Have you heard of Hoopla?

Hoopla Digital allows you to instantly borrow thousands of movies, full music albums, and audio-books for FREE with your library card. All you need is your library card, a web browser, and a smart phone or tablet to get started. Note that Hoopla is only available at participating libraries.

Check out this email from Hip2Save reader, Amy…

I wanted to share my experience with Hoopla with all the Hip2Savers. The great thing about this service is I get to use it during road trips with my family. We don’t have a portable DVD player for the car and we rely on downloaded movies often for our iPhones or iPads to keep the kiddos happy. We actually have subscriptions to Hulu and Netflix but neither of these services allow you to do download movies and since we don’t have WiFi in the car, streaming would get expensive on our mobile plans. This is the only way we can get new movies for the kids on long car trips without having to buy or rent digital copies of movies. It’s so easy!

Limits are set by your local library on how many items you can borrow. Once you log into your Hoopla account, you will see a red bubble in the top right with how many titles you have left. This limit will reset at the beginning of the month. Movie and TV content is available for 72 hours (3 days) after borrowing. Music albums are available for 7 days, and eBooks, comics and audiobooks are available for 21 days.

We live in the middle of nowhere. . I love this idea but its not avail to us. Is there anything similar to this with free downloadable movies??

    • Mel

I believe as long as you have a library card from a city that has this feature, it will be fine.

  2. Jsturner1

We have this in central California. We get 6 free audio books a month! Basically 6 of everything. 6 movies, 6 ebooks, 6 audio and I think 6 comic books. It’s awesome. It has newer stuff too like Husbands Secret. My daughter loves it.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

OH awesome! Thanks for the feedback! Happy to hear your daughter is enjoying it!

  3. charity

We have this in Maryland. I love it. We can get 10 items a month.

Check with your local library, library system or state library. There are other programs available that provide similar access. If not, let them know what you are looking for. Libraries are the ultimate source for all information!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks for the suggestion Christine!

      • Christine

All states allow state residents to obtain library cards from any library within the state. In addition, some libraries allow non-residents of the state to purchase access to their services. It is typically under $50 for the year. A great value for 8+ movie downloads a month! BTW- I first got started in couponing when I attended a free class at my local library some 4 years ago. Your local library is a couponer/savers dream. Check it out! As couponers, the local library should be a must on your saving journey.

        • Sandy

My library requires people to prove residency in their coverage area in order to get a library card there. Maybe it varies by state?

          • Mindy

It varies from state to state and system to system. It also depends on how your library is funded. I worked at a city/county library once that was funded by the City and the county. If you live in the city or county, card is free. Live Anywhere else, you have to pay for the card. Library I work at now lets anyone have a card regardless of where they live.

We have Overdrive? I don’t know if it is the same thing? Through our library, we can get audiobooks, magazines, music, kindle books … Best. Thing. Ever. !!!

    • Melissa

Agreed! I love OverDrive! I paid for Audible for a few months and then found OverDrive. I check out audio books from my library. Love it!

    • Mindy

Overdrive is a different database and only has ebooks and audiobooks (and i love it). Hoopla has ebooks, audiobooks, music, graphic novels, and videos (movies and tv). Similar but has a wider variety of item types. Other common things at your library are freegal, which is free music and zinio which is free magazines. All very good!

  6. Just Me

I thought hoopla required internet i.e. It didn’t download to your system.

    • Michelle W

I was able to download movies to my iPad to watch while traveling. I love the old Disney movies they have such as Candleshoe, Happiest Millionier, Apple Dumpling gang etc.

    • Amy

you need internet to access it but you can download titles to your device. They will “return themselves” (i.e. delete themselves from your phone or iPad) once the time has passed.

    • Elaine

You can download the item to your device (at least for music). So it will use Internet to obtain item but won’t take data to play

  7. MaryAnn

My library has Freegal where you can stream unlimited music and allows five downloads a month. I’m loving it!

  8. Sandy

Thanks for posting this and for people’s comments about their experiences. I’ve been wanting to try it and just signed up. Can’t beat free rentals!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Sandy!

  9. Edub

I just downloaded it. Thanks. My library uses hoopla and one drive. I only knew about the one drive and am waiting for a couple of titles available now on hoopla. Awesome.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re very welcome!

  10. LL

It costs the library up to $15 per download or streaming so use it judiciously. I work at a public library so am aware of the pricing issues.

    • Sandy

      $15 is crazy!

    • Michelle W

That’s crazy! Our library provides it and has to close now two days a week due to money issues. I would rather have them open and them stop this service if it is that pricey!

  11. Julie

I am such a HUGE fan of public libraries. We simply could not afford our family’s voracious reading habit without! My daughter goes through entire novels in 1-2 days and my husband has a long commute so he goes through audiobooks at a lightening pace. My other kids and me are constantly borrowing reading material, cookbooks, picture books, novels, magazines, movies, audiobooks … Our library even has gaming systems you can check out as well as games! They have summer reading programs, concerts, used book sales, workshops, kids programs, story hour, a business center, resume and computer help … It’s all free to residents! Add to that the digital library (ours is called Overdrive) and I am NEVER without a good book. I can load a book right into my Kindle app whenever I need one!! Really strongly encourage you to see what resources your local library (or maybe even one in a neighboring town) has to offer! I ❤️my library!

  12. Deanna

    Thank you this is cool

    • Kimberly (Stylish Sidekick)

      You’re welcome Deanna!

  13. Alison

I love hoopla and overdrive. My library has both and they are awesome! Audible.com is so expensive and you get so little for it. I love it! I’d suggest talking to your local librarian to suggest they look into taking part of hoopla and see if you can get it. It’s amazing! Huge fan!

  14. Angie

I ❤️❤️❤️ hoopla. Been using it for about 2 years now

  15. J

I LOVE Hoopla!! It’s the best!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Glad to hear it! Thanks for the feedback!

  16. Rita Petko

I just got wind of this last week, and I plan on doing the registration.
    My sister-in -law uses ii

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

  17. Amy

Yay!!!! My library uses it tooooo!!! I never knew….I have been using Overdrive thru them for years but didn’t know about Hoopla! They allow 8 titles a month for us! (I’m in Jacksonville, Fl)

  18. Ru

I just downloaded Hoopla recently! It’s not bad but there’s no chapter menu for audiobooks. I started to bookmark frequently so in case the app shuts down and has to restart I don’t spend forever trying to find my place again. I also have OverDrive and OneClickDigital for audiobooks. Love all the free resources.

    • Christine

Ru- the hoopla app (at least for the iPhone, which is what I use) will automatically save your spot in the audiobook when you disconnect. I, too, used to bookmark and found out by accident one day that I didn’t have to when a call came in while I was listening. If using an iPhone you can minimize the app and check email, use web, play games, etc. while continuing to listen.

  19. Anna

We LOVE Hoopla at my house! Our preschoolers who can’t read yet love the audiobooks, especially.

  20. Anne Y

I fell in love with Hoopla a year or two ago. At first they didn’t offer this, at least not with Chromecast, but they later brought out the ability to stream Hoopla media (ie: TV shows and movies) to your TV. With Chromecast all I have to do is open up the app on my phone or tablet and open Chromecast on the TV. The digital quality is perfect from what I have experienced. Free rentals and the selection is almost endless. They are adding new content all of the time. My personal favorite are all of the audiobooks to choose from. I agree with your other readers….the Library is a great place to check out to help you live more frugally!!

  21. Brian

Hoopla, IndieFilms, and Zinio for Libraries are all great, FREE resources available to patrons of larger library systems. If you are unable to get them through your local library, try piggy-backing with a relative in a larger library system.

Military? With a CAAC card or DS Logon, you can access Zinio and Hoopla for free as well via Navy MWR Library. Navy MWR Library is open to all DoD members and their families, and provides a TON of free resources. I’ve been a user for several months – love the magazines and audiobooks!
