If you’re in the mood for a festive and easy Christmas craft, consider turning an ordinary wood log into a snowman or Santa using paint and a couple of winter accessories! The result is an adorable Christmas decoration to display in your home for years to come.

My friends and I recently got together to paint logs into cute snowmen after being inspired from this popular previous Hip2Save post!

What a fun and easy project. None of us had easy access to logs, but we’re able to pick up these already shaved ones from a local firewood and lumber yard. They are ponderosa pines, and measure 18-22 inches, about 7 inches wide. You could always adjust the size to your preference.

HipTip: Use snow hats and scarves you may already have on hand or look for some inexpensive ones at thrift stores to accessorize your snowman!

Santa Painted Log:

Directions:

Directions:

  1. Use a pencil to plan out space for face, beard, and body.
  2. Paint the top in a flesh color, the bottom in red, and then use a paint brush to fill in beard and bottom coat detail. I used the bottom of paint brush to tap the ends of beard so it looked like hair, and the bottom like fur.
  3. Paint and “stamp” face details using wine corks and a small paint brush, let dry.
  4. Add a Santa hat to the top. (I also used my daughter’s headband as a belt.)

    How much were the logs?

    • Emily

Also wondering how much logs like that cost! Cute project!!

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

        $10 – thanks!

Try old fence posts. I just took down 400 feet of wooden fence and replaced with a black aluminum. Call fence contractors/installers and ask for scraps from their jobs.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I’m sure it would vary by region, but I live where there are no pine trees and we paid $10 a log that came shaved.

So cute. I just don’t know the first thing about shaving logs.

These are so cute!โ™กโ™กโ™ก Especially since we can’t have real snowmen in Florida. Love them!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Exactly! Thanks Leslie ๐Ÿ˜Š

The dollar store usually had hats and scarves that would be great to use for this, too! I have used some in the past to do snowman wreaths that I personalized and gave as family Christmas gifts.

Hi Amy do you have a pic of your wreaths and some directions. If you could email me I’d appreciate it. I love Christmas wreaths melaniemavros at gmail dot com thank you

Hi! Super easy wreaths…I bought – grape vibe wreaths from the dollar store 3 different sizes. Smallest to largest, to make a snowmanโ˜บ I used floral wire to attach the wreaths together. Added a dollar store scarf and used recycled scrabble tiles to personalize with last name! I cut the scarf the long way in half and used one scarf for 2 snowman! It cost $3.50 per wreath and everyone loved them! Simple, cute and easy! Hope that helps! If add a picture but I have them all away! I bet if you Google, you could find one though.

      Sure- Thanks for reading Tonya!

You could decorate these with sports team apparel and they would be so cute! If you just buy the fabric, you could fashion a hat and scarf and it would be more affordable.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Love that idea! Cute

How super cute! I made these snowman kiddie treat cups for my son’s class a few years ago and thought they’d be great to up-cycle glass Glade jar candles (the bottom of the candle is a pain to remove, but I had luck putting the glasses in the freezer for a few hours and gently prying the metal from the bottom with a flat head screwdriver, then washing in hot soapy water to remove any wax residue) I fill them up with Hershey kisses or other small wrapped candies.

Where did y’all find the logs?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

We found ours at a local firewood lumber place ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. sue

Does it have to be ponderosa pine logs or could you use any kind of wood logs?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh ya I’m sure you could. I was just reporting back what kind ours were.๐Ÿ˜€
