Own a front-loading washing machine? READ THIS!

Do you own a Whirlpool, Kenmore or Maytag front-loading washing machine that was manufactured between 2001 and 2011? If so, you may be entitled to a cash settlement or other compensation.

Apparently, certain front-loading Whirlpool, Kenmore and Maytag washing machines do not properly self-clean and end up having a build-up of laundry residue which results in mold and mildew that causes bad odors, and can potentially ruin laundry. For more information, go here.

Washing MachineIf you think you may qualify for compensation, head over here to see if your washing machine is part of the settlement. If you do qualify for compensation, head here to file your claim online or call 1-844-824-5781. Claim forms and documentation must be received by October 11th, so don’t delay.

Nope- even worse I own one of the Samsung models that has been exploding! (Just hit the news in the last day or so). Samsung hasn’t announced announced what they’re going to do about those yet.

    • Laura

      What?! Exploding?

      • Jen

        It’s a top loader washer

    • Jen

I have a Samsung set too and all kitchen appliances, I hate them all.

      • Ma

I agree. I have their kitchen suite for less than a year. The stove & dishwasher has already given me problems.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh darn! 🙁 Sorry to hear about that!

    • Kylie

I had a samsung dryer 13 months old and the drum cracked it went thump thump thump as it turned. I guess it is a frequent problem. The drum costs more to replace then the entire dryer did new. What a pain. For a replacement I bought a maytag cabrio, super neat o dryer. it has such a large opening. I can get anything in it. Even the largest comforter. I always win the lottery on junky things, my first microwave lasted 15 years the replacement lasted 6 mo. The replacements replacement lasted 3 months. Same with every new car I buy something goes wrong. We were out one weekend rainy and the wipers quit working. It was a new car with maybe 5,000 miles on it. My last smart phone I had to use speaker phone all the time because the microphone broke after 2 months. If you want to know what not to buy just ask me. Good luck on getting your washers fixed.

  2. April

I wonder if the compensation would include purchasing a replacement/new machine now or does it have to be purchased before this lawsuit came out

    • Juli

If you qualify, its $50 or a 20% coupon towards a new one. Or submit receipts for repairs.

  3. Lynsi

I have a frigidaire one with the same problem. I wonder if that brand is included?

    • Vicki

I also have a Frigidaire w/ the same problem.

    • Melissa

Me too! I HATE my Frigidaire and can’t wait to get a new washer

    • Rachel

Yes! We bought our frigidaire set in 2007 and it is so disgusting. We have already complained to the company and replaced the nasty rubber gasket once. Now it is mildewed and disgusting again. It is against my principles to replace an appliance that still works, but I truly don’t think it gets our clothes clean. It’s a top loader for me next time around!!

    • Diane

Yes, I agree! I had a Frigidaire front- loading washer a few years ago, and it was the worst washer I’ve ever owned. I replaced it with a Kenmore top-loading machine after a couple of years, and this one works just fine.

  4. Tasha

I knew it! Thank you so much! I’ve used bleach and washer cleaners and it keeps coming back. I always leave the door open but that mildew smell doesn’t go away.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Tasha!

    • Tracy

Agreed!! I have that same problem to the point that I rewash over and over and over!! So frustrating! Thanks Colleen!

  5. rn30032

I have my parents old Kenmore set, from Sears that they got when I was 5yo and I am now 37yo…works like a charm!! No smells just clean clothes

    • Laura

Gotta love the old machines- they don’t make them like they used to

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Wow! That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing!

    • krystal

My baby gift from my father with my first daughter was a washer and dryer, (in our first house) the old “cheap” style. 3 kids later I coveted the high tech big front loading machines and was so excited to receive a set from my in laws when they upgraded (they do ever 2 years or so). So happy I never got around to getting rid of our old set. Front load washer had to be cleaned nearly with every wash and if clothes sat in it for an hour after the cycle was complete it had to be rerun or the musty smell was horrifying and the bounced around so much they were the loudest thing in the house! So happy to go back to my old set, I will use them until they die!

  6. SharonI

I have the same issue with my LG front loader washer. It was disgusting to see the inside of the rubber seal at the door. I wish they would include ALL front loaders because they all have that issue…. 🙁

    • Emily

I have an lg front loader. Now that i wash at least 2 loads a day it never smells. I add borax to my sheets and towels loads and i always pour it in the seal area. I also leave the door open when it’s not in use. No stinky smells ever.

    • brdavis55

I make it a point on my LG front loader (which I love) to take a fiber rag & wipe dry the glass door & inside the rubber seal then I leave the door open over night & I never have a smell. Just a little tlc.

    • Jess

Most people use too much detergent. You should only be using 1 to 2 Tablespoons per load. Over time the excess detergent build up in the tub and is a breeding ground for the stink! If you look inside the tub there are 3 baffles (If your LG is like mine, which is 7 years old). Take a flashlight and a Phillips screwdriver and remove the single screw from the top rear of each baffle. The baffle should slide forward and off. Take a look inside…..mine was DISGUSTING!! Clean them and put them back in. It’s also a good idea to run the “tub clean” cycle once a month or so. I always add a hefty glug of vinegar when I clean mine. Try it. It might surprise you!

  7. Luna

Oh no we bought it last year, anyone having this sort of worry about the new too?

  8. Pat

I grew up with those front loaders in Germany (they have never had top loaders like the US) and I hated them. I still hate them now as an adult. They always took to long to wash and you couldn’t open them and put more in if you found more clothes under a bed. LOL They cost way more over here than they ever did in Germany too so not sure why that is the case. I will stick with my old ones that I got used for $25 10 years ago and it is still going strong. They actually used metal parts in the old machines so they last longer….. But again that is my opinion.

    • Lady

Yes, you can open them and add more clothes after it starts up. Just hit the pause button and wait for it to open. Throw them in and start it back up.

Leave the door open on front loaders and run the affresh tablets in the washer every month or two and you won’t have a smelly washer!
Also if it’s a LG or Samsung drain the tube that’s at the front bottom left of the machine when you do the clean washer cycle.

  9. Peavey

Top load water saver ones are just as bad. Leaves horrible residue on clothes all the time. Have to rinse and rerinse. I wonder if my clothes are ever really clean. So frustrating!!

    • Kylie

I don’t like mine either. Half the time my clothes still have visible filth on them. I dry dirty clothes. Its gross. This wayer saving thing is a joke if you live in Ohio. Give me a washer that actually cleans. Water saving here is like sand saving in the desert.

  10. Tracy

I have a 2-year old Maytag Bravos HE toploader. Terrible. It only worked well for one year (til the warranty expired). Now my clothes sometimes don’t even get wet during the wash cycle. The tub smells and the machine won’t go through the self-clean cycle. Recently I spent 2 hours filling the tub with 30 gallons of near-boiling water and vinegar. Two weeks later, the smell is returning.

  11. Jennifer

I have one of the Whirlpool units listed and the mold issue with those units are bad. After having this unit, I will not buy another Whirlpool unit. I have to keep the door open all the time and clean the boot all the time just to keep it at bay.

    • Elisa

I have an LG front loader and i have the same problem, i never close it and i always wipe down the rubber seal around the opening. I also tried to put a towel soaked with bleach there to get rid of the mold but it still comes back. Its terrible.

      • Jess

  12. mmisty baldwin

I keep the washer door open between uses so that the gasket and interior can dry out, seems to solve the problem.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the tip! Good to know!

    • Susie

That’s actually what the appliance salesman at Lowes told me to do when I bought a top loader. He said all HE machines have that problem. Keeping it open works.

      • Marie

        Same here!

  13. julie

We had a whirlpool duet and everything stunk coming out of that thing. Finally ditched it last year after dealing with it for 9 years. Too bad we didn’t wait a little longer.

    • kabo

I have a whirlpool duet too and with all the servicing I’ve had to have done to it, it’s pretty much a brand new machine, but I do get the mildew that I’m always having to wipe down too even after using the clean washer cycle. I’ll probably go with the $50 since pretty much all the components are brand new at this point!

  14. m

my inlaws have one of these and they are gross. when i used it i would add tea tree oil with the soap. it helps with the funk, its antibacterial and left the clothes minty smelling and the machine less rancid

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh cool! Thanks for the suggestion! Glad to hear that helped!

      • Randy

The phone number is wrong. It is 1-844-824-5781

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the heads up Randy! I am seeing that now as well!

    • Su

Thanks for the tea tree oil suggestion, can’t wait to try it.

  15. Melissa

Anyone know of a GOOD washer? That can actually be bought at a store now?

    • Emily

I have the same question. We are shopping for a new washer/dryer and fridge and looking good for recommendations! Any help is greatly appreciated!

      • Emily

Our frigidaire french door refrigerator with ice/water dispenser has been a complete nightmare. The repair guys know me by name.

      • Jay

Do NOT buy frigidaire refrigerators NO MATTER what the deal/sale is. Don’t even take one for free lol
I’m an appliance manager so I deal with this stuff daily and they are the worst brand of refrigerators.
LG washers and dryers are usually always top rated. We have the least amount of problems with them. They’re my favorite.

      • brdavis55

I absolutely love my LG refrigerator. It is the French top doors with the middle refrigerator drawer (I use for things I use 2-3 X’s a day) & the bottom is the freezer.

        • Emily

Thank you all for the great tips! I greatly appreciate it. Does anyone know how GE appliances are generally?

          • Jay

GE is good. Their washers are hit and miss. I would buy their kitchen appliances just not laundry.

    • Danielle

We just bought a top load speed queen a few months ago and I have been very happy so far. I do a lot of laundry with 7 kids and it has performed really well, has an amazing warranty, I think it is 15 years for the motor, metal parts so there isn’t the smell issue. The only thing they told us is never use the economy wash. That is the water saver setting and won’t get the clothes clean. The rest of the washes are not water saver and fill all the way to the top. Oh and don’t go with the base model. Just an FYI, I was hoping to find a sale for one but they said the price is fixed by manufacturer so they don’t do sales on these. We did pay cash and got free delivery and set up for paying cash. One place would have given a tiny discount for the cash but it wasn’t a close store and was less than delivery fees.

  16. Lindak

We have a maytag that falls into this group. My husband took most of it apart after watching utube videos and cleaned out a gross part where the water and lint accumulates. That took care of the odor which smelled like a sewer. It really should be done often but it is difficult snd time consuming. Very poor design!

    • Paula

We had a service repair man that showed us how to clean that part. It had a baby sock and lots or lint in it and it smelled horrible! He said that they call it moon juice, because it smells like nothing here on earth!
Very important to keep it clean. But like you said it is not easy to get to and poorly designed.

  17. Angela V.

Thank you! We have a Whirlpool duet that qualifies. The washer runs great but the smell is terrible! I would love to get a new one but it’s just not in our budget right now.

    • April

Yes, we ordered a new gasket and hubby replaced it. It was A PAIN!!! We are way more conscious at leaving door open and wiping down but living in FL this new gasket is starting to mildew too. $50 rebate won’t cover it….just need a whole new machine 😕

  18. Meredith

Thank you! We have a one that qualifies and we’ve had tons of problems with. We really need to replace so I’m wanting to ask for the rebate, but am wondering about timeline of when it can be used. Does anyone know how long the offer will be good for? Or if it matters where we buy it from?

  19. Gina

I had an LG front load that was great, but our whirlpool front load is terrible. I was always told to use the powder detergent bc it doesn’t gunk up the machine. Seems to work wel when we had the LG. I don’t think anything will bring the whirlpool back from smelling (it came with the house when we settled).

  20. Natasha

I had a whirlpool duet but I couldn’t get past the funky smell so I got rid of it last year. Do you think I still qualify I had to buy a new machine?

  21. Randy

The number to contact them is actually 1-844-824-5781

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Thanks! Just updated!

  22. M

My husband is an appliance tech and often notes that people use too much detergent which causes problems in front loaders. Also, using three pods of the cleaners will usually reduce the build up. He often goes to homes & helps people just follow their manual 😂

    • Jess

You are absolutely right! A few years ago I was having issues with my LG. The repairman told me to only use a Tablespoon or 2 of the detergent. He showed me how to take out the pieces inside the tub that agitate the clothes (don’t know the name of them….baffles?). Remove the one screw and slide them out (3 of them). It was so disgusting the amount of detergent that had built up inside of them. I now use max of 2 Tbs of detergent and use vinegar to help keep the mildew down. I haven’t had the issues since.

  23. Erin

Thanks! I went for the 20% rebate, because I’m thinking my 15 year old set may not last much longer

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Erin!

  24. rebeccandkiki

Wish my LG was included! I always leave the door open, wipe it down after using, run the washer tabs in it regularly, & drain the front drain thing after I’m done washing for the day, but it still stinks!!!! Have been dealing with this smell for years!!! I thought I was nuts! Glad to know it’s not just me! Buy gees can’t really afford to buy another washer after blowing $800 on this one 5yrs ago! I wish mine would blow up like the Samsung ‘ s are! Lol. 😲😠😢👃

    • Jess

Most people use too much detergent. You should only be using 1 to 2 Tablespoons per load. Over time the excess detergent build up in the tub and is a breeding ground for the stink! 25. Mella

Bought a top loader Whirlpool set from Lowes 2 years ago. It has an agitator. Love it! No issues yet. Wasn’t too expensive either.

  26. Nicole

Thank you so much for posting this!! I thought I was going crazy smelling mildew on my clothes that I just washed! I have been using Borax in all my loads which seems to help neutralize odors. I will using my 20% rebate (hopefully) to purchase a new one!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re so welcome Nicole!

  27. Suzy

I have the Whirlpool Duet set I bought back in 2002. I keep the door ajar after use to stop the moldy smell and don’t have any problems. I wipe the boot gasket off at least once per week, and yes it is nasty, but I don’t have any moldy smelling issues anymore since I began doing that.. It’s only two of us so we don’t use it much and I don’t leave clothes in it to come back to later. I also use the tide washing machine cleaner every 2 or three months.

It seems to me the claims work will cost more in time and effort than the $50 you get back. Even a 5% back might be helpful but I am sure they will include a stipulation that you can’t buy it on sale and still get the 5% back too. My thoughts on that subject anyway.

  28. Jennifer

did anyone actually receive the $50 refund yet? I submitted mine on the day before the deadline, but that was months ago and I haven’t received anything, not a check or a letter or anything. Starting to doubt I’ll ever see that $50.

  29. Terry

The following info was just posted at the settlement website over President’s Day Weekend:
“We anticipate the distribution of settlement benefits for timely and valid claim form submissions will begin between mid-March and early April, and will continue on a rolling basis.”
