Have you seen the VERY popular LOL Surprise Ball?

They are basically really large plastic balls that have small collectible toys/dolls inside them, and they were priced around $70 during the 2017 Christmas season! Yes, for real — $70 ! 😮. In fact, when Collin did a Facebook live video with her daughter where they opened up the LOL Surprise Ball to reveal what you’re really getting for all that cash. Let’s just say she was pretty shocked at the price tag for what you truly get when you take away ALL. THE. PACKAGING.

(Watch the Facebook Live Video Here)

As a funny/silly gift idea, I recently made a friend of mine a grown-up homemade adult version of the LOL Suprise Ball! 🤗 Haha! It’s filled with random treats like makeup, accessories, essential oils, a bath bomb, lotion, and other items to make my friend feel special. I couldn’t think of what to use for a perfectly round ball, so I bought a huge Easter egg from Amazon.com, and it worked out perfectly! I then used my Cricut machine to make some stickers, and it turned out to be a FUN way and CREATIVE way to gift a surprise!

DIY LOL Surprise Ball

When it comes to making this gift for family and friends, the beauty is how you can personalize them for the lucky recipients. The only requirement for this DIY LOL Suprise Ball is your creativity.

Supplies Needed:

Directions:

  • Collect little goodies such as nail polish, lip gloss, essential oils, jewelry, etc.
  • Cut and apply stickers to egg. (You could alternatively print lettering on paper and tape to surface.)
  • Individually wrap each item with paper like a real LOL Surprise, or use gift basket grass like I did.
  • Secure egg together and surprise someone!

I’d like to point out that these eggs can hold a lot of weight and are pretty sturdy!

I think this is a fun gift idea and can have so many different themes and possibilities. If you wanted to stick toys in there for a child, it’d be cute, too. And, of course, this would be a perfect surprise Easter gift during spring!

What would you put in your LOL Surprise Ball?

I think I could even do this for my 5 yr old instead of the LOL doll surprise ball. I just donā€™t think itā€™s worth $70! Plus I could fill it with all her favorite things. Thank you for the great idea!

    • Jess

I doubt it! I have two little kids and I would have had no idea what these were if it wasnā€™t for Hip2save.

    • Kate

It depends how much time your friend spends on social media, you tube, blogs, etc. LOL surprise balls are surprisingly popular at the moment and Iā€™ve run into videos and ads all over the internet recently. And, even if they havenā€™t heard of it, I think it is a fun spin on a gift basket idea.

  10. Stacy

    Omg this is GENIUS!!!!

  14. Mourrene

    Excellent idea!!!!

  15. ds

    Great idea and saves money

  16. Jamie

You could also use an empty giant bucket of ice cream with a handle, or some kind of empty food container like a big pretzel or cheese ball tub with a plastic lid. I hate throwing those things away because I know Iā€™ll have a project like this that could use them!

    • Lina D

      Oh great idea!

  17. kathy

This is awesome!!! I am so totally doing this! Thanks to the deals from this sight, it should be an awesome gift! Thanks!!

  18. Debbie

Love this! I never really got the appeal of those LOL balls for the price they’re selling at but I think making personalized ones would be so much fun!

    • Lina D

      Yay! I agree šŸ‘šŸ»

  19. Holly-Marie

How cute is this. Love it!

  20. MommySpendsLess

The real LOL surprises have several layers with small items before you reach the center. I think that’s a lot of the appeal, at least for my daughter. To get that effect you could wrap the item in plastic wrap or crepe paper then add a small object (temporary tatoo, stickers, message/brain teaser, small flat candy, coins, earrings or a bracelet, etc.) then wrap it again and repeat as many times as you want.

    • Lina D

      Yes perfect!

  21. Rebecca

Okay, I have NO idea what an LOL ball is. ???

    • Lina D

See the linked facebook live video where Collin opens one! šŸ˜€

    • Nancy

      Rebecca, me neither…

  22. Itlnprnces21

This is an awesome idea. Going to do this for my daughters teachers.

  23. Brittany

I would put bath bombs, mini candles, and individual wine or champagne bottles in mine. This is such a great idea!

    • Lina D

      Love those items! Thanks

  24. Nina

Gosh I am just so not up on all these trends. This is pretty similar to a gift basket? n thatā€™s what Iā€™d call it, lol

  25. Raql

It is a fun idea! I was thinking to save the $17 (from buying the egg) and make a my own ball using a balloon, glue and newspaper, like a piƱata! Or using a cheaper container from Dollar Tree!

    • Lina D

      Great idea!

    • SquirrelGirl

I like where your head is at! I may even have some leftover large egg containers from last year’s Easter!

  26. Jenny

    Cool

  27. Lesli

Oh my gosh, I love this idea! I’d love to get one of these. Can you be my new BFF Lina? šŸ˜‰ I always love your ideas and recipes too. I think I could even do something like this for my 4 year old since there’s no way I’m paying $70 for one.

    • Lina D

Ahhh yes of course!! Thanks so much Lesli!

  28. SquirrelGirl

I think there should be an LOL Adult Surprise Ball filled with mini wine bottles, chocolate, and a girly movie/show!

    • Lina D

      Oh perfect idea!!!

  29. Amani

Iā€™m not sure of the price but Party City sells round balls like this. Just in case someone would prefer not to use the egg shape. Iā€™m sure it would be cute either way.

    • Val

      Yes Amani thank u!

  30. Katherine

So is it like a stocking but an expensive ball?

  31. JessSC

    Love this!

  32. V

Here is a little something to chuckle at….. I thought Hatchimals and LOL Balls were the same thing. Feel free to laugh. Never took the time to look at what LOL Balls were. I have boys.

    • Lori

Im right there with you V!

  33. Angie

Love it! Much better frugal idea with hand picked gifts that will end up costing much less than $70. šŸ˜Š

  34. Sharol

Wow!!! $70 for the little bit of toys!!??? What a rip off! The little kids the LOL ball is geared toward have NO SENSE of money, so I’d much rather make my own as many here have said. This way, you can personalize it for teacher gifts or birthdays! All great ideas, ladies! Thank you, Lina for the inspiration!!!

  35. Jenny

I really try to get these hot toys if my kids want them, but I’ll still try to get a good deal if I can. Which is why I ā¤ļø h2s;) To my surprise, I was able to get the LOL big surprise at Target with the 25% off mobile coupon! It was also on sale for $59.99, So I got it for $45:) doesn’t seem too bad for that price!

    • Lina D

      Thanks for sharing!

  36. Jenny

I do love the adult LOL ball idea!! I make goodie bags for my friends every yr and throw in a gift card, I think I’m gonna try this now šŸ˜ƒ

    • Lina D

      Fun idea! Thanks

  37. lily

  44. Happyday1

Iā€™m doing this for my girlfriends with the foil packets of pina coladas and margaritas!

  45. Trisha G

Now THIS is something I would want! It looks like mini wine bottles would fit in there perfectly
    šŸ˜‰šŸ·
I was watching the video yesterday and was appalled how much they are charging and how much is actually thrown away! I think the LOL is for them, after they get everyone to buy it…they are LOL-ing all the way to the bank! Thanks for sharing!

    • Lina D

      Ha so true! šŸ˜€

  46. KNM

    Nice idea. Love it!

  47. Susan Crawford

If you take all the free samples from just what you get through the year, use leftover tissue especially the red, green and white and an container you could do this. $70.00 for one of the LOL balls seems like a rip off to me. That is just my opinion.

  48. Scarlet B

    Nice. Love it!

  49. Amie

    Love this idea!

  50. as

Lol, great idea. Thanks 4 the inspiration
