What's in Susan's Purse

Hi all!

I’m Susan, Collin & Bryn’s 60 something mother, and the proud of owner of a purse which I purchased three years ago at a local thrift shop.

Purse contents include Advil for aches & pains, tissues for a runny nose, and lip balm for chapped lips (three must-haves for the aging population). The deck of cards is for a quick game of “War” when out and about at a restaurant with the grandkids. Breath mints and dental floss always come in handy  – particularly as pieces of food find new places to get stuck due to receding gums. I also proudly carry a gun.

Family Picture (My mom, my sisters and me!)

But check it out! My purse is devoid of PMS products and makeup. I’m off the emotional roller coaster and now dress primarily for comfort and convenience!

Feeling sorry for me at my advanced age?! Don’t bother. Life is good – no, it’s great! – as I cherish my time with family and friends and work at challenging myself physically and intellectually.

My mom

I snagged my mom a nightgown for $1.99 at Sears back in 2015! To show her thanks, she texted me this pic. Gotta love her! 😘

NOTE from Collin: Please keep the comments nice as I know many of you feel strongly about gun control. You can definitely share your opinion, but let’s be respectful of one another.

Stay tuned for more “What’s in My Purse?” posts. The whole Hip2Save team will each be taking a turn to share the little treasures inside their bags!

I want to know where the cell phone and the coupons are!!!??? I would be lost without either in my purse.

  3. Sara

    Sweet Gun!

  4. Collanda

Susan, I just love you!!! I didn’t even know you carried a purse!!! Lol. It was fun to see what you had inside😜😘

I love this site. And I love the post. I don’t love the gun. I understand it’s her choice and she means well but I don’t agree. But I guess I’m in the minority here. I hope she never has to use it and that it never causes any unintended harm.

    • Faith

I appreciate you being so respectful, Alli. I’m on the pro-gun side, don’t carry myself (although may at some point), and always appreciate the right to a different opinion. I agree with your hopes!

    • Bobbie

I agree with your post a 100% Alli!

Atta girl! Add all the make-up and junk back in there and that could be MY purse! Just got my conceal and carry license last year.

My husband took my 29.,and 24 to teach how to use a weapon and they got there permit to carry! I feel like I’m too old for that but, I just asked my husband go with me to learn to use one, I had my car window broke into last week ! I’m a cancer survivor and just started taking a cross fit class where my car window got broke into , and since there is nothing but lady’s in the class , I’m worried now about someone coming in to the place , I was totally against this but, my also my house got shot at several yrs ago, good thing my daughter didn’t get hit bullets went through her window , cops came in and did their investigation came back after a week said, some kids had got into a argument about 10 blocks and they were the same people. Nothing to do with us – thank you Collin and team for everything

I understand having weapons secured in your house. But where’s a 60+ year old woman frequenting that she needs a gun at the ready. I’d be afraid that a grandchild would get to it and shoot themselves or another child/adult.

You don’t have to go anywhere, the world is full of sick people. If that poor jogger from the Bronx had been carrying she might have saved herself from that sick man. Yes there is always the what ifs, but I’m sure anyone that carries is well educated. My husband carries everywhere we go, and I’m thankful for that. If needed be could protect our family. He doesn’t leave it loaded, EVER.

But, what good is an unloaded gun? Heard a story about a cop stopping an old lady. When he found out she had a gun, he asked her what she was afraid of. Her reply? “Not a d*** thing.”

I love that you’re mom carries a gun. I made this same choice a few years ago after a drunk guy tried to mug me and get into my minivan with my two daughters. One of the scariest moments of my life. Awesome job showing a proud gun owner!!

*Your not you’re….ugh I hate autocorrect making me look stupid.

  11. Erica

    Love the nightgown

  12. Kelly

I really love that purse. Thrift store finds are the best! I also love your positive attitude about aging. Our society fears growing old, but as you point out, there are many benefits and much fun to be had!

  13. Cookieboots

I have a dozen years on you, but wouldn’t be caught without my cell phone. Taking care of myself is important to me, and I don’t think you should be without a phone. Also, I think your grandchildren would be safer with you carrying a phone than a gun. Please think of what could happen with misuse of either item by the children: a large utility bill vs. a wounded (or worse God forbid) precious life.

  14. Laurie

Way to go Susan! I have my concealed carry permit also and would like to get a little one like you have. Would you mind telling me what is the make and model?

    • Ns55

Good for you Laurie!! I totally agree. It’s perfect size!! We recently purchased a rifle for home protection. I have a FOID card but haven’t done conceal carry yet. But I’m going to. I have 5 kids. Just need to be smart about it. I’m out with all of them alone quite often as my husband is a fireman. Protection is a must in today’s world (unfortunately). People can have their opinions. It’s not for everybody but it’s for me!!

  15. Kat

Love this! Thanks for sharing ladies!!!

  16. Vivian

Super interesting reading about all of everyone’s take on this. I personally would be too scared especially with two little ones at home. But I do appreciate the honesty of posting such a controversial topic and that’s why I like this site! It’s so much more then just a coupon blog!!!

  17. Maite

I just want to say that your mom is a badass!!!! Way to go Collins mom 😜. Your mom looks like she’s enjoying her life to the fullest!

  18. Carol

Nice to ‘meet’ mom – such a beautiful family!

  19. rama revan

Hats off to you Susan, for being proud of your age! You look great and definitely do not need any make-up! And you must be proud of your daughters; please give yourself a pat on your back for raising them well!
