Haha, I do the same thing!

Dollar Tree used to sell an actual trash can stretchy band that I’ve been using for years & it’s still going strong. They were white. I haven’t found them lately in any stores

    • Lori

I use that too. It’s wonderful!

Oh that’s cool – thanks for sharing 👍

Container Store sells a pack of 8 or so for $3 or $4

I use comand hooks and hook the tie from the bag on.

Great idea!!! I have a round simple human trash can and I don’t buy the actual bags for them. I get a big generic pack at Costco but they always fall! I hope this trick works.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Good luck! Thanks Kaylee!

  5. Christine

I’ve been doing this for years and I use the big rubber bands

    • Kris

Same here you can always find a rubber band for cheap

    • Sarah!!

Yes my dad just uses big rubber bands as well I’ve had issues in the past when the bags falling in until I started using Walmart brand (surprisingly!) I have yet to have one tear or fall in I’m in love lol

For large trash cans (the ones you put at the curb), we use bungee cords that hook together.

    • Debora

Thanks! that is a great idea for when we use the large construction bags…they always fall in.

  7. Alison

I use packaging tape…Good idea with the headbands!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks Alison!

  8. NavyMom

These sure don’t stay on my head! I’ll definitely be trying the trashcan trick. Thanks!

    • Lori

Ha! I thought i was the only one who couldn’t wear those headbands.

      • emulvey2001

Me too! I thought my noggin was just too big.

  9. Brooke

I use clothes pins on each side, but I love this idea too!!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks Brooke!

Just tie an overhand slip not on the top edge of the bag to make the opening smaller, then stretch it over the can.

    • faith

That’s what I always do too!

    • AnnieL.

Same here. I tie mine in a knot and they always stay.

My granny always used the waistband from a pair of nylons, and so I’ve always done the same, but nylons have gone so out of fashion, people always ask, “what’s that?!?”

    • jamie

My grandma was thrifty too…she would cut the elastic waist band out if her old granny panties and use those to hold ’em in place. Why pay for something she could upcycle from a pair of undies? There is a method to the madness… 😉

    • Kelly

There’s so many things you can do with nylons! When I was a kid I used to cut them and make hair ties! Are pantyhose out of fashion? Kate Middleton wears them!

      • Mommaof6(7thOnTheWay)

Nylons are so out of style! Only old ladies wear them. Young people don’t care what Middleton wears.

I tie one end or both ends of the bag before I put it in the trash bin. This process holds the bag pretty well. Hope this helps.

    • AnnieL.

      Me too.

  13. Pat

I use walmart bags as trash bags. The recyclables don’t use bags and we use an old huge folders tin as food compost bin.
