I used to love toy clearance time. Anyone else feel like that the majority of toys are “junk toys” now? It seems like only a few of the toys are actually worth getting now. Sigh. Maybe I’m just getting old and boring. Or maybe it’s after Christmas blues seeing how many of my kids toys just sit around NOT getting played with.

    • Jodi

I am with you on the not being played with. I have several new toys that my daughter just had to have and they are already collecting dust on the floor in her room since Santa brought them. If i had all the money back on toys not played with i would have a lot of money. I am glad i have this site so i at least don’t have to spend full price on them!!!!

      • Amanda

I’m with you all on this. My daughter plays the most with her new Lego friends sets I got with SYW points I had to quickly use up. She didn’t even get these from Santa. Luckily she plays with most of her gifts. But there are also some that always get donated every year. At least they go to a good cause in the end.

    • Laura

I feel this way too! My 7 year old told me he was bored today. I wanted to rip my hair out.

    • Stephanie

We recently moved from California to Utah and our Target here has a horrible selection of clearance ANYTHING! But the toys are the most random, totally left over toys that no one wanted for Christmas. In California they had the best selection and had about 3 aisles of it! I am lucky to get 1/2 an aisle at my current one. Maybe I miss the “good toys” I am not sure but it is definitely different out here.

      • Kaela

Hi, I was surprised to see your comment because my family is moving from SAN Diego CA to st George UT! Hope my new target will be good!

    • Erin

Yup. My Richmond area stores aren’t nearly as well stocked as the one above appears to be, but it looks to be gimmicky stuff that I wouldn’t buy anyway. I did notice the dolls, though. In the past, there wasn’t as much flash-in-the-pan, character-themed, movie tie-in merchandise. What’s funny is that quite a bit of these toys (or better ones!) can be had cheaper before Christmas with Cartwheel and/or mobile coupons. I try to use those deals and promos for the good stuff that’s rarely discounted. That’s my new toy shopping strategy.

    • Brittany

Perhaps we should just give less toys and more memory type gifts – like tickets to go do something together 😉

    • Liz Ob

Here’s my penny’s worth. Please don’t get mad at me but…. I only got my kids about 7 gifts for the oldest. I have 3. 6, 2,year old. The 1 year old only got a couple cuz she plays with the other kids toys. It was light. They weren’t overwhelmed and they loved what they got. Blackhawks jersey, hockey stocks, cricket controlled car, stuffed animals, one lego set, crayola sprayer among them. Now I feel *don’t get mad at me* it is really up to the parents to teach these kids to appreciate what they have and guide their daily activities. I’m not saying I’m perfect. My kids have free play more often than I can guide them, I have to clean and cook. But they can’t concentrate on activities on their own and learn that there are worse things in the world other kids have to deal with. I often go through their rooms and have them bag things for donation but actually put it in the attic cuz they end up seeing it as new in a year. *make sure to remove batteries* please don’t criticize me , I criticize myself enough. Thanks you hip2save! I’ll be off to my target tomorrow!

      • Kerry

Love your comment, Liz Ob! Right on! Sometimes, because we get such great deals being “hip2save-rs”, we might overindulge our children/grands. It becomes overwhelming for everyone. Less can be more. Yay for you for being a great mom!

    • animity

I am with you, that is why this year I only bought what I thought would be creative brain toys. Something that makes them use their imaginations or crafty items. So far so good. Plus, I have read quite a few articles and books about kids and toys. Most kids get so overwhelmed with the amount of toys they have that they don’t know where to start. Downsize and only toys that will make them use their brains a little. No more crappy, plastic toys with batteries. A lot of decluttering of toys and being strategic about the ones that come out and ones that hide for a time.

  2. Grace

My Target was at 50% on toys, got a Lion Guard Leap n Roar Kion for $14.98.

ALSO, $10.09 total for 2 pairs of toddler girl C9 running shoes (DCPI 098072847 for size 10, 098072848 for size 11). They were on clearance for $7.48 (originally $24.99 and marked $17.48). What a happy surprise when I scanned them and they were $10 cheaper than marked! 2 pairs came to a grand total of $10.09 after the B1G1 50% off and 10% cartwheel.

    • Sharee

Thank you for posting about the toddler shoes! I was able to get 4 pairs (size 10 and 11) for my twin girls for $20! I really appreciate you including the DCPI numbers so I knew which store to call. Thanks again!!

  3. circumspect41

I’m heading to Target right after work (45 minutes) hope they still have some of the inventory that is showing at my store. One bonus to having a child right after Christmas!!!

  4. Heather

I drove an hour today to our local Target and stumbled across severalllll toys marked down…snagged a few for Easter gifts 🐰. Ever after dolls, monster dolls, a few Disney toys – I got 70% off. Score!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

That’s awesome to hear Heather! Thanks for sharing your finds!

  5. Alex

Anyone see any our generation stuff on clearance?

    • Grace

I did see a few OG dolls on clearance at the Mosaic Target in VA today.

    • barbara

Brandon, FL our generation south store had holiday set dolls for 24.98

    • Kimvs

The bike was$12 in so cal.

  6. Judy Trac

    Got some for my nephew

  7. ResseCup

Wonder of those giant ninja turtles are marked down as well. Stopped by Monday night and they were still $49.99😩

    • That Saving Mama

Those things were $20 down here in Georgia before Christmas. My neighbor bought 2 for her nephews.

    • Christine

I would check! $29.99 in NH

    • Erin

Richmond had a *ton*! And the Star Wars ones.

  8. Steph

Your target clearance is so pretty! My stores I shop are never this organized!! I am a little jealous😜

  9. Lisa

I bought the Cayla party doll when there was a 50% cartwheel and $10 off toy coupon. I ended up returning it after reading online there are lawsuits pending on this doll due to it being able to spy. I don’t really remember the details. I thought it was just a doll but it apparently has technology that listens and talks to your child making it interactive. I believe the lawsuit claims the information isn’t protected. It might be something you want to google prior to buying the doll.

  10. Kate

I wrote a big nite to myself & put it at the top of the stocking box that said “the kids only used 4 or 5 toys last year, only buy 4-5 & save $ as well as making thoes things special!” and another note in the nativity set box “Christmas is about family & love NOT gimme gimme” maybe I will listen 2 myself!

    • Amanda M

Same, most of the things I got my 3 girls, were experiences, tickets to Aladdin on Broadway for my 10 year old, Sesame Place tickets for my little ones. Movie tickets, build a bear, stuff that got us spending time together. Have to say it was so much better, meaningful and less chaotic although they still got way to many toys from grandparents, aunts etc I kept my sanity!

  11. Ursula

I’m still recovering from all of my Target 90% of shopping. At least we are going to be snowed in here in Virginia Beach. I will have to stay home. Oh wait. There’s the internet. 😜

    • NavyMom

Haha. Possibly be snowed in. I’m not seeing anything over here in North Suffolk, yet.

      • Ursula

        Just a little snow ❄️😜

  12. Nicole j

Any toys my kids did not play with, I returned after christmas..I refuse to waste money…I actually used a target store credit from returns to purchase toys on clearance for next christmas…hopefully they’ll play with them!

  13. Sherry

I got the Betty Spaghetty because that’s what my daughter is into now. At 70% off I’m giving them for Valentines and Easter. However I agree the other leftover toys are pretty random.

  14. Sophie

If the weather and roads were better where I live, I’d be there today, lol! Maybe this weekend if we don’t get another winter storm ⛄

  15. j

Wondered why the shelves were bare when I went looking for a birthday gift today. Lol

    • Erin

The stores are always like that after the holidays. They sell a ton for the holidays and clearance the remaining limited-shelf-life stuff. My daughter always wants to spend her gift cards immediately and I won’t let her because she’ll buy anything and it’ll sit around collecting dust.

  16. Jena

Wal-Mart also has toys on clearance 50-75% off right now.

  17. Kelly

Yesterday in CT I got the Disney Princess 11pack doll set reg $99.99 for $29.99 and a Disney Princess Castle for the same price. Plus 5% off Red Card discount. Super Score. They had big TMNTs also but nothing else I remember.

    • AE

Do you have item number for Disney princess set? Curious of price in my area…thanks!

  18. Brittany

Yesterday i was lucky enough to find the Minnie Mouse Sweet surprise kitchen in the toy clearance for $39. My daughter got a hand me down one that didnt have any accessories and was warped from being left in the rain so I was excited to find a brand new one half off. The box was dented up so maybe thats why no one had grabbed it earlier but their loss. 🙂

  19. momo

No need for anymore Toys, I’ve gotten enough this past yr with all the hip deals on the things I had wanted ;-D. Time to cool off til at least summer.

  20. circumspect41

WOO HOO!!! Scored the My Friend Cayla Party Time Doll for $20.98 AND the Cabbage Patch Kids Baby So Real for $49.98!!!!! Amazon and ToyRUs still has it for $99.00!!!! Thanks for the tip!!!

  21. Cathy

Maybe we’re all just buying our kids way too many things. Just seems like a lot of people are talking about how many things the kids are not touching. It’s a little overwhelming to get so much stuff for Christmas Yet we still do it.

  22. Kristin

I was able to score the Little Tikes junior easy store picnic table for $29.98 regularly $69.99 and the Cabbage Patch Kids Baby So Real for $29.98 also regularly $99

  23. Samantha

My three year old is going through Wal-Mart telling me what she wants still, and even though I have her Santa letter in a box she tells me she asked for toys she didn’t get, therefore she needs them. I am pretty sure it doesn’t work like that, and when did children become unappreciative of the toys they did get. Not to mention her birthday is literally 2 months to date after Christmas and she still can not wait.

  24. amyr

We bought our kids clothes and an annual pass to a local theme park. They were thrilled.

  25. Melissa

Same thoughts here. My son has so many toys but he barely plays with them. I have a closet full of new toys that he received for his birthday yet he does not even remember them. He was excited when he unwrapped the presents but forgot about them an hour later.
My goal for 2017 is to save by buying as less as possible. I have decided only to buy things which we absolutely need rather than getting swept away by good deals and trying to stock up. Sometimes I end up not using those items and money is wasted.

    • Meredith

Amen to that! I often wonder, how many of the gift closet or stock up items we buy actually get used? I personally have spent a lot of money trying to save money. Retail therapy can be dangerous no matter what form it takes, where some might spend 50 dollars on a nice shirt I will buy 5 10 dollar shirts on clearance and not wear any of them. Let’s be careful this year people!

      • Paige

I actually donated a ton of the “gift stash” items to toys for tot this year, because we had so much and stuff the kids were no longer interested in. I have wasted so much money thinking I was saving money. My hubby and I talked and have decided it will be best to wait to start Christmas shopping until October or November and to buy less, more
        Meaningful gifts.

        • Carrie

Good idea! I agree sometimes we end up buying things because it’s a great deal but then don’t need it or want it

  26. Maori

Kids aren’t born with generous, grateful hearts. We teach them it by what we model in our own attitudes towards the things we have and towards buying things. Less is more. Kids are more grateful for what they have when they don’t have too much.

  27. LiLi

i saw the Mini MixieQ at 5.98 at one of the Target i went to and i wanted to buy it.However some people couldn’t leave the box alone and open the box which the blind bag is missing. So sad and end up not buying it.

  28. Maggie

Anyone in northern NJ? Went to my target store yesterday nothing!!! Event not 30%off. Called this morning say possible 10% off but big snow. Didn’t go out.

  29. Leslieb4444

I snagged the Kid Kraft Aria Dollhouse today for $23.98, normally $79.99! I bought two for gifts.

  30. Sasha

After Christmas, bought a spin shimmer doll for $11!! We had a spin shine doll that we paid over $30 for. The dancing horse & Barbie were $12 & Minnie/daisy snap on outfits on clearance too!! This was in CA (visiting) & had a great selection!!!

  31. Rebecca

I got the Paw Patrol Zoomer Everest for $20.98 today at Target (originally $69.99). DCPI 087-08-0358

  32. Marie

I got the train table shown in the post for $20.98 last night! The clearance sticker still said $48.98, but we scanned it and lucked out! This will be our second table (my 5 yr old has been train obsessed since before he could walk), and for the price, it is an awesome addition! At my Target, most of the other toys were only 30% off, with a few at 50%, so I’ll be checking back to stock up for bday parties.
