On Amazon, in small print for the Dot, there is a special holiday offer when you buy the Dot for $29.99, you can get the TP-Link HS100 smart plug for only $5.00. The plug, is $22.99, on sale, so this seems like a good deal. The discount will show up in your cart when you add both.

I tried to do this deal on Saturday with the TP-Link Smart Plug and it was not working properly. If you do it make sure that you watch your final total. Amazon Customer Service indicated that they were having a technical issue with the savings and provided me with a $25 credit. (On Saturday, the plug was priced $29.99)

    • Megan Baisden

Was coming to say the same! I ordered this deal last night for a dirty santa gift.

      • Kristen

Thanks for the idea of buying on for a dirty Santa exchange. I was having trouble deciding what to buy!

Its a main deal at the top of the Amazon page with them bundled together. It wouldn’t let me add multiple to my cart last night so I got four in separate transactions. With prime part of my order is already here. Go through top cash back and get 8% back.

    • Allisha

Top cash back…. never heard of it… is that like ebates?

      • Jessica

I have been using top cash back for years never had a problem. Great customer service response thru email. The account is attached to my paypal account so when the transactions are comfirmed i get my money. Here is my link if you want to check it out!😁https://www.topcashback.com/ref/pinkplayboy84

    • Shelby

I had the same problem so I ordered one black, one white since I only wanted two and it let me do them both on one order.

    dot or google home mini?

    • Marshall

Google mini has much better audio. Podcasts and news are grat, and even background music is passable. Alexa has more broad functionality, but google does some things better (“goodmorning” calendar and cast support). There’s a lot of small distinctions, but as someone who owns 5 of each, I like/use my minis much more.

  8. has anyone used this? if so what are your thoughts?

    What exactly is thisl

    • krystal

So this is a voice controlled device. It has a few functions, more if you are an Amazon Prime member. I am a mom of 3 little kids I use mine 90% to play music, ask the time/date/forecast, set timers and create and add items to my shopping list, which I cam later access from my phone. I will say:
      1. It doesn’t do as much as I thought it would
      2. A year ago when we got it prime music (free with prime) was way better, now we pay for their prime unlimited because we use it a lot on all devices and the included prime music is very limited and repetitive if you listen often.
      3. Our dot works ok for basic things I just connected ours to a Bluetooth speaker for better music listening which works really well since we have a few speakers just laying around.
      On the plus side
IMO this is totally worth $30! The ability to stick things in the oven and say “Alexa start a timer for 20 minutes” is amazing
The dot is full capacity of everything the full size (no screen) does but with smaller speaker. We have one great room I have my dot in the living room the speaker across in the kitchen and it works fine
This thing hears me talking to it over tv, kids talking and water running and can understand me! I’ve added weird stuff to my grocery list and it gets it!
Plus my kids ask her for jokes or stories or the weather and they use it a lot. I made me daughter ask the weather to find out what to wear (she’s 7) and we really like it!
We got ours last year as a gift but if I needed another one I’d buy it for $30 in a heartbeat

      • Ger

I agree! I have 9 & 6 year olds! They LOVE asking Alexa what the weather will be-so they can dress appropriately. My 9 year old started baking cookies on her own & tells Alexa to set the timer for the oven. They ask her to tell them jokes, bedtime stories, & even tell her to play bedtime music! Lol:) We have big living rooms & I think it works fine. You can also connect it o Bluetooth or to an amplifier if you have surround sound hooked & just connect with a jack or Bluetooth. This is a great deal for $30!

      • Nikki

Thanks for the helpful review! I placed an order. 🙂

  9. Carol

I saw Ebates had 5% cash back with Echo devices.

  10. CoffeeB

I bought one for a Christmas gift. Do I need to buy anything else to make it functional? I see something about a plug? And…speakers? I”m completely illiterate when it comes to these…so any advice will help. Thank you!

    • Beverly

No, you don’t need anything else with it. You do need a smartphone or tablet where you can install the Alexa app in order to use it.

      • 💚 Fridays

Yes and after you install the app you can enable about 15-20,000 additional skills from the basic out of box functions. You can sort through the skills pretty quick on the app. The dots were much better than I thought it would be. Great if you have multiple story home. You can use these as intercoms as well so no more shouting upstairs. Haha

      • Wendy

It mentions a plug for $5. We don’t need that?

        • Swirlypop

No, you do not need plug for Dot to work. It’s fun & convenient to use the plugs and have Alexa turn things on & off but not a necessity.

    • CoffeeB

Great!!! Thank you for all the help.

  11. Stephmom24

    • pokz

      Apples and oranges…if u know what i mwan…

    • pokz

This will answer questions u ask…but if u want it to do tasks..like turn lights on u need to buy a plug… u pkug that to the wall then u plug ur lamp to it…the u configure it so alexa can control it on/off via voice command.

      • Ellen

Thank you for your response. I would just want it play music, jokes. No turning on any lights.

        • pokz

Thats all u need then…if u have an android phone.. it already has google in it… just say hey google …. whats the weather today?

How does this Echo and similar devices work ? Do I have to have a cable account, ? a Smart phone ?/ Do you just plug it in and it works ? Do you have to pay a monthly fee ??? I tried looking on the internet, but after an hour of search I am no more educated than when I began… Can someone please explain this to me ?? Thanks bunches <3

Could we buy this and some tiny filler top get the total over $30 from BB&B then use the $10 off $30 coupon they mail out?

  20. Kristen

Hi – I dont know much about these but if I want it to play music and set a timer, I dont need a plug correct?
If I want to put one in each of my girls rooms, can it be used as an intercom without a plug?
Can the girls and I each request our own songs in different rooms to different dots or will it change to whoever just made the latest song request? Thank you in advance!!

    • pokz

      Depends on ur configuration

  21. Robin

Can the Dot link to the Echo (79.99)??
