Homemade Slime Recipe (Just 2 Ingredients)
Are you looking for a fun activity to do with the kiddos this summer?
This homemade slime recipe takes just 2 ingredients to make, and it provides lots of gooey wiggly sensory entertainment! 😛 Plus, it’s a great little mini science lesson learning how mixing Borax with polyvinyl acetate (a liquid polymer found in glue) creates one big squishy polymer when the molecules are linked together. My kids LOVED this so much!
How to Make Homemade Slime:
Supplies:
- 1/2 cup (4oz.) Elmer’s School Glue
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon Borax Powder plus 1 cup water
optional; Food Coloring, Paint, or Glitter
Directions: Mix 1/2 cup glue and 1/2 cup water. Add food coloring, paint, or glitter (if desired) and stir well. In a separate bowl, mix the teaspoon of Borax and one cup of water. Slowly combine both mixtures and stir. You will see the slime start to form right away. Stir well, and start using your hands to combine. Pour out any excess water.
Homemade slime notes:
-
- You can keep your slime covered in the fridge so it’ll last longer and not get moldy. The texture over time will get to be more like putty as it’s played with more.
-
- By using the optional ingredients (like food color and paint), you can customize the color of your homemade slime.
-
- If you want to add some sparkle or dazzle to your slime, add some glitter. It’s sure to brighten up your slime and add star quality to it.
-
- ChemMatters claims you can add a fluorescent quality to your homemade slime by doing the following: Cut the tip from a fluorescent highlighter marker, place it in a beaker containing up to 500 mL of water, and after a few minutes, the water will be highly fluorescent. When this water is used to make slime, the slime will be highly fluorescent under a black light.
-
- Also, Elmer’s School Glue seems to create the best results. I tried another slime recipe using liquid starch that didn’t work out for us and the Borax method worked right away. Borax powder can be found in the laundry aisle of the store or on Amazon here.

Hi, just curious how much slime this makes, volume wise? Planning to do this for my daughter’s class for Halloween and want to make enough for all 26 kids to take some home. Thanks!
Hi Casey I would say about a cup. So one batch may work for 2-3 people?
Thank you!! My daughter had a lot of fun making this it was so fun for her but over time it got to be sort of dry, we tried to keep it in a plastic container but it kept getting really dry do you know how to keep the slime nice like it was when my daughter made it?
Can’t wait to try it..thank you
I guess I’ll, to the only one that failed at making this. It was really funny. Added more borax and still nothing.
Meeee tooo. I am slime making challenged.
My daughter loves this stuff and is making lots for a garage sale.
Love it I get to play with it every minute😍
My Littles LOVED this recipe that I’m sharing it on my blog, http://www.the-playground-Chronicles.com. Is it ok if I link it back to you?
Sure and thanks!
Lady call ur kid little they hate it im a kid and u are like 35
hey chloe- my kids ARE little- ages 0-5. They dont mind one bit! and they love slime.
I tried your link but it came up in Japanese, Chinese or a similar language. Not sure if that was supposed to happen.
How is it supposed to feel when ur done? I made it and it breaks apart really easily when it gets stretched…even when i just barely pull it. If I keep rolling it around in my hands, will it eventually become more like silly putty? Thanks!
I’m having the same problem.. have you figured it out yet??
Well you can add a little more water and borax that should work
Yes you can find Elmer’s glue in the uk and borax
Can we get these ingredients or equivalent in the UK?
Yes you can find both ingredients in the uk
I made this slime and it just crumbles. its not holding together like the starch version. anyone know what I can do to make it not crumble??
In first my was the same it wasn’t holding together, but then my son put it baby jar and shake a little and it was in the jar for about 5-10 min and after that it was good.I guess you should just wait for it
Mine was a epic fail. All Stringy
Don’t use borax as it dangers and there was any incident with a child and they got burned cause of it And u can look for the story on Google
Borax is not a safe chemical. There is a better / safer recipe using liquid glue, saline and baking soda. And of course you can embellish with glitter, coloring, buttons, etc!
Borax? For kids?
Am I missing something here?
would washing powder work????
We used Elmer’s glitter glue and liquid starch.
Just Google: Elmers glitter glue liquid starch Valentines Day slime.
So easy and not messy at all! Glitter glue colors are so vibrant!
