Hapy Friday Diapers

Sent from reader, Sarah:

Hi Collin! I have loved and followed Hip2Save for many years and I tell everyone I know about it! I just wanted to share with your followers that it never hurts to ask, especially politely!

I have a 19 month old son who is big for his age and we’ve been having trouble with his diapers leaking at night time (this photo sums up how we all feel about this and the increased laundry!). This week, I contacted both Huggies and Pampers to share with them my frustrations with their nighttime diapers leaking, and both of them are reimbursing me for my recent purchase of diapers! I’m very thankful for their excellent customer service. (On that note I would love any suggestions for diapers that can actually go 12 hours without leaking.)

It’s amazing what can happen when we take the time to give feedback to our favorite companies.

NOTE FROM COLLIN: On another note, If you have an older child who struggles with bed wetting, be sure to read this post. I had an older child who struggled with bed wetting for years – I had tried everything from limiting liquids at night to waking him up at night multiple times to use the bathroom with absolutely no success. It was disheartening, frustrating and expensive (I was spending tons of money on GoodNites Underwear and was having to wash his sheets literally every day!). If you’re currently struggling with this issue, please read this post and watch the video.

Been having same problem! Luvs and huggies have failed so far. Look forward to reading answers.

    • Amy

Do you put him to bed hours before you go to bed? Wake him up and change him. Then put him back to bed. That should cut down on the length of time he is in the same diaper. We do this it works great.

      • Courtney Newland

Target brand regular diapers (not the nighttime ones) they are the best

        • heather b

          Love target brand!!

        • Selena

Ditto with target diapers! Best diaper ever! Walgreens brand worked well for us with size 4 up! ( didn’t try till son was in this size so I can’t speak for the smaller sizes)

      • Tina

My son was leaking too! He is 3.Huggies night time works for us but I put him to bed at 8:30, have him go potty first then change him when I go to bed around midnight. It seems to help. I was tired of washing too.

    • Kim Tenny

Best thing we’ve found…..I have a 10 year old, autistic, nonverbal son who is incontinent. We’ve tried everything for years…..here’s the best solution: Use a Depends ultimate liner in each nighttime diaper. That way you can get away with not purchasing special nighttime diapers. (I currently had to up the ante on this and came up with a neat way of using three, yes three, he constantly drinks liquids and is an immensely heavy wetter, liners….One placed in the normal position (do not go above diaper edge as it will get wet), and one going across one side slightly overlapping the middle one, and one across the other side. Diapers, for some strange reason, do not have any absorbancy on the sides! I know this seems extreme but it works and I know it’s so much better than sleeping in soaking wet clothes.. or washing the bedding everyday. Good luck.

Hi Sarah, I have a 20 month old and we use Huggies Little Mover’s diapers and they last through the night with no leaks!! I have been using these since he was 8 months old and have had no leaks! (He wears size 4) Wish you the best of luck!

    • Sarah!!

I completely agree!! Make sure the diapers big enough I always let my son wear his diapers a little on the bigger side but little movers for toddlers are def my favorite they don’t get twisted up and seem to stay in place longer!! Also I change my soon right before bed even if I’ve changed him 30 mins ago and the diapers barley wet I hate to waste a diaper but would rather do that then have a wet bed and kid in the morning!!

    • Jamie A

Yes! I think the Little Movers are better at night that the over nights too!

  3. Jaci

What a handsome little guy! Thanks fot sharing your pic!

  4. Jaclyn

Same issue here. I have read to add a cloth insert inside the diaper, but I haven’t tried yet. I don’t know how I’d wash them, which is holding me back. Cute picture.

    • rebecca

no fabric softener (it affects absorbency). if a person is already washing sheets that have leakage on them, just wash the cloth inserts the same way. you could put the inserts in a cycle by them selves that is just a rinse cycle, then wash them with a load of towels or sheets.

  5. Dlila

We have used shoprite diapers and we havent had any leaks! I have girls though…not sure if it makes a difference lol. Dollar general size 5 has worked good for us too! Both of my girls have leaked right through huggies and luvs! And luvs made my oldest daughter (5) break out with a rash when she was in them :/ Good luck! We tried every brand before we tried the shoprite diapers and had no luck staying dry throughout the night! Btw your little guy is so cute!

  6. Melloddie

Huggies Plus(believe it’s only does at Costco currently?) works very well for us.

I second that they work well for us

  7. Laura

Going a size up at night has always helped for my kids.

    • Sarah!!

Yes! Definitely! Make sure it’s on tight though 😀

  8. Jennifer

I’m sorry to report that I have never found a diaper that would work for 12 hours but only because I don’t think my kids have ever slept for 12 straight hours when they were that young, lol!

    • Jen

      LOL, same here.

    • Whitney

My 3 month old just started sleeping 10-12 hours straight about 1-2 weeks ago and is AMAZING!

  9. 3BoyMom

Size up for sure 🙂 that has always worked in my experience

  10. Deb

Don’t know if they still make them, but we had the same problem years ago and used to buy a disposable diaper insert for nighttime use, called Diaper Doublers. (Sort of like a Poise pad for the diaper set.)

    • Rachel

This is our trick – we actually use two disposable diaper pads inside the diaper now! They sell them on Amazon. Just search for diaper pads. Life saver!

    • Sandy

This is what worked for my kids too! If you can’t find them as a baby/kid’s product, try a disability supply website, as they also sell them for people with physical disabilities. Good luck!

      • Kristie

I’m late to the party, but they sell them at babies r us! It’s the BRU brand.

  11. Meredith

I had the same problem with my boys and found that pull-ups and Good-Nites when they were big enough worked better for us. Hope that helps!

    • tam

Same with my boys, use to leak through every night until i switched to pullups.

  12. Queenmum

Try pampers UNDERJAMS. My youngest had the same issue and underjams worked better for us.
    Cutie pie btw!!!

  13. Nancy

I used something called a diaper doubler. It basically looked like a large maxi pad for kids. I really don’t know another way to describe it, sorry. Got it at Publix in Florida. I bet amazon would have them. They really helped.

    • Mindy

I used the nighttime diapers and the diaper doublers (I got them at Babies R Us). Honestly though, my son even leaked through that combo often!

      • Lauren

Mine does too. We had two leaks with that combo last night!

  14. Elizabeth

My little girl sleeps around 12 hours at night in Pampers Overnights and we have never had a leaking issue! I order them off of Amazon.

  15. thanks!

I think it drastically depends on the child. I tried every Huggies they made and nothing worked. But a friend of mine swears by Huggies. I’ve been using nothing but pampers baby dry for a year and had no issues. Most of my friends also used pampers. I just make sure his wee wee is pointed down and the diaper is snug. And I make sure I pull both sides to fully cover his butt after every diaper change. Good luck!

    • Liz Ob

I second the wee wee positioning! My boy had problems wetting the bed with a diaper and this helped so much! And I think it always happens when kids are young. My third will be Potty training soon and I’m expecting washing sheets every night as well. Don’t stress cuz it’s stressful for them too. They feel really bad. Just comfort him and let it pass. All the luck and God bless.

      • Rima

I’ve been using a dry sheet of the mattress protector material (sorry I dont remember the exact name). I cut it up to the size of a receiving blanket, so that I lay a receiving blanket & put my kids sleep on it. This is only to avoid washing the entire bedsheet & doing the bed everyday. Whenever we go out for vacation, I carry these sheets to avoid any embarrassing situation.

    • Sarah!!

Yes boys you have to make sure they’re pointed down lol

  16. savingstacy

I never used the overnight diapers. I always just put on a regular diaper right at bedtime and both my kids rarely had leakage. Maybe cut back his liquids a hour before bedtime.

  17. Ally

We go up a size and double them (1 diaper over the other) and have no issues!

  18. AmandaN82

I add a sposie, it’s a diaper insert you add to a normal diaper, and I don’t put it in his diaper until immediately before bed. I found them on Amazon.

  19. Christy

We always did 1 or 2 sizes up in diapers at night, depending on how much they drank the night before. We usually use the Target brand.

  20. Michelle

I always sized up and even doubled up. If the second layer stayed dry then it is the morning diaper.

  21. Tina

I have always loved pampers baby dry or swaddlers! Swaddlers do better at night for me. I tried luvs, huggies, target up and up, none worked at night…but on a side note, love target ones otherwise!

  22. Erika

I always liked GoodNights when my kiddos were big enough and were sleeping long hours through the night. They work really well, never had any leaks.

  23. Katie

We had the same issue, but around that time my son self-weaned from his bedtime bottle. His nighttime pee dropped by a ton. Not sure what your situation is, but it’s something to consider if he’s close to weaning (or a “this too shall pass” moment).

  24. Mary Alice

Sarah, when my son was little (he’s 6 now), we had the same problem. He would always be wet in the front the next morning. The diapers couldn’t contain the pee. We tried both Huggies and Pampers. Out of frustration, we tried doubling up. We put a Huggies or Pampers on and then a larger size training pant. We used the ones from Dollar General and went a size larger than he was, so that it would cover his diaper and his tummy. It worked. If the diaper leaked overnight the training pant would catch the excess on the front tummy and legs. That is how we combatted the leaks.

  25. Lynae

Goodnites and if they are too big, then use size 6 Huggies Overnites with a goodnites over them.

  26. Love_deals

Limit water intake or milk before bed time. It helps !

  27. Laurie

We used huggies overnights and then on top of that bought some of the waterproof diaper coverups. You can usually find them in any of the stores like Walmart or target babies r us. Good luck.

  28. Lisa

I have 7 children and have always double-diapered at night. Also, I would add that most the brands are not as good as they used to be. I’m glad you decided to speak up.

  29. Mark

What I did when my son was that age, was to triple layers of plastic, and make diapers out of them, They may not have been all that comfortable at night, but they didn’t leak. During the depression, one had to improvise. Back then we didn’t have disposable diapers.

  30. Amy

Huggies overnights and Goodnites worked well for our child. We also went size up on diapers or doubled up. I had similar experience with one pampers product with leaks and contacted them. They sent me 2-3 coupons good for $15 toward any pampers baby diapering product.

  31. Jenn

    Goodnights!!

  32. Megan

When my son was an infant, I was having the same problem. My friends suggested putting him in a night diaper one size larger than what he wore during the day – bingo! Worked like a charm! Huggies Overnights are my personal preference.

  33. Lauri

12 hours!!! You lucky girl!!! Mine never slept that long and I have 3. We always used Target brand and sized up. Lots of great suggestions here…good luck:)

  34. H

This is what worked for me:
Limit bedtime liquid intake and change every 6 hours.
IMO, I would not leave the same diaper on for more than 8 hours anyways.

  35. Amber

I used to double it up at night. I would put a normal diaper on my son, then put a pull up over the diaper. This definitely worked for me. I am a very clean person and had my son out of it as soon as he woke up. I never had any problem-no diaper rash, etc. I also have a large son (95th percentile), and I found size 7 diapers FYI. I used Pampers, and I was able to find size 7 (about 1 inch longer than a 6, not wider) at Walgreens. Good luck!

  36. Haley

Another in the diaper doubler corner. They are cheap and work great.

  37. Hayley

This is going to sound crazy but Parent’s Choice diapers are the only ones that work for us! I have a three year old that doesn’t make it through the night (though she’s been potty trained for a very long time). With my oldest (this was 7 years ago) the only thing I could find to hold the nighttime tee tee was Huggies Overnights! I think the quality has gone downhill. Good luck. It’s frustrating, I know.

Oh and this is going to sound real dumb, but for a long time I discovered I simply needed to size up the diaper! We were using size 5’s and it simply wasn’t large enough. Switched to size 6 and suddenly no more problems with overflow!

    • Ashley

My older son who is now 8 leaked all the time with parents choice brand, even during the day. Maybe they have changed there diapers since then, but with all the issues I had with them for my older son I have not tried them with my 2 year old or 1 year old.

  38. Nicole

I have a two year old and after trying EVERYTHING I finally found that Huggies Overnights a size up works wonders!! I also limit fluids 30 mins before bed 🙂

  39. Vivian

Yes!!! The best ones I’ve found are the Walgreens well beginnings diapers!! I just buy them a size up and they work great for me. During the daytime I’m a strictly pampers cruisers or baby dry gal!

  40. Holly

More food, less milk. I had same issue with my son, and doc said he was drinking too much milk. I limit the milk 2 hours before bed.

  41. Kimberly

My kids are/were all in the 90+ percentile, or off the charts entirely. No lie, Walgreens store brand diapers worked the best for us day or night. As other mentioned, I would also go up one size at night. Once you are at size 6 during the day, I used to use Goodnites for nighttime as they seemed to work better than the rest, but truthfully, all of the pull-ups style diapers seem to hold way less than non-pull-up style.

    • Amy

Thats funny my kids all 4 are complete opposite they barely make it on the charts, my youngest is so small we did mri (which was normal) they thought he had microencphley (sp). That would be funny if we had a pic of your child and mine sitting next together.

  42. Christy

I could not wait to read all the replies since our 2 year old has same problem! We have done Huggies Overnights, Pampers Overnight Protection, Luvs, etc. Nothing has worked…until I finally tried the Honest Company free trial. I also wanted to try the Honest Company because our son has been pulling at the back of his diaper (happens with all Huggies, Pampers, Luv brands) and started a rash too. I have been amazed by the Honest Company diapers… Super absorbent, no leaks, no rash or pulling at back of diaper. And these diapers were not even the specific overnight diapers that the Honest Company offers online. I just ordered my first diaper bundle and included one nighttime pack just out of curiosity. We have not had any leaks with the every day diapers! Hope this helps!

  43. Terri

    Hi Collin,

The Seventh Generation diapers work really well. I use Huggies during the day, and Seventh Generation for overnight. They are more expensive, but well worth it.

  44. Moria

My daughter would sleep 12 hours sometimes more. I used Pampers swaddlers in 1 size larger than during the day and I never had a leak.

  45. Jenn

Both of my girls who are now 7 and 17 would soak their diapers every night! I tried all brands of diapers. Only thing that worked with both of them? PLASTIC covers for their diapers!!!! No more leaks! Hope this helps someone! 😊

    • Jenn

Oh and both of my girls were sleepers. At least 12 hours plus they would nap about 3. Good Luck!

  46. Rachel

My friend just had the same problem. She tried all the ones the overnight ones and he would still wake up wet.
I told her I never had that problem like that but that I use pampers cruisers if she would like to try a few.
It worked! It was full in the morning but he wasn’t soaked and didn’t wake up unhappy. My son is a little older so they were pampers cruisers and 1 size up than his normal size.

  47. Hannah

We love Target Up&Up nighttime diapers!

  48. Karen229

My kids are in college but we used to like the cvs and store brand diapers best. I never had a diaper that leaked.

  49. Rachel

Another vote for the disposable diaper pads. They’re like a maxi pad for diapers. Cheap and a total life saver! They sell them on Amazon. You just put one or even two in the nighttime diaper. Greatly increases the absorbency!

  50. Tracie

We had the same problem. We used target up and u.p nighttime in his regular size then put a regular daytime diaper in the next size up on top of it. Worked for us and if it didn’t leak we used the one over it for the morning diaper.
