Here’s what Hip2Save readers have to say about VIPKID.com

Today is actually my 1 year anniversary working with VIPKID! It truly is an incredible company to work for – flexible, fun, professional, perfect work from home job! I started it on a whim and quickly fell in love with it!

I’ve been teaching with VIPKID for about 6 months. I’m starting my second contract in October. I love every minute of this job. The kids are so cute and have so much respect for their teachers. They have so much dedication to learning English. Plus there are other perks to being a part of VIPKID. Incentives, rewards for being a part of the Hutong community and so much more. It is flexible and you can make up to at least easily $1000 a month. I get about $20 an hour.

I am a teacher with VIPKID and LOVE it!!! I am a stay at home mom and teach either before my kids wake up or after they go to sleep! It’s wonderful. I love that I set my own hours! The Chinese children are adorable and it is so rewarding to get to be a part of their educational lives!

I’ve been doing this for 2 months now and it is awesome. I’m a stay-at-home mom and just teach for a few hours in the morning before my kids are awake and that’s it! If you do want to know more about it you can send me an email at Laurahuisman@rocketmail.com.

    • Whitney Hall

I sent you an email 🙂

    • Melissa

Is there a way to do this and still teach a normal school day? I am a third year teacher, and looking to make a little more cash 🙂

  2. harlooey

Does anyone know if I could do something similar with no degree anywhere online? Thanks

    • Summer

What do you do for photoshop?

    • V

Are you suggesting to photoshop a diploma????

    • Staci

I would like to know more about this.

    • Emma

Oh my goodness, seriously?! That is SO dishonest! These Chinese families are making sacrifices to afford a highly educated native English teacher and the thought of someone scamming the system makes me sad. Not sure if they have always done them, but they definitely require a background check to get hired recently.

  3. Rose S

I love VIPKID! I have been able to stay home with my baby with this fantastic company. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me- rosiesolomon @ outlook. com or click here to get started on the application process! https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=7250831&refersourceid=a01

    • Anu

So you don’t need to any any teaching experience? I have Bachelors degree but not teaching. Tia.

      • Laura

Teaching experience can include working at a Sunday school, tutoring, etc. They are very flexible with what they consider teaching.

        • Anu

Good to know thank you for answering.

          • Laura

No problem! Let me know if you have any other questions!

  4. Arlene

I never heard back from them…I just got an email saying they got my resume, and then nothing. Is that normal?

    • Laura

      Is your application complete?

      • Arlene

I thought so, I actually applied via Indeed.com. So all it did was ask some questions that went attached to my resume. I’m not sure if that’s the correct process. I saw it posted on Indeed before I saw it here.

        • Arlene

          answer some questions haha

          • Arlene

Oh, ok, thank you. I’ll do that. Thanks for the link. 🙂

  5. Minde

I wold love to do this! my youngest just started kindergarten and I have been looking for a small work from home job with flexible hours.
I have a master’s degree in English, but do not have any teaching experience.
Does anyone know if there are any similar reputable jobs in tutoring or proofreading etc that don’t require the teaching experience?

    • Rose

You don’t need teaching experience! Contact me if you need help with the application process! 🙂

      • hazel

Hi Rose.. how is the interview?

        • Rose

Hi! For the interview, you conduct a mock class. Everything is pretty straightforward. Feel free to email me with any other questions! rosiesolomon@outlook.com

  6. Sue P

This is great as far as a part time job, but I honestly find the whole concept rather frightening, as a mom and a teacher!

    • Jessica

Just because I am curious- :o) What is it about it that is frightening? I do it and have never thought that once. Is it seeing someones home through a computer or meeting someone on the other side of the world? Or that it is a foreign company? I can’t think of anything frightening. :o)

  7. Sheryl

Laura, what does the referral link do? I’d be happy to use it.

    • Laura

The referral link is just a way for them to track that I referred you so it gives me a monetary bonus. If you click on the link it takes you to their sign up page so you’ll have to fill out the application and so on. If you choose to sign up I would be more than happy to Skype with you and do step by step of the interview process 🙂

  8. Catie

I started with VIP kids in July and it has been my favorite part time job! I also teach full time so the flexibility is great! Feel free to email me (orngecat88@aol.com) if you have any questions or want tips–I can give you my referral code to sign up with too!

    • Melissa

I teach and I am looking to make more money. I am also in grad school. What are hours do you do VIP kids and what hours do you normally spend in your classroom?

  9. Christina

I have a bachelors in management and have worked as a reading tutor and as a mentor in after school programs, but I don’t know if it is a years worth? Should I still apply?

    • Laura

Yes! Definitely give it a try if you like working with kids and teaching them something!

      • Christina

Ok thanks! I’ll use your link!

      • Vivian D Harris

Laura just curious, how do they pay you? Im a retired teacher.

  10. Lauren

Another happy VIPKID teacher here! I have been with the company a few months now and have LOVED every minute of it! This company has been an incredible blessing to my family as it allows me to be a SAHM and help pay down our debt! I would be happy to answer any questions any one may have 😊 https://m.vipkidteachers.com/?refereeId=6783306&refersourceid=a01

    • kahila

for those who are currently employed. I currently work from home but absolutely hate the company I work for. it’s not easy to just quit since I do have to provide mainly my bills are just the groceries but still. I don’t have a Bachelors degree, but I do have my associates. I’ve never been in a teaching environment, but my youngest 2 kids I “homeschooled” them until the start of kindergarten. once in K they were both reading at a 1.5 grade level. now my boys 4th n 5th grades are reading well beyond their grade and are both in high ability for math and reading. pls let me know if I should even apply or since I don’t have a Bachelors is it a complete waste of time tia

      • Lauren

Hi! Unfortunately, the company does require a Bachelor’s for employment. Best of luck finding a new job that fits you better!

  11. Summer

For all of you that currently teach with VIP- are your hours mainly early morning?? That’s just not gonna work for me! My kids are unpredictable and early risers. I’d need to do it after everyone is dropped off (like 10-2)

    • Natalie

The hours are mainly up to you. Early morning during the week tend to be busy. But a lot of people work weekends too. Evenings in the weekends are very busy too!!! And during holidays and summer months you can work weekday night because the kids aren’t in school at that time. I’d love to help you with any questions!!!

    • Laura

They have evening shifts too. Depending on where you are in the United States, you could start at 8 p.m. I’m near Chicago so it’s a 12 hour time difference to China right now.

    • Jessica

10-2 is not likely though. Depending on your time zone, China is about 12 hours different from here. So from 10-2 they would be asleep. I’d hate for you to go through the process and be disappointed in the end.

    • Mel C

Summer, it depends what time zone you are in. I am in Mountain Standard time and the latest I can teach is 7am, because that is 10 pm Beijing time and the latest the student can take classes. I do work evenings from 9-11pm also, so I don’t have to get up as early, and I love that time. I usually work a few nights a week, then do 6-7am each morning. If you are Eastern Time you can work later in the morning, I think the last class is 9 or 10am, but if you are West Coast, the times are earlier. Hope this helps. Basically classes run from 9am-10pm Beijing time and you can sign up as available for any hours between those times.

  12. Andrea

Do they expect you to be overly animated? I have been wanting to apply for awhile now, but I was a bit discouraged by all the YouTube videos I watched about the mock lessons.

    • Catie

They want you to be engaging with the kids and have high energy. They really encourage the use of props. I’m not typically OVER animated, but I do try to be engaging with the kids.

    • Alyssa

Being animated definitely helps, but I don’t think you don’t have to be as over the top as some of the YouTube videos! The students are young: 5-12 years old and think it’s so funny/fun when I wear silly hats or a red nose. You may feel silly, but the kids love it! I can send you my intro video if you want!

      • Vivian D Harris

Can you send more your intro video as well? How are you paid? I’m a retired teacher.

    • Stephanie

Andrea, I agree with you. I thought about it for some time and then applied. Now that it’s time for the interview and mock stuff, after seeing videos, I just don’t know that I can be that animated! Thanks for the advice from the others. That makes me feel not so nervous.

  13. Alyssa

VIPKID has been such a blessing for my family! I work in the morning before they are awake! I work full time in a school and use this to supplement my income. I am seriously considering quitting my full time job and doing this solely! There are no tests to grade or lesson plans to make! The kids are all so sweet and WANT to learn! It’s so easy and I look forward to seeing my kiddos every morning! Below is my referral link: I’d love to walk anyone through the process or answer questions! https://t.vipkid.com.cn?partnerId=3724772&refereeId=8344127

    • Jill

I think you all have convinced me! I have a year and 1/2 experience teaching ESL to adults and 2 years experience assisting in elementery school with a focus on ESL! I am also a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom of two. I would LOVE to make some extra FUN money!

  14. Jessica

I applied after seeing this on Hip2save a few times. At first I thought nothing of it but the more I saw it the more I thought it would be a good choice for me. I did apply and was hired. I teach early morning and late evenings. It is helping me achieve the dream of becoming location independent for our family. We want to travel the US. I feel like it is making our dreams come true. Which sounds a bit dramatic! But for a homeschooling mom of three still being able to work from anywhere for a very good wage it is a dream come true. Just like all the other hip2savers above if you want to talk about the experience you can email me (jmccabe29@gmail.com) and use my referral link. https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=8343944&refersourceid=a01

  15. Stephanie

Just wondering from those of you who have already signed up, I seen you set the hours you are available and then the families sign up for time slots. Did it take some time to start getting sign ups? Do your time slots tend to fell up? Thanks for your help! Still working up the nerve for the interview 😉

    • Stephanie

      Fill up! come on, Autocorrect!

    • Laura

It does take a little bit to start getting students to sign up, but they have “Peak peak times” which are times which you are more likely to get a student to sign up. The first month it’ll be definitely more scattered in sparse, but after a few months you should have more regular bookings.

  16. Aally

Sadly i applied a few month ago and was denied 🙁 I have the experience and and B.A in English. Would anyone know if they allow you apply again after sometime as past?

    • Laura

Yes. Just use a different email address.

  17. Cassandra

How are they with hiring people of color?

    • Laura

      Yes!

  18. LibraryLady

I was hired last month and have already taught 100 classes! I made about $1,000 for my first paycheck. If you’re interested, I’m here to help! Just click this link to get started and apply: https://m.vipkidteachers.com/?refereeId=8320748

    • Jill

I haven’t read the fine print, but everyone here has been so helpful with information, that I just thought I’d comment here before delving into the details. You say that you’ve taught 100 hours and recieved around $1k? That’s only $10/hr. Is that a typical starting wage and then it incrementally goes up or goes up depending on how many students you have per class? Thanks! This is very i teresting to me!

      • Jill

Oh! I think I just found my answer! 25 min. classes! Wow! This does sound fun 😄

        • LibraryLady

Yes, the classes are only 25 minutes so I make at least $10 a class, but there are extra incentives for completing 45 classes or more a month. You can also make $2 extra per class that is booked short notice. You get extra for a trial student who signs up after taking your class. It has been such a blessing to work for VIPKID!

          • Vivian D Harris

Is it tax deductible? Do they with hold taxes?

  19. Cassandra

Does anyone know if this company hires People of Color?

    • Rose

      They do!

  20. Rn3002344555

I want to apply! Is there any special equipment needed or do they give it to you and how often are you paid! Monthly, bi weekly and I’m assuming it’s direct deposit

    • Laura

Webcam, high speed internet, headset (makes it easier to hear and be heard)

    • Rose

You just need a computer with a webcam, a microphone headset, and a strong desire to work with sweet children! You get paid once a month! Feel free to email me if you have any questions! rosiesolomon@outlook.com

  21. Animity

How long is each teaching session?

    • Laura

      25 minutes!

  22. AOhio

Sounds like a great opportunity to earn some extra money and work to help students

  23. Bobby

    I am not a native speaker..Can i still apply?

    • Laura

Can you speak English fluently? Do you have an accent? I’m not sure if parents would have an issue booking someone who didn’t “sound” native.

  24. MP

What’s all taken out of pay checks? How many percent are taxes and other deductions they may have? I’m just wondering if it’s worth it.

    • Laura

You are consider an independent contractor. No taxes are taken out of your check, but when tax time comes you’ll have to file.

    • Emma

You also are required to pay your own Social Security on the income… My taxes and SS are somewhere between 35-40% wich makes it a little hard to wake up so flipping early! But I must admit the students are so sweet and fun.

  25. Rosie Wade

Would it be reasonable to be able to make $2500 a month with vipkid?

    • Laura

You could. You would have to figure out how much they pay you and sign up for that amount of shifts . It does take some time to get fully booked . But you also create your own schedule so you can open as many times slots as you’d like. 😊

    • Angela

I like what you said Daniela – I don’t have high speed internet, not sure about web cam etc = But, the “sign up and don’t look back!” says a lot 🙂 That’s great encouragement.

  26. Brit

how does this work when u have to file taxes?

    • Leslie

I work for H&R Block. So I can answer this question. Someone above said that you are an independent contractor with this country. So that means if you earn 8 dollars for a 25 minute class, they will hand over the full 8 dollars and not take out any taxes. But at the end of the year, they will issue a 1099Misc that tells the IRS how much money they paid you. You will then be required to fill out a schedule C on your tax return. Which is not really hard to do. Turbo tax could walk you through that. The hard part is the way your refund would change. Because you still need to pay tax on the money. 15% for social security and medicare. Plus your tax rate for federal taxes. (most people are in the 15 and 25% brackets). Plus your state taxes. This tax money will be “taken out” of your other witholdings from other jobs or yous spouse’s job even. If you end up making much money, you can start sending in quarterly payments on this class money. 1040 ES is the form number. It just depends on how much you earn and how high your refund is now. And how much you can tolerate it going down. I hope this helps. Probably more than anyone wanted to know.

      • Angela

Leslie is there a certain money amount you have to make in order for them to issue the 1099Misc (or if you are under the amount, do they just not send that–so there is no need to file)?

  27. Sharol

Is the interview process by phone, email or webcam??? How exciting! It sounds like something I could do…!!! TIA!!!

  28. Sue

Can I apply for this job too? I would love to do it but I lived in Thailand.

  29. *Angela-Miles*

I applied a couple months ago and got accepted but never did the interview. My anxiety was kicking in. Guess im going to practice this week and maybe give it a shot in a few days.

  30. acgold

Any recommendations on good, reliable, inexpensive headset?

  31. Jennifer Vee

This is the first time I’ve heard about VIPKID & I’ll definitely be looking into it. The posting says you can earn $14-$22/hr, I’m curious to know, if anyone here started at $22/hr or do you start at $14 & gradually move up? Anyone know how the pay is determined when you first sign up? 🙂

    • Mel c

Most people start at $8/ 25 minutes class=$16 an hour. If you start and finish classes on time, you get an extra $1 per class=$18/hour. If you teach over 45 classes a month you get an extra $1 per class which equals $20. Some make a little more or less depending on experience

Here my email if you have any questions about the interview process and link below to apply

Thanks for the info. Mel C. 🙂

  32. Anna

Do you sign a contract? What is the length of the contract?

    • Erin Lisonbee

Anna, you sign a 6 month contract at a time. That being said, there are no minimum hours you have to teach. So potentially could sign a 6 month contract and just work 1 hour every Saturday for 6 months. Or could work 18 hours a week like I do. Some people even work 40 hours a week. In my experience it is very easy to get your contract renewed so you don’t have to worry about that. I think they only deny people a contract if they have many cases of not showing up to class or really horrible parent reviews. There are opportunities to get a raise every 3 contracts. Feel free to contact me with more questions! My email is emclark72@gmail.com and this is my link to apply https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=3426842&refersourceid=a01
      or use this code: 021G62.

    • anne

You sign a 6 month contract.

  33. Jenny

Very interesting reading all the comments. Something to keep in mind.

  34. Erin

THIS IS A DREAM JOB 😍 No commute time, I teach in my pajamas, and the Chinese kids are super cute. I always start my morning laughing 😅it’s perfect for moms who want to stay home with their kids but still want the fulfillment of having a job and earning extra money each month. You make your own schedule so you can work as little or as much as you want each week. There is no limit to the amount of days you can take off 👍 If you want to use my link they give those who are referred by someone extra consideration 👏You can either apply through this link https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=3426842&refersourceid=a01
or use this code: 021G62. Please also feel free to PM me with questions!

  35. Anne

I’ve been working with VIPKID for a couple months now. I started in September. Due to my schedule, I don’t have a huge amount of time slots that I can open, and the ones I have opened are a bit slow going, but I’m getting there. For me, any extra income is a bonus so I’m not too worried about the light schedule I have now. Classes are 25 minutes and the curriculum is fully prepared for you. I am not an over the top excited teacher and that’s okay. There will always be kids who mesh better with a calmer teacher and those who mesh better with a more “excited” teacher.

Feel free to use my referral link if you’re interested in applying! https://t.vipkid.com.cn/?refereeId=7193817&refersourceid=a01

  36. Alicia

For those of you that are current teachers with the company do you need to have some knowledge of Chinese in order to communicate with the children? I have experience teaching but not in a setting like this especially with students in another country! Thanks for any input 🙂

  37. Erik

I am a SAHD. I currently have a bachelors degree and working on my masters. I have spent 3 years working in my daughters’ elementary school and one of those years I volunteered several times a week to do what we call ‘center’ with Kinder and 1st graders. I am really only seeing women in the comments here; does anyone know any Dads or males that do this tutoring?

    • Jessica

YES! There are men that do this. You can check out youtube for some examples. Search for -vipkid guys. You will come up with some ideas of what it is like for them. The time you spend at your daughters school does count as experience. I think there are many more women than men, but men still do it and are very successful.

I am on my second contract with VIPKID, almost a year! It has been a blessing to our family and has helped us to pay off debt and do extra fun things we may not be able to do otherwise (Paid cash for Disney trip).
I work when my kids are asleep and I love that all of the PowerPoints and teaching materials are ready for me. The kids are fun to teach and I can teach from anywhere and the hours are flexible and I work as much or as little as I want. IT is fun! It also helps me to teach my own children how to deal correctly!

If you have any questions or need help with the application process or interview please let me know! Kalissacotten@gmail.com

How high a speed on the internet is required? We live in a rural area and only get about 3 mbps (terrible, I know!)

  40. Kristy

I’m really frustrated! Went through to the second mock class and was not accepted. What is frustrating is that the feedback was exactly opposite of what the interviewer said. It’s like she put the information in backwards. There is apparently no way to refute it sadly.

    • Ann

Kristy! Try again 🙂 I have heard many people being frustrated with mock 2 as well, they re-applied with a different email and tried again with better success! If you are up to it, you can try again, ( you already have everything mostly reviewed and prepared so a reapply would be quick) just apply everything you’ve learned and give it another go. Sorry that happened to you thats very frustrating! https://www.vipkidteachers.com/?refereeId=3210615&refersourceid=a01
