   I’m pregnant with my first and trying to stock up on deals throughout the next 6 months before baby gets here. Can anyone give me an estimate on how many breast milk storage bags I should purchase? Ideally, I’d like to breast feed for at least a year. Thank you!!

  I would not stock up too much. I am speaking from experience. I bought breastfeeding items and then was not able to breastfeed for multiple reasons. I wanted to but couldn’t. The money I spent on those items could have been used on formula and such.

  Agree with PP. Don’t buy too much of anything. I would also wait until after your shower. I got some for my shower and also ended up having to use formula. Congrats!!

  Make sure you’re able to breast feed first. And if you’re going to work, I’d use about 3-4 during a work day. While I was on fmla I didn’t use any, for obvious reasons. But like others said, there are several reasons why you may not be able to breast feed so don’t stock up too much. Unless you buy where you can return easily. Amazon only has a 30 day window I believe

  if you’re a stay at home mom, you still might not use many — I think we had about 5000 gallons of stored breast milk by the time we weaned our first, and didn’t ever bother pumping even once with the second – we just never bothered using it because it was quicker and easier to just nurse the baby than to thaw, bottle, warm, feed, wash bottle, etc.

  I found Amazon to have the best deals on milk storage bags and disposable great pads. For price per unit, they were cheaper, plus delivered to your door!

  Sometimes you can get free sample breastmilk bags from stores in there registry bags as gifts to try out. Personally I like the Lansinoh brand. They never leak for me and haven’t cracked once while frozen. I have a whole freezer chest filled up ( over supply) . I would try and get free samples first, until your sure you can breastfeed. You don’t need to worry about pumping if your trying to build a supply until about 8 weeks when your supply regulates. You can pump after each feed if you want to start building a supply, if your going back to work etc.. don’t be shocked if you only get about .50 oz after a feed completely normal. Congrats!

  I have breast fed 4 kids. they stopped between 11-14 months. You don’t need to store just feed when the little one is there. it’s so nice to hold them and feed them. why clean a pump, clean bottles. unless you are going to work. even then you will be feeding the baby evenings, mornings etc… breastfeeding is the best no bottles to clean, its always the correct temperature etc….

   Of course you will breast feed. It’s all in the mind and dependent on if you truly want to do it. Women across the globe do it without difficulty.
   Now stocking up on the bags is a different issue. You should wait till the baby comes for several reason. 1) see what you get from your baby shower. 2) see which brand you prefer as some you can pump straight into the bag. 3) see if you make enough milk to sustain baby and pump extra.

  Born2bewild, I am so happy that you were able to successfully breast feed. Unfortunately it isn’t “all in the mind” and many mothers breastfeed with great difficulty or have to stop even though they “truly want to.” Sometimes breastfeeding is not the healthiest thing for mother or baby. What works for one does not work for all, and as long as a mother is providing her baby with the nutrition needed, then good on her!

  Agreed! My SIL wanted so badly to breast feed for all the health benefits and bonding that it would provide. But she just couldn’t make enough milk and was eventually forced to switched to formula because my niece wasn’t gaining enough weight or getting enough to eat. This is not one of those mind over matter things…

  I had the same problem. trick is keep breastfeeding. my baby was tongue tied. after it was clipped everything was great. We struggled for 6 months. baby was 1% for weight. now 22%.

  That’s kind of a rude thing to say. It feels like mom shaming to those who can’t breastfeed. That attitude is how some women end up accidentally starving their child rather supplement or use formula. It’s not always “in the mind”. I nursed my first without a problem but with my second I hated nursing so much (nursing aversion) that I started to hate my baby. I decided it was more important to spend my time cherishing my baby than it was to breastfeed and be hating her.
