My son wants to do a project comparing different ways to filter water. Does anyone know if this could be used to measure which filter worked best?

If he’s doing a school project and just wants to take some dirty water and make it look clean – then yes, this would probably help with that and make his experiment look more scientific 🙂
I wouldn’t say this would measure whether the water was safe to drink.
There’s another test we get done at work that measure TSS – total suspended solids. I’m not sure if that test would be better for a filter experiment or not – just another term you can Google.

Am I missing something or does this not say what it tests for?

    • Lolita

I read a little more. It measure TDS, but from what I am reading TDS isn’t what makes water “drinkable” or not.

Wow! just wow! This is the scammy-iest piece of carp I have ever seen listed on Hip2save. I work with municipal water and this does absolutely nothing but test the temperature of the water (if even that). You are not going to get any useful information from this hunk of plastic in order to tell you if you need to change a filter or if your water is “safe to drink.” This should be illegal and probably is somewhere.

Wow, I agree too. This just sounds too wonky. I can smell a lawsuit if someone were to get sick off the results of this little gadget.

What! Hip2Save is now selling carp! I love seafood. From now on, I’m buying all my “carp” from them. ❤️

TDS METER measures total dissolved solids in the water. It does not measure water quality.

I was wondering if it tests pH, but you’re right Debora and Babs. There is just nothing there!

I’m not sure why they’re recommending this for aquariums. For just a minute I was excited, thinking this would measure pH, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels…. but it doesn’t.
I’m not a water expert by any stretch – just someone with a small aquarium who also has to occasionally run groundwater samples to the lab and use a pH meter – but I’m not sure what good it does to know the amount of dissolved solids if you don’t know WHAT kind they are. Plus bacteria levels wouldn’t get picked up by this, would they?
