Ingredients

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened (no substitutes)
  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (*optional, but yummy!)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

2

With an electric mixer or hand mixer, cream butter and sugar.

3

Add egg and blend well.

4

Add extracts and blend.

5

Mix salt and flour together – gradually add.

6

Knead into a ball.

7

Cover dough and chill dough for about 2 hours (this step is a must!!)

8

Working with about 1/3 of the batch at a time, briefly knead the chilled dough and roll about 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface.

9

Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes with the dough.

10

Cut the bottoms of the heart and place on parchment-lined baking trays, or silicone baking mats.

Rolled Cookie Dough Recipe Adapted from The Decorated Cookie.

Notes:

This recipe made about 20 medium-sized hearts for me. It will depend on how big your cookie cutter is and how thick you roll the dough. This dough can be made ahead of time and freezes well too. Also, Check out this royal icing recipe via Wilton.com that I’ve used on my Breast Cancer Awareness Cookies.

how-to-frost-a-boob-cookie

To get the sharp outline around the outside of my cookies, I’ve used a sugar cookie decorating technique called “flooding” where you outline the cookie in royal icing with a pastry bag and then fill in the middle with a watered down royal icing using a plastic squeeze bottle. To learn more about this method and the equipment needed, click here for a great tutorial.

I finished by using a dot of store bought pink Cake Writing Gel for the nipples! 😊

This is a fairly simple design that’s definitely achievable!

I tried and failed miserably at more detailed cookies that had super cute bra type embellishments, but I’ll leave those to the professional cookie decorators! Haha 😂

  1. Jenn

    I love this! Thank you!

  2. Michelle

I understand the sentiment here, and I appreciate all efforts to save lives, educate and prevent this awful disease. However, it’s not about saving breasts or boobies, it’s about saving lives. I’m not modest or prude, but cookies shaped like breasts make me cringe.

    • Jennine

In all fairness the post doesn’t say anything about saving breasts/boobies. It is about awareness of the awful disease.

    • Shannon

      I thought the same thing.

    • Jessica

      I agree

    • ilovehip2save

Yeah too much focused on boobs and not the actual life

    • DeanOC

I agree. For a disease that does a number on women’s self esteem when they have to “lose” their breasts I feel like too much of the awareness for this disease concentrates on boobs (or uses them as shock value to gain attention). We need to shift the way we do awareness and be a bit more compationate. Some women handle the process better but I personally know a few women who were completely devestated about needing mastecomys and all this “save the tatatas” stuff is cringe worthy.

    • MommySpendsLess

I agree. These seem more appropriate for a bachelor party than anything related to breast cancer. I was also a bit suprised to see these pop up as the main image on a Hip2Save post – it’s nothing that would shock or offend me almost anywhere else, just wasn’t expecting to scroll down and see it here. (Kind of like if I walked into Toys R Us and saw they’d added a power tools or a lingerie section)

    • amy

I am glad I’m not the only one that thinks these are distasteful. Sorry. I like the fact somone is trying to bring attention to cancer, I’m just not sure this is the best way.

    • Erin

      I agree.

  3. Sue

My sis-in-law loved it & she just finished chemo for breast cancer. I hope people will choose to bring awareness in whatever way brings the most meaning to them.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      That’s a very nice thought.

    • Laura

      Well said.

    • Sarah

Yes! It gets the conversation started!

  4. Mimi

🙄 I like how Michelle highlights that she’s not modest or prude but then states the opposite thereafter, lol! Love it Collin! It’s natural, it’s true, and it also affects men too. And it rhymes lol! I’ll definitely make these

    • Susie

Trust me, there’s nothing natural about breast cancer. Double Mastectomy

      • Laurie

        Hey Susie
Awareness is about what you and others go through, I agree, not about the “tattas”. Sorry you were offended by this. Pray you continue to be healthy an live with a merry heart. God Bless and Keep you and yours. Sorry for what is disease has done to your body, spirit and mind. May God restore all.

    • Rebecca

I kinda get where she’s coming from though. I am the least filtered person I know, can’t really think of anything at the moment that offends me. I just think there are better ways than baking cookies to look like tits lol.

      • Laura

        I agree

      • ilovehip2save

        Lol yes

    • Michelle

I can’t delete or edit my comment, so I will clarify. I don’t know anyone who is not aware of breast cancer, some very brutally aware. It probably shouldn’t matter to me that you think I contradicted myself, but I didn’t cringe for the reasons you are stating. Yes, breasts are natural and breast cancer affects more than just women. I think women should support each other and not tear each other down, and I think that everyone has the right to express their opinion, so I will not try to change anyone’s mind on this.

      • Ginger

I get it. I personally am not offended by the cookies, I’m sure everyone celebrates these things differently , and thats fine- but I think these cookies would be served at a bachelor party.

      • jac

Thanks for sharing your view, Michelle. Dealing w/ the trauma of disease by turning it into something cutesy might seem like a good idea, but it’s also helpful to hear how uncomfortable this might make someone. I recently read similar sentiments written by a woman who survived breast cancer here: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/lara-huffman/my-disease-isnt-a-cutesy-slogan_b_5853184.html I appreciated the insights she offered about her experience.

  5. Bea

I like the idea, but not the cookies 😐

  6. Katrina

The mammo-grahams crack me up! Lol

  7. Megan

    Embrace them
    They have penis chocolates
    Get real

  8. Leah

A way to do lacy patterns that doesn’t require skill is to buy stencils and edible spray and just spray paint the cookies over the stencil after the frosting has dried.

  9. Susie

Remember to get your mammograms ladies! A routine mammogram caught mine early, 7 years ago.

    • Susie

      ago

    • mom2boys

Huge congrats to you….it is you and all other SURVIVORS that I will be celebrating as I make these!!!!

  10. Laura

    Love these!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks Laura 😀

  11. Susie

    So funny! I love them

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks Susie ❤️

  12. Rebecca

I absolutely support awareness, encouraging people to get mammograms, etc. I just think it’s such a commercialized movement right now, even more so since they started with the “save the tatas” crap. Everywhere you go, you see people wearing pink. Please do your research in the Komen foundation & donate somewhere where your money won’t just be lining someone’s pocket. I would love to see more awareness for cancers equally or more common or deadly like prostate or colorectal.

    • Molly

👍 Agreed! Horrible disease but too commercialized and trendy to wear a pink ribbon. I wholeheartedly support and applauded those brave folks fighting to live! Too Many”foundations” making millions from this cause.
❤ And to those in the midst of this battle, keep fighting. ❤

    • meg

My mom..a 25 year breast cancer survivor wears her pink ribbons…her shirts…and everything else with pride. It’s all how you look at things. Everyone of course is entitled to their opionion…no reason for anyone to belittle or tear others down. Don’t like the pink stuff? Don’t like the cookies? Don’t wear or make em.

      • Rebecca

I was not belittling anyone or trying to offend, sorry if you took it like that. There’s nothing wrong with purchasing/wearing the pink items to show support, I was simply implying that it’s not the only way to donate, but it seems to be the only way most people know about. Your mother obviously wears her pink items as a badge of honor, as she should, and that’s great. I just wish people knew about other ways to donate, for breast cancer & other illnesses as well.

    • Anne

Anyone want to guess what the #1 cancer killer is???? Not Breast. Not prostate. Not colon. Not ovarian. Number 1 cancer killer? Lung cancer. And it’s not just for smokers. Kills more than ALL of those mentioned combined. More diagnoses occur these days in non-smokers. Yet the 1st question to a lung cancer patient? “Did you smoke?” Like it’s their fault. Whoever asks a breast cancer patient, “Did you wear a bra?” It would be nice to see the pink parade & research money going where the biggest killer is…..

      • Laura

I agree. My friends mom died of lung cancer. She never smoked. No one in her house smoked.
I’d like to see attention on cancer as a whole.

But if your fixated on breast, stop wearing reg antiperspirant. Research foods and personal care items that take on estrogens properties in your body. We ( I don’t anymore)eat and put these things on our body without a second thought about what it’s doing to us. Parabens are evil

    • Patricia Masonis

Just my opinion…educate yourself when deciding who and/or what to donate to. Choose what is important to you or has impacted “your” life or those that you love. I personally am a 2 time breast cancer survivor that donates my time and money to several different charities, not just breast. I love the cookies, but understand & respect why others don’t. Please do your self breast checks and consult your physician about when to have mammogram. Here is a very helpful sight for making donation decisions. Peace & love to all..

Haha Net Nanny blocked this from my computer! Gave me a laugh. Kuddos to Net nanny.

  14. J

While I appreciate the desire to bring awareness, I feel that the public awareness of the disease is sensationalized by the focus on the breasts. It’s about lives.

    • Nicole

      This!!

    • Lynn

I agree but I don’t know a woman alive who isn’t affected by losing one or both of her breasts by this awful disease. Like it or not, our breasts have defined us as women and yes, this is not the most important matter – a LIFE IS – but this is just a “fun” way to bring awareness. To each his own about this matter…just my opinion.

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

        Thanks Lynn!

  15. alyssa

Well, at age 34 I had breast cancer, I’m 50. I had a double mastectomy, those cookies are not offensive, they’re COOKIES. Glad to be alive, awareness, for fun, we all know.

    • Mel

      💗

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Thanks for stopping by and for your support. ❤️

  16. J

Where’s the recipe for the ones with chocolate chips instead? 😋

  17. Holly

Too cute! I remember all the controversy last year when these were posted. Love that they’re still being posted. Awareness is awareness. In other news, it’s been a year already!

  18. Edy

It will be my 2 yr that I , had a masectomity, I have one breast and Only , I received from my husband today the pink ribbon that , says survivor ! Do, only when the date comes, that , I had my masectomity October 16 , I get so emotional , I would use the idea of the cookies with the pink ribbon , but, not the breast ones , since it’s a emotional time for me, since, I can’t have the reconstructive surgery yet, 🎀🎀 after, I had the surgery didn’t even wanted the pink ribbon from the hospital ! Some of us can’t deal properly with this issue yet !! To everyone that’s dealing with the breast cancer God bless you and good luck !!

    • Mel

      💗

    • Cara

Sending you a gentle hug, Edy.

    • Laura

      Hugs 💕💕

      You’re alive!!! 😀😀😀😀😁

  19. Luz

Easy and cute! Thanks for the idea and recipe!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Sure Luz!

  20. Angie

What makes ME cringe is a recipe for sugar laden treats related to spreading cancer awareness & prevention. Sugar feeds cancer & it depresses the immune system. It’s like when McDonald’s & KFC sponsor cancer events & their food is not healthy for anyone let alone someone fighting for their life. FYI my son had cancer when he was 12 so I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone but we need to be aware of our nutrition choices. It’s one of the few things we really have a direct control of that has the power to either benefit us or cause harm to us. Educate educate educate. 💗

    • J.J.

Totally agree and with all the donations going to “research” you’d think we would have a cure or would be much closer.

  21. Sarah

Thanks! Although like everyone above, these cookies make me cringe (because I am a prude 😉 ) and I have a personal pet peeve about the “trend” of pink and Breast cancer awareness being “cool” but no one has a purple colored sporting event for all cancers or promotes awareness of the more rare cancers (my mom died of neuroendocrine carcinoma- the color is zebra print. She was even told during her battle that she couldn’t attend an event because it was only for breast cancer survivors) BUT, I am super grateful you shared your cookie recipe and icing, I can’t wait to try them in Halloween shapes. I love this site and you ladies work so hard, it’s nice you are thinking of those with this disease, I am glad they’ve come so far with research and most victims can survive. I hope they get that far with the other kinds as well.

    • meg

To some it’s not a trend or about being cool. My opinion

    • Beverly

I just attended the American Cancer Society’s Hope Club Relay For Life on October 1. It’s an annual event. It’s theme color was purple and it was for all cancers. You can google it for more info and to donate if you desire.

  22. JBH

Thank you, Lina. Love your posts!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks so much ❤️

  23. Melissa

Maybe it’s just me but they don’t look like breasts to me, more like a butt. They would make a funny “over the hill” cookie as a droopy butt. 😀

    • meg

Ha! People would be all butt hurt over that too though…lol

    • kristi s.

I’ve seen ones like these where they just frosted a little swimsuit bottom! They were cute!

  24. Bethany

As a CSA survivor of same sex abuse, the thought of putting breasts in my mouth makes me pretty nauseous. Blech.

  25. Mel

Thanks for sharing Lina. Those mammo-graham treats are so funny!

  26. Ns55

No- it’s not about the boobs. But think of this— people are influenced by everything from commercials to print ads to pop ups on phones etc. if we constantly put “boobs” into women’s brains- There’s the chance, that at least 1 woman will see a boob anything, whether it be a cookie, or bracelet or anything else (in this case a cookie) and it will make them think about their boobs and remind them they need a mammogram (that’s why the reference is always being made- boob=mammogram!! It’s just a cookie- some people need to calm down. I guarantee at least 1 person was reminded from this post, that their mammo is due- – and that 1 person is me. I’ll be 37 tomorrow and my appt is due every October so, Lina- thanks for a good laugh, -good treat and a good reminder. I’ll call Monday and schedule my appointment. Hip team/ keep up the good work. You guys are fierce!!

    • meg

      Love this!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks!

  27. Cait

I’m going through make these for myself and call them breastfeeding treat cookies.

  28. aq

Next month you can use chocolate sprinkles and wrinkle them for men’s health November…

  29. Beverly

Breast cancer sucks, as do all cancers. The treatment is ongoing and really hard. Statistics tell us that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer. The biggest risk factor: being female. Everything changes when you get cancer. Forever. It’s 9 months since my diagnosis. I’m a health nut with no family history of breast cancer. The last person in the world that you would think would get cancer. 1 in 8. Count your blessings that the grassroots movement to raise money for research has turned this disease from a mostly ignored and deadly one into a somewhat curable one. And keep Trump out of the Whitehouse or we lose Obamacare. Obamacare ended yearly and lifetime caps on health insurance, preventing me from going into medical bankruptcy due to my lifesaving treatment. You are only one diagnosis away from losing everything too.

    • amy

Obama care is not the answer! When you have to wait to get life saving procedures done you will understand. Tort reform is what is needed.

    • M.

Obamacare is why I don’t have health insurance for the first time in 20 years. I can’t afford it. He made healthcare free for everyone who was getting it free anyway and drove up the cost for everyone else.

      • Melissa

YES! I’m a SAHM and my husband is a teacher. Adding myself to my husband’s plan is outrageous, yet Obamacare is not any better! It is insane! I’m basically on a catastrophic plan (which is still several hundred a month) and God help us if anything happens to me.

  30. Sue

So what cookie ideas do you have for men’s prostate cancer ?

  31. Sandy

I can’t even take the comments about serving these at a bachelor party being in better taste than using them to bring awareness to breast diseases!?!?? Can you imagine if heart imagery could no longer symbolize heart disease because it was in poor taste?!?

The bachelor party comments—-Once again women, likely with breasts, suggesting objectifying women’s breasts. What isn’t degrading about serving these at a bachelor party?!?

This mentality is so ironic. Breasts are a body part. A precious and beautiful one that we nourish our children with. They, like the rest of our precious bodies, are susceptible to disease. We need to do whatever we can as women to de stigmatize these diseases that are killing our sisters.

Thank you for the post. Some people will like it, some won’t, but the bachelor party comments were the only offensive thing about this post in my humble opinion.

    • Chelwood

I so agree. I appreciate the post. If you don’t like the cookies, don’t make them. I don’t think Lina meant any harm by this post. She was showing ways to support Breast Cancer awareness. Thanks Lina.

  32. Wende

I was quite shocked by this post. My mom is fighting breast cancer right now. The very last thing we are thinking about is breasts/boobs. We can find better and more productive ways at sharing awareness and supporting those with cancer/survivors. I appreciate the recipe for sugar cookies but they will not be in the shape of breasts. Also it is more than just the mammogram. There are women with breast cancer that need assistance with finances, transportation to appointments, new clothing, assistance with household obligations.
