Note from Collin:

Do you have a product you love? We definitely have many favorite products and thought it would be FUN to share some of them with you! I personally love product recommendations and I’ve also had a few requests from readers, so I have asked each member of the team to think of products they love (cosmetics, kitchen gadgets etc.) and to write up a post that will be shared here every Tuesday.

Hi all! It’s Michelle here, one of Collin’s sidekicks!

I have been following a Ketogenic diet for the past year, and am loving how I feel eating this way. I know it’s not for everyone, but for me it has been life-changing.

The only thing that I couldn’t get used to was the aftertaste of so many sugar replacements like Splenda and Swerve.  I thought I had tried them all until about a month ago when I discovered the plant sourced sweetener Xylitol (Xylo Sweet).  I made some ice cream with my Whynter ice cream maker (this was featured in one of our gift guides this year and was a gift to myself when I lost my first 50 lbs.) and really wanted to find a sugar substitute that I enjoyed.  I will NEVER use anything else. THIS IS LIFE CHANGING!

WARNING: Xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. I would keep it away from all pets to be safe.

A few things I love about Xylitol is the texture feels like real sugar and has little crystal-like granules, it’s not a powder like other sugar replacements.  I also love that there is no aftertaste and that it can be used in most recipes that call for sugar in equal portions. I have found that I use a little less Xylitol than the amount of sugar it calls for because I feel like it’s a little sweeter than regular sugar.

One thing to note is that I have heard some people say they get an upset stomach when they use Xylitol, however I have never experienced this, but I also don’t consume very much of it on a daily basis.

For those of you who are not familiar with this way of eating, a ketogenic diet is a low-carb way of eating that focuses on high-fat and moderate amounts of protein.  A few books that helped me on my journey are Keto Clarity and The Obesity Code.  Do what works for YOU! ❤️

Down 58 lbs and about 50 more to go!  I got this! 👊

Congratulations on the amazing transformation! We’re all so blessed to have such resources available to us. I can’t wait to try out this alternative sweetener.

    • Maria

I agree–I’m sure you can’t find this in all the different countries–especially not just shipped to us so easily! We are blessed indeed!

    • Gina

Don’t “stoned” me by asking: but what in the world if its deadly for pets that human can take in???

      • Brandon

Well… Chocolate is toxic to dogs and I am sure you have eaten chocolate, right? Garlic is toxic to cats. You have had garlic haven’t you? Oh, and good thing they did not use a guinea pig as a “guinea pig” for penicillin because, yep, it is toxic to them. So many things you eat are toxic to other species…

And now you know… And knowing is 1/2 the battle!!

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thank you! 😘

I work in veterinary medicine. Please take note that xylitol is toxic to dogs and we have seen an increase in this problem over the last 5 years or so.

    • Adam

Might have to do with the fact it is showing up in more human products, as it is really good for your teeth. It has the potential to rebuild enamel. It is in most all Trident gums, which is all I will get now. I also get a dose in my Spry toothpaste & mouthwash.

    • Jeanette

It’s just dogs, it can be fatal to cats, and other animals as well. So please be sure to keep it away from all animals, both the raw xylitol and anything you bake using it.

But on a positive note, I’m this is working for you, the progress you’ve made looks good on you! Congratulations Michelle πŸ™‚

      • Jeanette

        I’m glad**

  12. Jen Law

Congrats on the weightloss! That’s amazing! Like someone else said, it is very toxic to pets, so please watch where you have it. Also, it can cause stomach issues with some. I would try to find some samples to see how it affects you first.

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks Jen and thanks for the reminders.

  13. HeidiHoNayber

AMAZING! This is so inspiring! I’m so happy for you! I just started my Keto journey one week ago today. I’m 10 lbs down (water weight, for sure) and I am looking forward to feeling the life changing effects! I ordered the xylitol (posted on H2S) that was on sale on Amazon the other day!

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Great job Heidi! Hey water weight or whatever, nice to be lighter and get healthy! YOU GO GIRL!

  14. Melissa

Collin, could you consider adding to your post that xylitol can be extremely toxic to pets? I wouldn’t want any of your keto readers to feed their pet table scraps not knowing this and result in a pet death! Even very small amounts can be potentially fatal to pets. Congrats on your success with your keto diet!

    • Amy

Did you read the post? There is warning about pets already πŸ™„

  15. Laurie

    Congratulations!!!! You look fantastic:)

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thank you Laurie! A work in progress! 😘

  16. Jan

Way to go Michelle! What a huge accomplishment!!!

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thank you Jan! ❀️

  17. Barbara Brown

Why is it harmful to pets but not humans?

    • C.D.

I was wondering the same thing……….

    • Michelle Stadel

Dogs are not similar to humans, chocolate, garlic, onions, macadamia nuts, etc. are harmful to dogs, too.

  18. Abbie

I feel like they reformulated Swerve not too long ago. It definitely does not have the same after-taste that it once did (for me at least.) Anyone else notice this? I think it must have been around the same time they downsized bags from 16oz. to 12 oz.

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh thanks for the tip Abbie! Maybe I need to give it another shot!

  19. JEB

What a transformation! You look great!

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thank you Jeb!

Is anyone will explain concepts of Keto Diet? Thanks

      • Brandon Gray

Ultra low carb, moderate protein, and high fat

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Great job Charity! The first few weeks are the toughest I think! Keep up the great work! πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

Do you have a facebook page or website by chance i am xull keto as well great job

I’ve been using Xylitol for years now as there is no after taste, and I like to keep my sugar intake to a minimum. It dissolves best with heat (just like sugar). I buy the individual packets to keep in my purse for when I get coffee, tea, oatmeal, etc. while I’m out and about. As far as upset stomach goes, it has to do with how much you use (large amounts can also cause diarrhea/loose stool). Just figure out what works for you and how much you can tolerate. In moderation, it is a great product, perfect for baking, and gives you the sweet without the negative effects sugar does.

  23. fitnessmom

I’ll have to check out this brand. I’ve been using xylitol in place of sugar for about a year & love it!

  24. babymair

    Congrats , you look gr8 … ..!!!! . Ur hard work paid off ..

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thank you!

  25. Margaret

Congratulations.. I’m new to Keto thanks for sharing.

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      You are welcome Margaret!

  26. Donna

i love it too! just please remember not to give anything with xylitol to your pets. it is toxic to them and can cause seizures and liver failure.

  27. Liz

Way to go! We are keto since Oct and my husband and I both list around 25lb eachπŸ˜€ eating yummy food too! Have you tried eurithitol? Right now I use that more than exylitol

    • Amy

Wow, that’s so great! Would you mind sharing some of your favorite meals/snacks?

      • Liz

I love the website Everyday I Dream of Food. She came out with a cookbook that has large pictures and nutrional info on every recipe. Search sausage hamburger broccoli alfredo on Pinterest, just made that this week & it’s super good!

    • Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Great job Liz!!

The glycemic index for xylitol (a measure of how quickly foods raise blood sugar) is 7, compared to erythritol, which has a glycemic index of 0. For Keto a GI of 0 is what you are looking for. You only have 20 net carbs and xylitol would some what count more like a net carb…

    • Brandon Gray

      Exact good advice!!!

The more you know…. (Queue theme music)

  29. Brandon Gray

Please note that xyolitol sill has an insulin reaction for most people. As such, increased insulin = decreased nutritional ketosis. You should use xyolitol and malitol in very limited use. (Hence why a lot of sugar-free candy is still an no-no in addition to tummy upset) Might try erithratol instead. Less insulin reaction and less tummy issues.

I’ve been Keto for going on 7 months & lost 70+ from my highest weight. Highly recommend The Keto Ice Cream cookbook by Carrie Brown from Ketovangolist Kitchen. It is magical!! Available on Amazon. I have made rocky road, butter pecan, vanilla & root beer float so far..Ketoon sister!!

  31. Michelle (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Christina that’s great! It’s hard work for sure! Keep up the good work and I’ll check out that cookbook!

  32. Mandy

I am so happy for you!! I have been ketogenic for a year and a half and love it! Good for you for wanting better for yourself! ❀️❀️❀️😘😘😘

  33. Steph-B

You look amazing! You go girl! Keep up the great work !
I too have struggled with finding a sweetener without an aftertaste. I just stopped looking but I’ll have to give this one a try, thanks!

  34. Kristy A

The company that produces Xylosweet (Xclear) is located a few miles from where I live… I’ve been useing their products for quite some time.
You MUST try the gum and toothpaste. My dentist told me xyilitol is better for your teeth than fluoride.
My favorite thing to sweeten with Xylosweet is my oatmeal! I’ve used it to bake peanut butter brownies before too and they were pretty good!

  35. Deb R

You look wonderful and probably feel fantastic. I have tried keto. The first time, I quickly dropped 35lbs. Then I slipped up, regained all the weight plus some. Since then it has been harder for me to get back on track and can’t seem to lose any weight. I feel horrible, tired all the time with no ambition. What can i do to get the pounds rolling off again?

  36. Belinda

Congratulations! I just had a baby so was off keto for a bit, but plan to make this my first step to start back toward it.
I used to love xylitol when my store carried it. Going to get some again. Monk fruit is probably the only other that I could stand the taste. xylitol did somewhat give me a stomach issue, but in a good way. I always had some with my morning coffee to start my day and keep me regular.
