Does anyone know if this is an old version? I thought the current photoshop was subscription based.

The FULL version of photoshop IS subscription based. You lease the program. That is designed for professional designers and photographers. If you’re not skilled at photoshop, you probably don’t want it! It’s super sophisticated! Elements is for amateur photographers and hobbyists who know what a good photo should look like and just want to clean/polish their work. I am in the latter group and have been waiting for a sale on this newest version. (I own an older version). It’s not overly technical and even has a quick mode (the program does most of the editing), guided mode (it explains what buttons do and how to use them), and expert mode (if you’re already familiar with the tools and how to use them). Like any program, it does take some time to fully understand it and be skilled at using it. I hope this has been helpful.

I’m a newbie photographer and just started taking pictures in raw. I downloaded the free program RAW THERAPY and GIMP. The GIMP program is sort of like Photoshop. There are some patches that people have that make the short cuts the same as Photoshop cs6. I don’t know anything about photography programs to really comment on any of these programs, their differences, their similarities, etc. I thought I give an option to look at free software out there. I only chose these programs because my son used it for a while and like them. He now owns a subscription to Lightroom and photoshop.

I would say stick with the subscription it’s only $10 a month and you consistently get all of their upgrades as they release them. But my favorite feature is the creative cloud which means you can access your work from any computer.
