Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive: Leave Non-Perishable Food In Mailbox (May 13th Only)

Hip2Save may earn a small commission via affiliate links in this post. Read our full disclosure policy here.

Tomorrow, May 13th, the National Association of Letter Carriers is calling everyone to help “Stamp Out Hunger” with the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Stamp Out Hunger is the largest one-day food drive in the nation and will help feed millions of families in all 50 states!

This is a perfect time for you to go through your stockpile and donate as many non-perishable and unexpired food items as possible to support this cause! SO… grab your cans of soup, non-glass bottles of Juice, canned fruits and veggies, peanut butter, bags of pasta, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey) & brownie mixes, etc. and place all these items in a bag. You also can donate healthy, low-sodium, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil.

Then be sure to leave them at your mailbox on Saturday, May 13th. Your letter carrier will pick up your items and deliver them to local food banks or pantries.

They are requesting no glass containers

    • Kell

You’re right. That’s stated in the text of the post. However, I do see though in the pic there is a glass jar so could be confusing for some.

    • Bryn (Sister Sidekick)

Woops! Sorry for the confusion! I just took a new picture – no glass featured! 🙂

Does pasta expire? I have some boxes that I don’t know which are old and which are new because they don’t have dates on them.

    • SJ

Yes pasta expires. Throw it out if you don’t know how old it is.

For anyone reluctant to leave bags outside because of weather or other concerns, you may want to bring your donation to your local post office. I live in an apartment complex, and I don’t like leaving my bag out on the sidewalk. So I just dropped it off at the post office this morning, and they happily accepted it. It might also save your mail carrier a little time and effort!

I’m in a gated community and someone came in and stole the food from under everyone’s mailboxes- we got it on our security camera! My USPS person said it’s very common unfortunately.

        Wow, that’s sad. 🙁

      Great idea!! 🙂

Would a jar of nutella work if peanut butter is accepted?

    • Leah

      Yes

  5. Kylie

I wonder if they would take new bags and cans of cat food and dog food.So many seniors have a pet that they struggle to feed.Does anyone know?

    • Jess

      Yes! Pet food is welcome!

    • Leah

      That’s a good idea

    • LJB

I would pass those along to your local animal shelter instead. Many animal shelters have programs in place to help provide food for animals for struggling families in order to keep the animals in a home instead of a shelter.

    • m

Petco will take pet food. They have a bin at the entrance of the store.

  6. Alison

Thank you for the reminder! I almost forgot.

  7. Fran

I feel like very few of my neighbors or friends participate in this, so I posted it to my facebook!!

As someone who works this at my church every year, I ask everyone to have some respect and consideration to what you are donating. I found a mustard jar from 1979 last year! If in doubt, please throw it out!! We had so many years old expired food, half ripped boxes, opened sealed food, etc that were donated.

    • Carrie C.

      Wow! 1979 mustard!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Oh wow! Thanks for the reminder to check expiration dates Ash!

In order to keep people from stealing it, I pretty much just put enough food to fill my mail box. I can get quite a bit in it and it’s safe from weather and thieves!

  10. Monique

1979 mustard that has to be like an antique or artifact haha lol and if someone needs to steal food from my mail box they apparently need it so I don’t think I would mind if someone took it the point is to help the needy and if mine gets stolen I’m still helping the needy…
