Will this work on an apartment deck with wood slats?

    • SherryCC

      Same question!

    • Melissa

I assume these will work but most of these do not have a bottom. They are just a frame. So if you are in an apartment you will have to make some sort of bottom so that the soil and water do not drain through the wood deck. You will need to protect the deck maybe with a plastic sheet so that the wood is not water damaged. Then you will also have to be careful not to overwater so the plants are not waterlogged.

Home Depot has 40 pound bags of top soil for $1.98 😁

      • aachitty

A 40 lb bag of top soil is approx. 1/2 cu ft and, according to HD’s website, one of these raised beds calls for 6 cu ft. So, at 1/2 cu ft per 40 lb bag, you’ll need 12 bags. So, for less than $50, you can get the bed and the soil.

That particular bag of dirt is fill dirt and isn’t going to work well in a garden. When I bought my house, I bought that item to fill the deep hole in my yard left by the “for sale” sign. That dirt has sticks and rocks in it – great for filling a hole, but not gardening. For gardens, you need a mix of equal parts vermiculite, peat moss, and compost. You can buy these items separately and mix them yourself, or by premixed bags of “garden soil” or “garden mix.” The pre-mixed bags cost about $8 per bag. You can buy the $2 bag of dirt, but you probably will not get good results.
