They are offering some great deals to Hawaii but do some research!!! My family all live in Hawaii and there is a recent disease outbreak affecting the Islands called Rat lungworm. Mom thinks they are keeping it hush hush so not to scare tourist off. Look it up and just be carful. Wouldn’t stop me

Also live in Hawaii. Theres only been 4 cases and they have been on the big island Hawaii. As long as y’all are washing your hands and not eating snails I think you’ll be just find. Watch kids touching the ground where snails may have passed over etc.

    • Kristin

I live in Maui they are doing everything they can to educate the community about Rat lungworm. They have informational meetings on almost a weekly basis. The restaurants are all educated on the guidelines of how to clean the produce. My suggestion is to educate yourself on any place you plan to travel but don’t let it scare you off.

Rat lungworm is spread by snails and slugs (who crawl through rat poop and then spread the disease around with their slime). It is not spread by person to person contact. Washing all produce before you eat it is the easiest way to avoid contracting it.

As of Wednesday May 27th, the Health Department had confirmed 15 cases of the illness in Hawaii for 2017, including nine from the Big Island, four Maui residents and two Maui visitors.

Stay in a vacation home rental if you go. Save a bunch having a kitchen, space to spread out, and be away from concentration of tourists. We had 7 of us go last summer and stayed right on the beach and it was wonderful

    • brenda

Where did you stay would love suggestions?

      • Debra Johnson

we just got back from Oahu and stayed in a home rental on Sunset beach Check out VRBO.com. great site

this comes at a perfect time im trying to plan a trip but can’t decide what island to stay at, am very overwhelmed. I like doing all the tourist things and i have a 3 year old. any island suggestion would be appreciated

Brenda, My family and I went to Hawaii 2 years ago with our 3 year old. We spent 8 days total on both Oahu and Big Island. We rent a cottage near the Volcanoes National Park and we really enjoyed it. Kids had a good time at Waikiki beach in Honolulu. We also climbed the Diamond Head but there were too many people so my husband carried our 3 year old over the shoulder all the way up and down. It was a good workout for him 🙂

We love Kihei in Maui. We stay at Hale Pau Hana, highly recommend!

We live on Kauai with our 4 kids and it’s amazing! Lots of great places for kids and easy to see so many different things in a short amount of time. You can drive from one side of the island to the other in under two hours. There are laws in place to avoid it becoming like Oahu – overrun with commercialism and huge buildings, so it’s got lots of cute little towns and. There are times that it almost feels like we live in another country and I love it!

Visiting Hawaii is on my bucket list! Is there really only a deal on leaving from ONE city in the whole country? That’s quite the small targeted audience (for a whole enticing post! lol), unless I’m missing something? And to which HI airport? (looks like there’s 3 for Maui) The airport nearest me is DTW, and I’m not seeing anything near that cheap! 🙁 (I selected dates in late Aug)

    • Marcie

Kahului airport (OGG) is the airport you want to fly into.

If you are planning to visit Maui on a budget, check out stayinkihei.com or vrbo.com for vacation condo rentals.

I live in socal and found an Expedia bargain fare (this past Tuesday I think) for $406 LAX-LIH in August–you have to buy it before you know details. All this time I forgot hotwire and Expedia have this as an option sometimes. I like to use kayak to find the cheapest flexible dates, and they were $600-$800 for this whole summer, depending on the island. Needless to say, I jumped on it. “Regular” fares were coming up $537-$600+ for LIH for the same dates. Just an option esp if you’re really flexible with your dates.
