Definitely can’t go wrong with wine ever. I think very nice kitchen towels are also appreciated. A Groupon for Dinner is really nice also. An essential oil spa aromatherapy machine or mist thing is also really nice Plants are okay but have to be taken care of.

Many people are not wine drinkers. We were stuck with more bottles than I could make sauces and gravies out of …. Gave some away… threw some out.

      • soapboxtray

Agree! Would rather have a basket of fruit or gift card for Bed Bath Beyond or Grocery Store 🙂

        • Melloddie

Yep. We’re a non wine drinking family. I guess maybe use it for cooking if possible, otherwise it just be a waste

    • Erin

Depends on whether the recipient is hosting a party/open house and how well you know them. If you don’t know them all that well and they are hosting a get together, I’d avoid wine because they’ll probably get a ton. If the recipient is not local and you are, maybe a gift card to a good local restaurant (or nearby grocery store) with a mini binder filled with local takeout menus. I always like to receive things that I don’t buy myself, so fancy hand soap for the kitchen and bathroom or fresh flowers are nice. For established adults, I’d avoid anything that creates work for them (high-maintenance plants), potential clutter (knickknacks, decor), and allergens (strongly scented air fresheners, candles, diffusers), so consumables like a small gift basket of local items like honey, tea blends, coffees, etc. might be nice.

    • Mary

Not to be a negative nancy, but you can go wrong with wine as in giving it to a recovering alcoholic.

      • Bethany

Lol yes and many people are allergic to sulfites in wine. Best to avoid food/drink unless you KNOW the person uses it.

    • RZ

I always find it funny when people automatically assume that everyone consumes alcohol. People may have personal or religious reasons for not drinking (for example, Muslims cannot consume alcohol). Others may not be able to drink due to pregnancy or some kind of medical condition (even recovering from addiction) that you may not know about. Wine is not a thoughtful or considerate gift for so many reasons.

  2. meg

A bottle of wine and a gift card to a great local restaurant!

  3. Pharmchick

Gift cards to are usually our mainstays.. Best to let the receiver get whatever they need or want!

  4. Erin

I’ve given personalized address stampers before and they were very well received!!

    • Michelle

      Awesome idea!

    • Mel

I’ve given those before too & the recipients loved them. Personal Creations website also has some great personalized gifts that I have been very pleased with (look for coupon codes!). My favorite gift that I received was my Dyson vacuum cleaner!

    • StephB

Just gave a personalized stamper and glass Tupperware to a dear friends and they loved it!!

    • Misty

      Awesome idea.

  5. Karen

I always get great deals from dollar general 50%-80% off on their seasonal stuff (summer and spring) and make gift baskets using those items.

  6. Charlotte

If it is summer, things like bee spray or items to get rid of pests, especially if the house has been sitting empty for any length of time. Of course add other cute items to the basket.

Also if it is a new neighborhood, create a notebook or binder with a map, menus from local restaurants and a list from the city’s website of their annual events.

If the people have a good sense of humor and are planning to do renovations, I include the movie “The Money Pit”.

    • Rebecca

Love that movie! Tom Hanks, in the floor, that laugh. The best!

  7. Lana

New kitchen towels are always wonderful since you hardly want to use old ones in your new home. A Lowe’s or Home Depot gift card would be wonderful for all those little things you need to set up housekeeping.. For years we received a bottle of wine from our neighbors every Christmas and we are not wine drinkers. Then we wondered what to to do with it so it is best to know before gifting wine.

    • Amy

I agree on that if you are not close enough to them to know if they drink wine. My mom and my sister and her husband always end up regifting their wine gifts to me, which I don’t mind a bit since I love it. But it always makes me feel bad that people keep giving them wine.

  8. Al

I love everything Bath & Body Works so a candle or some hand soaps is what I typically go to. I know not everyone burns candles, but who doesn’t use soap? Gift cards are always nice, and anything personalized for their new home.

  9. Amy

When we bought our current home a few of our neighbors gave us a gift card to a great local pizza place that delivers to us. We weren’t very familiar with the area so that ended up being helpful and our favorite one!

  10. Rebekkah

A gift basket of higher end cleaning supplies is a great gift if the house has been empty for a while. I usually put together a gift basket that is a laundry basket or mop bucket full of paper towels, dish soap, all purpose cleaner, bleach wipes, sponges, . . . It’s one of those gifts that can be used right away or throughout the first few months.

  11. K

I always use Hip2save to stock up on cleaning supplies. When ever a friend moves into a new place I put together a basket of home supplies, sponges, Lysol, dish soap, hand soap, dish towels and so on. My friends have always really appreciated it and it doesn’t cost me much.

    • Jeffy

This is my favorite idea <3 stuff they will actually use

  12. Hema

I gave family free photo frame…really the liked it…☺😊

  13. auntyx2

I try and do a laundry basket with all the basics broom, mop, or swiffer, toiletpaper, laundrysoap, cleaning products ect… usually they love it because its not things people think about needing until you actually go for it

  14. Barbi Lashinsky

A small fire extinguisher, Not many people have one, but it is something all homes should not be without. A small one goes for about $20.00 on Amazon. I add a tag that states, “Hoping you will add this to the list of gifts…. you will never use.”

    • amy

Oh, Barbi, I love that idea!!! Thank you! Definitely what I’m doing from now on! It’s so important to have.

    • Melissa

That is such a great idea! I certainly did not think about having one when I moved into my house. Boy, was I glad my landlord left one underneath the kitchen sink though when my boyfriend caught the toaster oven on fire! I wish I could find that idea on Pintrest. Otherwise I’m going to forget all about that gift idea.

  15. Emily

If you are a neighbor, when they’re moving in, bring them dinner. That was by far, my favorite gift. Our neighbor stopped over while we were unloading the truck to state that she and her husband wanted to bring us dinner. She confirmed a time, asked if we ate what she was planning to make, and brought it over on-time. They stayed to chat with us and gave us a list of home improvement people they’ve tried and trusted. It was even in throw out containers, so we didn’t have to worry about washing dishes and remembering which house down the street was theirs. It was the best welcome gift to our community and we absolutely loved it.

Another great gift would be to put together a welcome to the neighborhood binder that has all the take-out menus, list of your favorite repair people, your phone numbers and addresses (names of your kids, etc.) If you want to include a monetary portion to that you can give a gift certificate to your favorite place or coupons that you have for them.

For friends, family, co-workers that you want to go over to their house to see it or at a party, etc.. Things that I’ve found to be great gifts are new smoke detectors and batteries. If they’re just starting out – all the cleaning supplies they’ll need in a laundry basket. Gift cards to home Depot, Target, Lowes or a great local restaurant always make great gifts.

  16. Queenmum

I always keep a Williams Sonoma Kitchen Essentials kit on hand. It has a dish soap, counter spray, and a hand soap. $20 (or less w a code) and it comes in several scents. The box it comes in is beautiful and it makes a great housewarming or welcome to the neighborhood gift 🙂

  17. Sue

I went craftefamily.com as recommended by Stacy earlier. They have an awesome wood perpetual wall calender with unique additions to personalize. A busy growing family would get a lot of use. Other cute ideas but that was something I’ve not seen in years. Good price I thought.

  18. Amanda H

We are a military family so whenever we have a friend move to our base I make a small basket of things that they might need when they move into a house. Some of the things I include are: Tide Pods (like the 4 or 5 pack you get in the travel aisle), a few dishwasher pods, sponges, a roll of paper towels, a small pack of toilet paper, dish soap, hand soap, a hand towel, a pot holder, a candle, and wine and a wine opener (if they are drinkers, if they aren’t then I will make cookies). These are all things that can be easily forgotten when moving into a new house and I hope are helpful. I try to put it in a laundry basket that I picked up at the $1 store.

  19. Steph

We moved in in September last year and one gift I received was Halloween theme wreath, hand made by my aunt! I love it and will use it every Halloween season and will always be reminded of her and the first months in our new house!

  20. beverlyguywriter

The traditional housewarming gift in my family is a roll of toilet paper, and I usually pair it with an air freshener (purchased or a simple homemade gel version) and a scented candle.

  21. Ma

The WORST gift was a knife set that was engraved with my realtor’s marketing info…not our name or purchase date. I thought it was tacky.
The BEST gifts were hardware/grocery/supercenter gift cards. Also, a neighbor gave us a nice basket that included: a note, dish towel, sponge, snacks, etc. Then, the 2nd neighbor gave my kids beach pals full with paper, crayons, bubbles & sidewalk chalk. We were very appreciative.

  22. Happymama

I don’t know if they still offer it, but there was a “Welcome Wagon” that I singed up for when we moved into our new home. It was great! There were Lowe’s coupons, info about the neighborhood, an address book with pre-pirinted addresses with important phone number like local police, and much more! It was free…I hope they still offer it!

  23. Urvi

Shutterfly does beautiful luggage tags. I attached them to my housewarming gift (new address, of course) instead of a gift tag. The recipients were charmed.

  24. Beth

I give and pretty journal and a matching pen so that they can write all their new memories down.

  25. Dee

A meal preparred or a gift card to a local resteraunt. These were a few of my favorites.

  26. Melissa Rice

I always do glade wax melt warmers or glade automatic sprays with a couple of extra wax melts / spray refills. Of course, if I know my friends are not allergic to smells. I always have a couple of them in my gift closet. I buy them using glade coupons and Ibotta rebates. These gifts are very often appreciated as some of my friends are busy moms and do not have the time to go around and shop for home decors .

  27. Angie

I love unique bottles, and when I found Mix Party with flavored EVOo, flavored balsamic vinegars, and wine liquor that you could choose your choice of whimsical or chic bottle, I couldn’t get enough!!

  28. momminukes

I like to give a personalized welcome mat for housewarming or for friends who have done huge renovations.

  29. Sondra L.

I like giving a custom scented soap basket! Who doesn’t need soap?!

  30. VERONICA FRANCOIS

I am a REALTOR and recently I came across personalization.com and have since been getting bamboo popcorn bowls personalized with my clients name and the slogan,” Popping up memories” on the bowl under their names and then filling it with about 5 jumbo bags of prepopped popcorn, movie theater candy and other things that would be used for a movie night. It has been a great hit with my clients.

  31. Shannon

I love to give Hallmark ornaments for housewarming (New home ornament) and wedding gifts.
