I 2nd that both of our trips to Jamaica were through a travel agent!

How amazing would a vacation like that top picture be???!!! Sigh.

I feel so silly, I just found out that travel agents don’t cost more money a few days ago! And I’m 41! I think I always just assumed there was a fee to use their services, and that only rich people use travel agents. I would just scour the net for the best deals I could find myself. A few days ago I was telling my mother how intimidated I am to plan a Disney World trip, and she suggested I use a travel agent. That’s when I found out. LOL!

I’m 31 & you all have enlightened me! I always assumed there was a charge. So good to know!

After spending about 3 hours diving into planning a Disney trip for our family of 5 (and getting absolutely nowhere), I thought “why not just get a quote from a travel agent?” I had heard great things about Sabrina, the enchanted traveler, but figured she’d be waaayyy out of our price range. Anyhow, a long story short, our trip was planned down to the meals in less than a week. She was available by email, cell and text every step of our trip. Amazing. I cant say enough about her and I honestly can’t possibly imagine how we could’ve done it for much/any less money. It would’ve taken me years to get all those details taken care of. We’re thinking about a more relaxing/beach kind of vaca next and I won’t even hesitate to do anything but call her!

I have never used a travel agent because I thought they charged for their services and I have always booked my own trips. So am I understanding this correctly, travel agents don’t charge extra for their services?

    • Juliana

      I use AAA

    • Dave

That’s correct. They get paid by the travel industry so it is definitely a good idea to use a travel agent.

    What weird comments

    • Bluewatergirl

      I’m laughing myself!

  6. Becky

Not weird comments at all! I always thought the same, and the fact that one piped up to say they don’t cost extra probably will save a lot of people stress and money down the road. Thanks for sharing! I assumed they were an expense I couldn’t afford also!

  7. Krista

Hi, from personal experience a travel agent doesn’t cost anything extra but we found out when we were quoted prices. They were higher than going directly thru the resort. So they do get something but not sure how it works.

  8. JES

I highly recommend Sandals Antigua!!! One of our favorite places that I have ever been. Plan to go back for our 15 year anniversary. So, I have a little over 4 years to save up!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Glad to hear how much enjoyed your last Sandals trip! Thanks for the feedback!

My sis in law just became certified to be a Sandals Agent and Disney Agent. She said they do all the work to find the best price for you, keep everything organized, help you get the dream vacation you have in mind. There is zero extra charge! They are given credits per booking and after so many credits they get discounts for their own vacation or can save up for a free one! She decided to become an agent after going to Sandals for her destination wedding and another vacation! She loves it and knows all about each location now! She would be happy to answer any questions you have! https://www.facebook.com/tovammt/ that’s the link to her Disney page but you can also ask her about Sandals and show her this hip2save link so she can get you this same deal! A big bonus to having an agent is they are your go to person for any questions or problems or issues or anything!!

  10. Rach

It’s glad to know that we can actually use a travel agent without spending extra! Interesting 😊

  11. AP

    Is this adults only?

    • Mercedes

      Yes

  12. Amber Benson

Some agents do charge fees and some do not (I do not) so check with your particular agent to be sure. We are generally paid by the resort or tour operator directly, which in no way increases your cost. The cost of our commission is already built into the cost you are paying the company directly so why not get something for that money? You will also be supporting small businesses whose main focus is that you have a wonderful vacation experience.

Definitely give a Travel Professional a try! We can save you quite a bit of time, hassle, and often money. Find a Travel Professional you trust and I will bet you never go back to booking on your own again!

Sandals grenada. It was an amazing trip.

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Hip2Save, I also know nothing about how travel agents work, similar to what other posters above are commenting. Maybe a post about travel agents, how they work, how they can save you money, and tips on when to use them would be a good idea? Then people can comment with travel agents/agencies that they recommend? I read an article in the Boston Globe a few weeks (months?) ago that said travel agents are making a huge comeback because it’s so overwhelming to plan your own trip with so much info available online. I, for one, would find a post like that super helpful! Thanks =)

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks for the suggestion Liz! I will pass this along to the team!

    Hi Collin and Hip2savers,
Kind of off topic, but anyone here familiar with driving around in Florida? Say going from Orlando airport (MCO) to the Gulf beaches? Is that too much of a hassle to drive that far? I am a widow and taking my teenagers to Disneyworld next month and really our first big trip since their dad died couple of years ago I just wanna be at beach for few days I love Miami and Ft Lauderdale but never been to Tampa or Ft Myers. (want to go to Sanibel/Capitiva) I am from the Rockies and used to drive in Orange county in california area but somehow feeling intimidated to drive alone in Florida. 😁 I know its weird!! I just blame anxiety …
    Thank you for any tips!

    • Liz

I live in fort Myers. From Orlando to fort Myers is about 3 1/2 hours in good traffic. Not a difficult drive. Some traffic can just be frustrating with road work and wrecks. South seas resort on captiva is beautiful.

    • Darla Bailey

Hi Heather, I just got back from Sanibel and it is wonderful, soft white sand, warm, clear ocean water and tons of shells everywhere! We stayed at the Song of the Sea, it was right on the water and included the use of kayaks, paddle boards and bikes, I recommend it. Stop at Publix and buy some inflatable toys to float around in before you get there, you can also find them at Jerry’s on the island. If you are just going for the day I recommend Bowman’s beach, great for teenagers! We also bought all of our tours and such from Groupon before we got there and it saved us hundreds of dollars. We have driven to Sanibel from Orlando and it’s not a hassle, much easier than driving in OC. Have fun!

      • Heather

Thank you Collin I truly appreciate. I’m checking the post right now and I love this site everyone is so helpful and supportive.

        • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

          You’re welcome! 😉

    • Lisa

      Hi Heather,
I have vacationed in Sanibel for years. You will love it! Just know that it’s very pristine and sometimes teenagers don’t love it because there aren’t go-carts and all the regular beach town activities. I love the West Gulf blvd. area (great area for shell collecting). I like West Wind Inn, Sea Shells and Shalimar Cottages. We love to eat at Over Easy Café for breakfast, The Green Flash – Captiva (lunch or supper) a little pricey but very good. We also like Grandma Dots at the Marina. Don’t waste your time at the Bubble Room…it’s highly overrated. Be sure and drive thru Ding Darling Park, visit the shell museum and lighthouse and grab some ice cream at Pinocchios. Another great thing to do is Captiva Cruise out of Captiva that takes you to Cabbage Key or Useppa Island. I recommend Useppa. It’s a cool, private island with an interesting museum and lunch at the Tarpon Inn on the island is always good. We have also done the Sanibel Thriller. That’s a lot of fun as well…but don’t forget to wear sunblock. Collect lots of shells and enjoy your time in Florida. P.S. Magic Kingdom is one of my favorite places to visit as well.

    • Heather

Thank you Liz, Darla Bailey and Lisa and Collin these are all great tips and suggestions I will check it out and plan my trip with more confidence now. Yes my kids collect sea shells I think that it will be a memorable well deserved vacation. Thanks!

  16. Tammy

I agree with Liz about a Travel Agent post. I’ve always planned my own vacations. Half the fun is in the planning. But, I’d like to know the perks of using an agent. What is the benefit?

    • Amber Benson

I think that’s a common misconception, that if an agent is involved you lose control over your entire trip. We’re here to do as much or as little of the planning as you prefer. One main benefit outside of the planning itself is to serve as a travel advisor and advocate for the guest. We travel to these resorts, continually update our training, work with their managers and supplier staff, and have other industry contacts that we use to ensure our clients have the best experience possible.

During your vacation, should any problems arise, that’s also what we’re here for. You never know when a weather event or airline problem will cause havoc on your plans and we can help navigate that for you so you don’t have to do a thing. I had a client not too long ago that was driving to the airport, post-trip, and her flight was abruptly cancelled. No other flights that day, nothing decent to return on until two days later. While she drove, I rearranged her flights, found her a hotel, and arranged a day trip to a local attraction so she could enjoy the unexpected change of plans. All she had to do was change the address in her GPS and have fun. I specialize in Disney vacations so I’m often helping guests while they are on-site to figure out how to get to a particular restaurant, what to do when they lose a Magic Band, who to call for a prescription delivery, you name it.

Not all agents are the same so it is important to find someone you are comfortable working with and then use their knowledge to maximize your vacation time!

Hello, I am trying to get together a list of the local establishments in Bolnuevo & Mazarron, so that we can create a local directory for people visiting Marina de Bolnuevo. If you have any ideas, please submit them to the Marina de Bolnuevo Blog on the website. If you can, please include their email address. Thanks in advance Alicia.
