Easy DIY String Art (Fun Fall Project)
Ready to get crafty? 🔨 🎃
String art is such a fun and creative craft project to do with family and friends! It’s pretty simple and straightforward, plus requires just a few supplies you may already have on hand. String art can be made for any holiday by simply printing out any clip art shape to make a template with.
Today I’m sharing this cute fall pumpkin example!
This would be a great opportunity to use up any pieces of scrap wood that you have on hand. You can stain or paint it as desired. I stained a piece of 12×14 inch plywood using Minwax Wood Stain in Dark Walnut, and printed out a pumpkin shape on an 8.5×11 inch piece of computer paper.
DIY String Art
Supplies Needed:
- 12×14 inch piece of wood, stained or painted
- string in desired colors (I used Crochet Thread)
- hammer
- craft scissors
- 1-inch nails
- pumpkin clip art image
Instructions:
1.) Print template and place on wood, centered. Hammer nails along the outline of pumpkin about every 1/2 inch. Try to nail as straight as possible, but mine isn’t perfect and I’m fine with that. 😊
2.) Remove the paper template.
3.) Weave string around nails. This is where you could get extremely technical and make patterns with string, but I was pretty laid back and just made random zigzags with the string.
First tie string to one nail, and then weave around each nail with a string until you’ve gone around the entire shape. Finally tie off the string around a nail when finished.
3.) Use a different color string to outline the shape of the pumpkin. I used yellow string inside the pumpkin, and then switched to orange to outline the details and also for the stem.
Such a fun little piece of decor you can display on the wall or on your tabletop for fall!
I think a fall leaf or candy corn shape would be fun also. Really, you can customize this craft for any occasion or theme. I’ve also noticed the trend of string art done on actual pumpkins as a creative, no-carve pumpkin idea!
My daughter and I used the same technique and put together this little mason jar string art and used a small bouquet of faux flowers and pumpkin for the top. So fun and festive!
My son made this large baseball string art to display in his room last year, and I love it! A football shape would also be a fun idea for fall.
Enjoy!

I recently visited my parents out of state. I was helping them do some clean up and found one of these in my grandfathers belongings. He past away 20 years ago. It’s an owl and it is pretty cool!
Krisp, what a sweet memory that must be.
That is so neat!
My daughter loves string art, the wood and nail method is the sturdiest but we have also used foam board with straight pins and embroidery floss
Oh fun- thanks for sharing 👍
These look great! Really different and fun. Who doesn’t love playing with string?
Thanks so much! I agree- so fun.
Love this!
I made a deer once for my bf. He loved it.
I’ve only done string art a couple of times but I’m curious if you strayed these pieces with a ton of glue if you could take the nails out and have a piece of art you could hang anywhere?
Where is a good place to buy the wood pieces.
The hardware store such as Home Depot. You can have them cut it to any size you’d like.
tip: Sometimes my store will let me have the small scraps of wood next to the saw that others have discarded.
