Ever wanted to keep an eye on your home while away?
My husband and I recently installed a weatherproof Nest Outdoor Security Camera that lets us keep an eye on our entryway and driveway with live streaming video and alerts to our phones when activity is detected and when a person is at the door.
The camera was relatively easy to install by plugging into an outlet outside and then mounting the base above the entry. It then connects magnetically to the base and can point to a specific direction. (We actually went a step further and drilled a hole in the wall to direct wire the cord, but that’s definitely an optional step.) It was also easy to connect to our WiFi and install the Nest app. (The whole process took a couple hours and was mostly us deciding where to mount it.)
I have to say that I LOVE being able to see what’s going on in front of my house!
It’s perfect for letting me see when a package is delivered, or why the dog is barking when I’m upstairs, and also to re-assure me when the kids get off the school bus. It’s great to feel in the know about what’s happening at home – and I may be a little obsessed about checking it. 😉
I actually became interested in the Nest Outdoor Security Camera from my neighborhood watch online group after reading about the increasing amount of package theft and car theft in my area, and since we also have Nest Learning Thermostats I can control both products from the same app.
There’s even a Talk & Listen feature that lets us directly speak to folks outside.
The doorbell makes my dog go crazy so it’s nice to say to someone “Hold on a moment!” or “We can’t play right now.” to neighborhood kids without opening the door or even being home.
Overall, the quality of the image is good and it does exactly what I was looking for!

Thank you. I was just looking for an outdoor camera since I live in an area with high property crime and an unfriendly neighbor who has decided to bring his dogs into a few of our yards to leave an unpleasant surprise, ugh, irked!

I just got all nest protects and thermostats for my new home. Best deal hands down is kohls as you earn Kohl’s cash and rewards. So while price is he same and you can’t use % off, at least you get something back. It’s also a great use of kohls cash as you don’t get that % off anyways when redeeming. What I did was buy one to earn kohls cash and then redeemed to purchase the next

We have the Nest camera installed in our Entryway. (We did drill a hole in the brick to hard wire it.) You can see what packages have been delivered. The biggest thing for me is knowing my son is home from school. I have used the Talk & Listen feature when pizzas were being delivered and I couldn’t make it to the door. I absolutely love it

As I was reading this post, my doorbell rang. It was the 587th solicitor this year! Maybe I need this. My house is in great shape, all new windows, lawn is lush and weed free and they still stop here all too often. I don’t need their services and it would be so much easier to look at my phone and know it isn’t worth opening the door.
Honestly I just put a post it note on the doorbell that says don’t ring, we don’t open for solicitors… it was for when my baby was sleeping, but I just leave it there permanently. If it was a neighbor who came, they all have my cell number anyways, and police just ring it regardless, so you’re really not missing out on anything good at all

Anyone know of another good brand that will work in hotter temperatures? I noticed the high operating temp on this is 105 deg. And living in Las Vegas, it would have to operate in up to 115 deg or sometimes even hotter.
Anyone in Southern NV or Arizona can recommend something?

I have several Lorex cameras and they are perfect even with the hot temps. I use a DVR to record to as I don’t have to pay a fee each month but if cloud storage is your preference they have that too.
This was a tip given to me by my local police. Somewhere on the outside of the home you need a sign or sticker about being on camera, it can be small and inconspicuous. That supposedly helps in court if you ever need to show what/who you recorded. Of course this could be different in other areas 🙂

This might be a silly question, but the only outdoor outlet we have is right by the front door. What is to stop someone from just unplugging it and grabbing a package?
That’s actually a great question and perhaps one con to consider with such an easy camera to install – I found this article…Also I noticed you can buy camera “covers” or skins to match your home’s color better.

I would like to know how it compares to the RING camera system. I have the nest thermostat and we really like it but haven’t looked into the nest cameras. Has anyone compared the two?

I have both the Ring Doorbell and the Ring Camera/Motion Detector. I live part time near Palm Springs and they both work wonderful. Its 110 degrees today and they work fine in the summer. We can see if the gardener and pool guy actually come when we are not there. I have a second home at the beach and can “answer” the door from anywhere. Its $30 a year for cloud recording.

I’ve been told the fine print included with Nest allows them access to video/audio files of their products from users. Is this accurate?
I have a bunch of these and I’ve called Nest about issues and have been told they can’t access anything. They told me they couldn’t see my history or what I was seeing (video quality issue). So I’m not sure if that’s true or not…
