippers will do the rest.

You’ll get tons of attractions, points of interest, outdoor recreation spots, cool restaurants, and practical stuff like accommodations and services to utilize along the way. Roadtrippers will even estimate your fuel costs for the trip!

Field Trip

Field Trip

Field Trip (Android, iOS) alerts you to interesting things to see and do wherever you are. Based on your location and categories you select — like Architecture, Historic Places & Events, Art & Museums, and Food, Drinks & Fun — Field Trip will send you an alert when you’re near a point of interest.

Sit or Squat

Sit or Squat

When you’re in a strange place, quickly finding a restroom when you need one can be a challenge. And once you find one, who knows what kinds of crimes against nature you’re going to discover in there. Sit or Squat (Android, iPhone) to the rescue!

The app will tell you where to find nearby public restrooms and what condition you’re likely to find them in. The green toilet paper roll icon tells you if the restroom is clean enough that you can sit, while a red toilet paper icon tells means you may have to squat instead. The ratings are based on user reviews, and you can leave your own opinion to help others find their way to relief.

iExit

iExit

iExit (Android, iPhone) gives you a directory of restaurants, gas stations, services, and more at exits along the interstate. You’ll know if you can make it few more exits before you stop for gas, and whether you have to settle for food from that burger chain or you can hold out for sub sandwiches 30 minutes down the road.

iExit will also tell you about attractions, lodging, grocery stores, shopping, health care, veterinary care, banks, and even alternative fuel options at upcoming exits.

   TV FoodMaps

TVFoodMaps

The TVFoodMaps app (Android, iPhone) helps you find famous eateries around the country. You’ll find restaurants featured on shows like Man vs. Food, Chopped, Top Chef, Cupcake Wars, and Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

You can enter a location to see all the featured restaurants in the area, have the app notify you when you’re near one, or enter your road trip route and see which famous stops are along the way.

This is a HUGE help! I’m getting ready to take a long road trip and these will definitely come in handy! Thanks so much!

  2. Kelly

Thanks for the suggestions! I love the Roadtrippers app and the Charmin app. I’m downloading the others now to try out.
I also love GasBuddy and the Bring Fido app when traveling with my mutts!

On my family’s last road trip I found myself using these apps the most. Hope these can help others too!

GasBuddy to see and find the cheapest gas near you. You can also look for cheap gas in places before you get there too! There are also maps included to direct you to the gas station.

Waze was definitely helpful. Based on users adding alerts, it shows where there might be accidents, hazards, and even hidden police!

Google maps to provide step by step directions especially in unfamiliar places!

Love this post! I can’t wait to see other comments. We have driven the same route from Ohio to Connecticut for my whole life. “Sit & Squat” could have been a LIFE changer…some toilettes from remote towns are scary LOL. I would hold it some are so nasty, lol. Oh good memories…

Thanks! We go out west with a 3 year old and a 5 month old in 2 weeks.
