For anyone on the fence, we LOVE our Roku! It’s the least restricted interface of streaming devices. Apple is EXTREMELY limited in their apps because they want you to purchase content pretty much only from their store. Chromecast is better, but still has some issues because Google owns it and has its own media capabilities. Roku doesn’t care because it’s simply tech. You’ll have the widest variety of apps/channels to pick from. Highly recommend!

Forgot to add- if you go Roku, Apple won’t be available as an option because they won’t coexist on any other streaming platform. However, Google Play is an option to add. Then all of the other standard stuff (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, Cinemanow, Lifetime, STARZ, etc) plus a million more.

So what are the best free services you can get with this? We kissed cable goodbye…

Netflix and channel pear (it’s a private channel so you have to do a google search to find out how to add it to roku.) You can find local news and prime time channels on channel pear, and it’s free for up to 5 channels. We remove and add channels all the time.

You can get “free” months of netflix by prepaying with gift cards bought on raise.com. set an alert for netflix and buy a giftcard when it hits above a certain % savings. Then load the whole amount to your netflix acct.

        Thanks for the tips Jen!

We use the Smithsonian Channel, History, Discovery, PBS (I’m never home to watch my PBS on time), NBC has lots of shows that are free. We pay for Netflix and Prime, but the others I mentioned all have free content available.

      • Julie

Ooooh! I’ll have to look for Smithsonian!!

Get the Firestick with Kodi. It surpasses all of the other streaming devices.

Where did you get yours and how much did it cost?
